Reunited with Lola and Grandpa Mike

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Lola and Grandpa Mike went to the big, big city (NYC!) so they weren’t around to watch Cameron last Thursday or last Monday. They were eager to see her again today!

Lola bought her yet another cute dress and pair of flip flops (she likes gnawing on her flip flops…and on her toes, for that matter!), and they all came to my side of town to have lunch with me during the work day. We all had Thai food — I shared my rice, tofu and broccoli with her! And, towards the end of the meal, all the little girl wanted to do was cruise around the restaurant! We are in for trouble when she’s independently mobile!! She definitely likes to explore!

Lola took 45 pictures (whew!). When I get a few free moments, I’ll try to post some!

Overall, Dylan is a fantastic big brother. I mean, he does have his grabby moments where he snatches things away from Cameron. And, he has his spazzy moments where his sheer exuberance is a threat to Cameron’s safety! But, overall, he’s very loving and very sweet. I love that this picture captures that.

A year ago today, Cameron was about 24-weeks in-utero and was up and at ‘em, tumbling and kicking away in the wee hours of the morning (5am-ish!). Dylan was super-enthused about the prospect of having a little sister, and we hoped his enthusiasm wouldn’t wane. As it turns out, we got lucky! These kids adore each other.

Tonight, on our way upstairs, Cameron attempted climbing (the step is still a little too high for her to get her knee up) and Dylan sat next to her and declared, “I’m giving her all my love” and leaned in to give her kisses. Quite by coincidence, Cameron was up at 5:30 this morning, and her first inclination was to start patting Dylan’s head and yammering away in his direction. She still is often beside herself with joy when she sees him — her legs kick like crazy and she starts squealing like mad. How long is this unbridled enthusiasm for each other gonna last??

When Tom dresses Cameron, the results are always so sweet. On this particular day, he opted to put a little headband (from Auntie Christina or Auntie Cindy) in her hair. This was the day we went to Children’s Discovery Museum and she really started crawling…! Our baby girl is now 8-months old.

Cameron is on the move

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Just a few days ago, Cameron was doing a one-two, drop-drag and repeat to her target destination. On Friday (the first Music Together class of this session), she was still reluctant to travel any distance. Then, suddenly, on Saturday at the museum, she found all sorts of motivation to get her going. I took her into the infant and crawlers room to hang out (we never did get a chance to take advantage of this while Dylan was a crawler) and this display of ocean critters inside of it totally compelled her to crawl on over…!

Then, when we got home from the musuem, she was so enthused about being able to motor around, she was everywhere…and grinning ear to ear! Not content with just being able to get to appealing objects on the floor, she also started attempting to pull herself up. Now she can bring herself from a crawling position to a sitting position and start trying to pull up to stand…!

The most amazing this about all of this, of course, is just how quickly it happens!!

By the way, that thing around her neck is actually a headband…!

time is not crawling, but Cameron almost is

All of a sudden, Cameron started going up on her toes and lifting her entire body up off the ground–it was like she just instantly decided to do it the other day. She’s been able to get up on her knees and has been scooting backwards for a little while now, but this “downward facing dog” business is new!

Clearly, it’s hard work. I am truly inspired by the exercise regimen this little gal has fashioned for herself. It seems she gets tired and discouraged, too (poor little gal looks spent in this picture!), but her recovery time is remarkable–after just a few short minutes, she’s back to practicing and telling us all about it!

This was taken on St. Patrick’s Day, by the way. We have no strong affinity for the day (do we even think missionary work is a good thing? Um, no…or, I should say, “generally not,” but especially not in the way-back-when days.), but we all wore green (except for Dylan, who totally refused) and Tom made a vegan corned unbeef dish for dinner. During the day, we went to story time and, because we couldn’t stay for the whole session, we brought back shamrocks and green paper for after-school craft time….

bath night
bath night

Though it’s been harder to just whip out the camera (and carry it along, for that matter), the camera still lives! Dylan loved sharing a bath with Cameron the other day. Cameron was fine, but seemed a bit more concerned about the space that suddenly wasn’t just all her’s! She really loves the bath!

In other news, she finally started opening her mouth to solids (about a couple of days ago). We believe avocado was the “breakthrough” food. But, today, after seeing the pediatrician, we’re pausing new foods (on Day 4 of avocado) and have had her vaccines delayed because of some hives that just manifest yesterday. The doctor believes it’s viral (oh, lordy, when will we finally be done with these viruses??) and will clear in a couple of days, but she didn’t want to confuse the cause with vaccinations.

At this point, Cameron is in the 70-something percentile for weight and still at the 95th for height and looking good otherwise. We’ll take her back for vaccinations in about two weeks…!

I can’t believe she’s already 7 months old. I know I repeat myself when I say this, but time really is flying….

Dylan thought it would be pretty funny to put a take-out container on Cameron’s head. She humored him…!

Here’s Cameron, “tethered” to her mat by a long, long string of drool (click on the picture to see a larger picture)! She’s gotten so good at pushing her entire body up off the ground. She’s also added scooting backwards as a strategy for getting at whatever it is she wants! We’re in no hurry to have her crawl, for certain; we are just impressed by her brute strength!

One of the sweetest things we see these days is the kids genuinely just loving playing with each other. Cameron is still so little, but she gets it. When we chase Dylan around the kitchen or vice-versa, she’s just laughing and squealing and kicking her little legs in utter excitement! When we pick him up from preschool, her face just lights up (and, again, she starts kicking excitedly) and she starts trying to talk. Dylan’s first instinct is to always touch her hand to greet her and, once in the car, he reaches out to hold her hand all of the time. She cranes her neck so she can see him and he yammers away and makes her laugh.

A lot of times when we’re at home, Dylan will also just get down on the ground–on his belly, too–and just hang out with her. He’ll try reading her stories and he’ll hand her toys. He even tells us, “I want to play with Cameron.”

As far as we’re concerned, she’s growing way too quickly, but at the same time, we’re eager for them to be able to really play together. We can tell they’ll be good buddies.
