Day 31: wearing his monkey muffin shirt while he still fits in it (sort of)!

I always think of something to write about while I’m away from the computer, but of course, by the time 2am rolls around, those thoughts are all jumbled and gone!

I just wanted to post a more recent picture of Dylan since, even from our perspective, this little guy seems to be growing like crazy. Sure, he’s still smaller (at about 32″ tall and 28 pounds, he’s leaner and a little shorter) than most of his peers, but, taken on his own, he’s just getting bigger and bigger….As evidence, his monkey muffin shirt is already beginning to ride up on his belly…and I only bought this last year!

We’ve actually been doing a lot lately. Last weekend, we went to the beach with Hailey (and Amy and baby Molly), had dinner at Cindy’s house, celebrated Hailey’s 3rd birthday, visited the Boardwalk with Taliana, AND went to a pre-college program event over at SJSU.

Dylan had a great time doing everything! We’re discovering that he’s remarkably gracious about sharing, etc., with kids he knows and likes and considers friends (like Hailey), and definitely less so with strangers. He also now refers to Taliana as his “best friend” and talks about seeing her and kissing her nearly every day!

Dylan also still digs the running–he’s super fast! At SJSU’s casino night, Dylan ran up and down and all over the building…at top speed! I definitely got my exercise in for the day!!!

You can now access these, and all the rest of our pictures, from the new Photos page!

Back Log: 2 years ago today, we noted Dylan started clapping his hands! Crazy….

By Sunday, Dylan’s fever had gone down sufficiently that we felt pretty comfortable with taking him to my run (the San Jose Rock ‘n’ Roll) and, of course, we weren’t going to miss Jason’s 7th bday party!

Dylan woke up at 5:45am and napped 30 minutes (Tom had a very challenging 2-3 hours with him while Christina and I were running! Incidentally, this was Christina’s first half-marathon!), but he perked up at Auntie Cindy’s house, our immediate post-race (and post-shower) destination.

This obviously isn’t Dylan, but I can’t resist sharing this picture of Jason practicing his chords for us on his new electric guitar (Jeff’s teaching him)!

Day 94: Dylan does the balance beam by himself...for a few steps!
Dylan balances for a few steps!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

After a what seems like a very long hiatus, Dylan finally is trying the potty again. The first time around, the novelty wore off, partly because there was no support for it at daycare (I asked them if they’d take him up to the potty and they said they didn’t start doing that until the kids were in the preschool and/or 2-years old), so the project just sort of languished. However, now that a batch of kidlets are graduating from the preschool, making room for the little ones in the toddler room (Dylan included) to move on in, they’re beginning to take some of the toddlers up to the potty.

Once we got wind of this, we started whipping out the potty at home, first thing in the morning, first thing after nap, and whenever else we could reasonably anticipate the need.

Dylan hasn’t been wholly enthusiastic. He often kinda complains and frowns a lot, but the reminder that he won’t need to be wiped with a cold wet wipe if he pees in the potty seems to be a pretty good motivator!

This past weekend, the poor fella had diarrhea, but he made a huge potty breakthrough — he went poops twice (with the runs even)!

I’m still a little worried that the daycare folks won’t be able to give him the patience and encouragement he needs, especially since we’re so much in the learning stage still. Right now, we definitely need to coax him to give it a try; sometimes he runs around without a diaper and he won’t sit down until he absolutely can’t hold his pee anymore! Sometimes, it still takes a little time — lots of books, songs, etc. — before we see some results (at least, these are the times when he’ll willingly and patiently sit!)!

Now that he’ll get some reinforcement at daycare, maybe this time using the potty will stick….

Ok. So that’s the potty report. In other news, we watched Jason and Tyler play soccer this past weekend (Dylan was a trooper, he smiled and made the best of it despite the diarrhea) and, during this week’s gymnastics, he took a few steps along the raised balance beam all by himself (a few weeks ago, he walked along a beam that was pretty much resting right on the floor).

These are the small things I know I’ll forget if I don’t write them down!

Dr. Dylan
Dr. Dylan
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Well, of course, Halloween was fun, but what was surprising was just how much fun Dylan had!

We started with trick-or-treating with Taliana the Big Bad Wolf and Heather Little Red Riding Hood (note that Heather made Taliana’s costume. She did an incredible job!!) and ended with trick-or-treating with Jason Woody and Tyler a vampire (make no mistake, this wasn’t Dracula. If you erred on this front, little vamp would set you straight!)

Oh, we also dressed up for library lap time where Dr. Dylan and the Big Bad Wolf were subjects of a librarian digital photo fest.

Anyway, I luckily got Dylan down for a nap right after lap time, so he was refreshed and ready for downtown trick-or-treating by 2pm. The downtown thing was really nice! We didn’t just pick up candy (we redistributed Dylan’s haul down at Cindy’s house), but he also got some stickers, crayons and some other little goodies.

Dylan had been practicing saying “tick teet” with Taliana and having little this’s and that’s dropped into a basket in weeks previous, so he was primed for the occasion. He didn’t say “tick teet” on-demand, but at times, he did select his own candy and drop it into his own basket…and he certainly wanted to carry his basket all by himself. He was at his happiest when he was down on the ground with the rest of the kids (or, probably, more accurately, like Taliana!).

I successfully kept him from eating any candy while we were in Santa Cruz, but once in Morgan Hill, he managed to break through a Tootsie pop wrapper and we just gave up on trying to wrest it from him.

Seeing Dylan be so into the festivities was so much fun! I’m glad he wasn’t scared at all…in fact, he loved all of the cackling tombstones and skeletons and sang itsy bitsy spider when he saw Cindy’s big fake spider in the kitchen…..

As usual, more photo highlights are on flickr. Christina was a bellydancer, Dre was Tiger Woods, mom was a devil, and we were all doctors (Tom had to be a mad doctor for SJSU, so we decided to make that this year’s costume theme for all of us!).

Jason’s 6th bday

Monday, October 8th, 2007

It was another busy week, ending with two birthday celebrations for little Jason, one with his friends and then one with family the next day!

Dylan enjoyed both (as did Jason!!). He adores his cousins — and, luckily, they love him right back! — and he really thrives on interaction and active and energetic play.

He is quite a good climber now; this past week, he successfully clambered up onto the first step of the playground structure (this step was at least half his height), one of our dining room chairs, the step ladder, Heather’s futon, and Taliana’s rocking horse. It’s a little scary. Not only is he good at climbing, he’s also very fast! At the playground on Friday, he was up several steps of the playground structure and on the bridge before I got to him!

This past week, Dylan has also developed a new relationship with his high chair. Whereas before he resisted eating in it for the duration of a meal, he is now proactively telling us he wants to “neat” and leading us to put him in it! Of course, he still says and signs “all done” when he’s still nibbling his last few bites, but it definitely feels like progress to have him initiating meals in the chair!

He’s also got his dancing shoes on a lot more lately and he’s taken to changing his stuffed animals’ diapers!

New words he’s added to his verbal repertoire these past 2 weeks: “drink,” “cup”, “car,” “help,” and an abbreviated version of “broccoli” (“coffee,” however, remains his #1 word, I kid you not. He sometimes absently sings the word as background to his current activity!).

Poor little Dylan was feeling lethargic and not himself at all this past Friday, but we headed to lunch and the park with lola, Auntie Cindy and Jason and Tyler anyway.

With Tylenol, he endured the afternoon pretty well!

I think more teeth may be coming in, but I actually can’t easily tell. Guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Cindy brought Jason, Tyler, Jason’s friend Evan and my mom down to Santa Cruz for a day at the beach.

It was another opportunity for Dylan to wear that cute little sun romper of his!

As always, much fun was had by all.

And, as if that weren’t enough fun already, we headed to MY Museum right afterwards! Dylan loved the magic paint board, but he also liked the moon sand table, the magnet table, and the toddler room.

Today’s day trip was a great way to wrap up the long weekend! The rest of the photo highlights are here.

Today was another full Dylan day. We started out with a pancake brekky (thanks dad!) then headed to HAT’s for a collective trip to the Farmer’s market where we sampled (and got) some delicious Rainier cherries, some broccoli and some roasted corn. Afterwards, Cindy brought all of the boys to Santa Cruz for a visit, so we ate lunch at the Corner Cafe while Tom had another follow-up appointment for his eye. We then headed to Seabright Beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun.

After getting all tuckered out, we headed home for some Thai food and more hanging out time.

Dylan loved visiting with everyone (as usual) and stayed chipper until his postponed bedtime (9:45pm) at which time he promptly fell asleep! Hopefully, he’ll be good to go for tomorrow’s brunch with Uncle David and Taliana (hopefully, Tom and I will be, too!)….

Cindy, Jason and Tyler headed down to Santa Cruz because it was such a gorgeous day and Dylan was finally well enough to hang out with folks.

It was a great opportunity for Dylan to wear his little sun romper! Sure, he looked like he came straight out of a spaceship, but hey, he was protected with SPF 50+!

He was so tuckered out already — he’s still recuperating from croup and some pretty tough, restless nights — but he had so much fun playing with his cousins, he was cheery up until bed time!
