Boy, it’s been a while since I’ve posted, but finally, here are a few photo highlights from this year’s 4th of July celebration. As has been the case since Dylan was born, we went to Morgan Hill to spend some time with the family — there was a barbecue and swimming at Cindy’s house and then we headed to the park to see some fireworks.

This year, we tried working on some swimming skills with Dylan (to save some bucks, I opted out of enrolling him in more formal swimming lessons). Instead, it was just us, telling him to kick, kick, kick and to “cut the pizza, spread the sauce,” a “technique” we learned from Taliana (imagine your two hands together, sticking straight out in front, chopping into the water (cutting the pizza) and then pushing the water out from the center to your sides (spreading the sauce))! He kicked around the pool with a noodle and we occasionally let him go so he could see that he could float on his own….!

After eating some corn and dinner, we all headed to the park where the kids rode in the wagon, played on the playground, climbed a tree, and saw a cute little family of ducks, complete with mommy, daddy, and 8 little ducklings!

Dylan, of course, did not nap! And, he also stayed awake for the fireworks show (which, gratefully, was not canceled as it was last year!). He covered his ears the entire time and later told us that his favorite ones were the “quiet” ones that sent down “sparkle…..”

Day 125: Taliana, Jason, Tyler, Zoe, Alexa and Dylan
Day 125: Taliana, Jason, Tyler, Zoe, Alexa and Dylan

This was the first fourth of July sans fireworks we’ve ever had! But, the fireworks folks (or fire marshal?) in Morgan Hill felt the winds were too risky to put on the show this year. We arrived at the park at 7pm and waited and waited and waited while the band played for hours, and finally, at 10:30pm, they announced that the show was canceled. Bummer.

We suspected they’d cancel after they didn’t start the show at 10pm (the originally rescheduled time) because none of us could detect any changes in the wind conditions and couldn’t imagine that they’d change anytime soon!

All of the kids had really been looking forward to it — Dylan was so excited to see all of his cousins AND Taliana — that, even as he was dropping off at 9:30-ish pm, he was still saying “want see fireworks”!

This was the first year that he probably would have really dug seeing them, so it was a bigger bummer than it might have otherwise been, but hopefully Santa Cruz will set off some fireworks for their anniversary celebration in October and we won’t have to wait another year for him to see some….!

Although it was altogether disappointing to have a fireworks-free celebration, it was probably better not to have risked fire given the drought and dry conditions….

The day started relatively early with a BBQ lunch at Cindy’s house, some swimming, and a game of charades (of course, Tom just rocked!).

Here we all are at some park near Cindy’s house, waiting for it to get dark and for the fireworks show to commence!

There was much pre-show playing and snacking. As you can see here, the kids had fun with their glow-in-the-dark bracelets…Dylan included! He even used his to illuminate his cup of Teddy Puffs!

Dylan is just adored by all (in this picture, he’s with my cousin’s eldest daughter Zoe), so of course he wanted to stay awake!

You can only imagine how tired little Dylan must have been by the time the fireworks began!

finally sacked out!

He managed to stay awake for the first 10 minutes of the show — he loved it, by the way. The show began with a few teasers set off a few minutes apart from one another, and when Dylan saw the lights in the sky, he just started squeaking and clapping his little hands! But, despite his valiant efforts to ward off sleep, he finally succumbed!

There are lots of good pictures to be seen, especially since Christina was the one behind the camera while Dylan kept my hands full! Ieanna posted a nice album, too.
