lovin' the sand
lovin’ the sand
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We love us our long weekends! On Monday, Tom did an 8-mile training run which ended at Harbor Beach where the kids and I and Heather’s family (mom, dad, bro, dad’s cousin, and Taliana) were hanging out for the morning-early afternoon.

Cameron was at first a little hesitant to really get into the sand, but after a while….

…she clearly acclimated!

As I’ve probably mentioned before, Cameron is getting pretty vocal when something is taken away from her. At the beach, she took her protests up another notch! Poor girl decided to flee across the sand as fast as her little hands and knees could carry her after Dylan had pried a sand toy out of her hot little hands!

She finally decided to crawl on back to us after we pleaded with her to return!

Aside from a few “incidents” like that, the kids mostly enjoyed playing together!

Of course, Dylan had the most fun playing with Taliana, Auntie Heather, and Uncle David. They built lava-spewing volcanoes and hobbits and goblins and train tracks!

The entire weekend was so much fun, it was tough getting back to the regular work-week routine on Tuesday (yes, we were all late getting up and getting to school/work! And, as per usual at week’s start, I had a tough time saying bye to the kids when we dropped them off at daycare)!

It was beautiful outside, so we decided to head to the beach. Ukeleles, sunshine, vegan donuts, drinks…life is good!

We stayed until about noon–when the Ukelele band started closing up shop–then we got lunch at Taqueria Vallarta. We spent the next several hours out in the backyard–toys got cleaned, Dylan had fun, Cameron finally got tuckered out enough to nap!

strollin' to the beach. cameron's second time in the double stroller
strollin’ to the beach
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

In between rain and sickness, we had another opportunity to hit the beach in the morning. Here’s Cameron happily riding in the double-stroller. Dylan and Cameron sit back to back, but she can hear him talking and often tries to twist around to see him. He chats away in her direction. Once we’re at the beach, though, he usually abandons her for his snack (we get a little something from the cafĂ© there) and people-watching. He notes everything from the volleyball players to the dog-walkers and the folks on the sailboats…! Cameron’s big ol’ eyes just try to track every bird that comes near that is hoping to get a crumb from our snacks. We usually stay for about an hour and it usually feels like too short a time (and that probably means we’ve stayed just the right amount of time).

It was such a beautiful day, I spontaneously decided to take the kids to the beach. I figured we had to seize the day since it won’t be long before I’m back to full-time and I will no longer be able to spend mornings with the kids.

Cameron loved being outside and watching the dirty birds tweet and fly around. It was also the first time I put her in the stroller for a ride instead of just carrying her in the Ergo! She seemed to enjoy the ride there, but once the stroller stopped, she wanted o-u-t! And, pronto!

We happened to see some mommies we met long, long ago when Dylan was just months old! Dylan loved playing with Emily and Jonah who both just celebrated their 4th birthdays this past weekend. He didn’t want to leave, but being the nice fella he is, he didn’t give me hard time about it!

As always, more pictures can be seen on flickr.

weight gain and another beach day

another beach day – 08 /28/2009

We accidentally missed Cameron’s weight check appointment on Thursday, so we had to reschedule for Friday morning. This meant that I had to take both kids with me. I’m still somewhat intimidated by the prospect of hauling two kids around with me, but everything went smoothly despite the fact that it took nearly an hour to get everyone ready to get out the door!

I’d been waking Cameron up to nurse approximately every 3 hours if she didn’t wake up herself. I would say that maybe 5 or 6 times out of 10, I’d need to wake her up — we had no idea how much weight she was putting on and having a baby who easily sleeps 3 hours at a stretch is pretty new to us! But, as it turns out, Cameron gained a whopping 12 ounces in 9 days! The doctors hope to see about a half ounce gain for every day and baby to return to birth weight by their second week. Cameron surpassed expectations. As of Friday, she was at 8 pounds 3 ozs.! She is still a wee bit yellow from jaundice and her eye is still a little goopy from the clogged tear duct, but she is otherwise doing very well.

After her appointment, we stopped back at the house to pack some snacks and then met Heather, Taliana, P., and Heather’s parents and their dog over at Harbor Beach. It was an incredibly hot day (nearly 100F!), but we wanted to get in some beach time while the weather was still good! Dylan has been lovin’ it. He and Taliana and P. ran races on the beach, enjoyed Italian sodas and all sorts of healthy snacks (dried mango, fresh strawberries, apple slices, sunflower seeds, etc.). Cameron took a nice nap in the car seat before I had to take her out. After I nursed her, though, she fell asleep in my arms and we hung out in the shade watching the bigger kids play….

Hey! That’s not Dylan! That’s Justin! He’s 3 days older than Dylan and he just celebrated his birthday this past weekend!

Many guests commented on how similar Dylan and Justin are, both in terms of looks and (seeming) disposition (I have a hunch Dylan is probably a little fussier than Justin, though!).

Dylan had a great time playing with Justin’s trains and playing at the water table! He had a nice nap once we left the party!

After he woke up, we headed to New Brighton Beach, where Auntie Christina and Dre were hanging out. They apparently had a very active day (riding bikes, jogging along the beach, tossing the football back and forth, etc.)! But, luckily, they were still camped out by the time Dylan and I got there!

About 30 minutes later, we turned around to see Heather, Taliana, and Assaf! We hadn’t seen them all week due to Dylan’s cold, so it was a nice coincidence to see them there!

Day 79: at River Arts Festival watching ducks, listening to taiko
Day 79: at River Arts Festival
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

On Sunday, we had brunch and then spontaneously decided to check out the River Arts Festival at the nearby park.

Dylan wasn’t all that keen on going until he heard the words “see ducks”, then he wanted to hustle on over there as fast as his chubby little legs would carry him!

Anyway, he’s grown a lot…Today at gymnastics was actually the first time he was able to swing on the rope swing all by himself (he actually held on where before he’d just fall right off) and he expressed a lot of interest in going over the bars. He’s still talkin’ up a storm; in fact, he’s very, very opinionated and quite vocal about his preferences (for food, clothing, where I should sit, where he should sit, where Tom should sit, which color spoon, plate, bowl, cup he needs, etc. Despite this, I guess we’re glad he talks.). He is very solid on his colors — red, blue, green, purple, orange, yellow, white, black, and pink (pink for drawing and blue for clothes are current favorites) — and shapes — triangle, square, and circle — now.

He’s also quite empathetic. Lately, he’s been going around with both hands behind his hips saying his “back hurts” (Tom hurt his back!)

He is so much fun (and quite a handful!), it’s amazing to think he’ll be 2 tomorrow!!!

These kids are royalty, for sure. Music Together class was canceled today due to Veteran’s Day, but Dylan and I still got together with Heather and Taliana for a little Monday, pre-work fun! It was such a beautiful day!! Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay at Natural Bridges for too long since we were off to a late-ish start (10:30am) and I still had to go into work.

More pictures of these cuties are here.

It was another opportunity for Dylan to wear that cute little sun romper of his!

As always, much fun was had by all.

Today was another full Dylan day. We started out with a pancake brekky (thanks dad!) then headed to HAT’s for a collective trip to the Farmer’s market where we sampled (and got) some delicious Rainier cherries, some broccoli and some roasted corn. Afterwards, Cindy brought all of the boys to Santa Cruz for a visit, so we ate lunch at the Corner Cafe while Tom had another follow-up appointment for his eye. We then headed to Seabright Beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun.

After getting all tuckered out, we headed home for some Thai food and more hanging out time.

Dylan loved visiting with everyone (as usual) and stayed chipper until his postponed bedtime (9:45pm) at which time he promptly fell asleep! Hopefully, he’ll be good to go for tomorrow’s brunch with Uncle David and Taliana (hopefully, Tom and I will be, too!)….

Cindy, Jason and Tyler headed down to Santa Cruz because it was such a gorgeous day and Dylan was finally well enough to hang out with folks.

It was a great opportunity for Dylan to wear his little sun romper! Sure, he looked like he came straight out of a spaceship, but hey, he was protected with SPF 50+!

He was so tuckered out already — he’s still recuperating from croup and some pretty tough, restless nights — but he had so much fun playing with his cousins, he was cheery up until bed time!
