"more!" (I think)
"more!" (I think)

Cameron started off strong with the solids. She seemed to really like the rice cereal…and she especially likes handling her own little cup even if she can’t get anything out of it yet!

This picture was taken on Day 4 of rice cereal. She looks happy, but later that evening, she puked up a storm. And then the next night, several hours after eating banana for the first time, she puked again! It seemed strange that she’d be allergic to foods as innocuous as rice cereal and banana, so we called the doc. We were told that it was probably a tummy virus, so rather than agitate her poor little digestive system, we opted to give her a break! We will try resuming solids tomorrow….

So, with the solids thing…we’ve also done away with the high chair figuring these cute little portable boosters with trays would work just fine. When Dylan was young, we kept one at home and kept the other one in the car. Not sure if we’ll be able to do that again with Cameron since, as you can see, Dylan wants to be in one too now, despite the fact that his legs are really far too long for the tray to fit comfortably on top (he can’t bend his legs!) and he really began to despise the thing quite a while ago!

We don’t normally feed Cameron on the floor like this, by the way. Dylan wanted to sit right.next.to.Cameron and this was the easiest and most agreeable way to do it!! They both enjoyed dining together…!

Dylan’s ear gets a bath

We’re so sad that we had to miss Jason’s 8th bday celebration yesterday. We celebrated P.’s birthday on Friday night and when we got home, Dylan was rockin’ a pretty high fever. He was obviously in a lot of pain, too. He just wanted to be “carried” and when I asked him what hurt, he told me his ear did. We gave him some Motrin which at least allowed him to sleep…until 4am! So, I let him sleep in until about 9:30am before taking him into Urgent Care.

Dylan was such a trooper! Everyone in the waiting room thought he was so cute. They’d decorated it for Halloween, and Dylan had a running commentary on everything he was seeing: “that spider is waiting for bugs to eat…”, “that’s the mommy spider and those are the babies…”, “that’s a Mickey Mouse pumpkin!” (yes, the Hankey Mouse phase is definitely over!), “…they’re getting ready for Halloween alright….” And, the med assistant was so impressed with Dylan, he wanted to make a glove “balloon” for him!

Anyway, when it came time to check his ears, the P.A. couldn’t see past Dylan’s wax! Apparently, this guy generates oodles. It doesn’t put him at higher risk for ear infection because the wax build-up is in front of the drum, not behind it where the infected pooled fluid is, but it may affect his hearing (and it certainly affected his exam!).

Dylan was really not looking forward to getting his ear flushed and was near tears, but luckily it was Timm who came back to do it. He was very reassuring and explained exactly what he was going to do (drops in the ear, wait 10 minutes, give the ear a bath). He was able to flush out some wax before Dylan started wincing. As soon as Timm saw this, he stopped and then blew up another glove “balloon” for Dylan. Timm was so nice, Dylan was asking where he went after he left the room!

Since they had trouble seeing past Dylan’s wax(!), the appointment took quite a long time. Afterwards, we went to pick up Dylan’s medicine — he’ll be on amoxicillin for the next 10 days — and while we waited, I nursed Cameron in the car (who, of course, was just a gem and remained asleep during the doctor’s visit!) and Dylan and I ate “lunch” (Trader Joe’s food) in the car. When Dylan saw his medicine, he was delighted: “It’s pink! Because I like pink!” At least we’re not having any trouble giving it to him (so far)!!

Back at home, it was all about chillaxin’ on the couch. Just as we were all beginning to drift off, Tom came home. Dylan was so excited to see him, the nap went out the window! He’s definitely lethargic. We put on some movies for him and gave him lots to drink (he has no appetite) and then propped Cameron up on the pillow with him for a picture. Being a big brother always makes him smile!

Dylan at the office
Day 158: Dylan at the office (makin’ phone calls to Taliana!)
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

It’s been a long, long week! Both Tom and I had hectic work schedules — he wrapped up teaching geometry but gave two presentations on Thursday and Friday, and I had a Friday — which left both of us getting an itty bitty amount of sleep. In the meantime, Dylan spiked a fever which kept him out of daycare (and our usual weekly fun stuff) on Monday, Tuesday AND Wednesday!

Luckily, both Tom and I were able to stay at home with him during the worst of it (Tuesday). On Wednesday, he seemed well enough for me to go into the office for a half day, but he still had enough of a fever (101) to keep him out of school.

After lunching together, Tom and Dylan dropped me off at work where Dylan had so much fun typing on the ‘puter, his laptop, and making important phone calls. He clearly enjoys being at my office far more than I do!

Anyway, we vaguely suspect that the fever is related to more teething (2nd year molars), but when I stuck my finger in his pie-hole, I didn’t feel a thing. Still, he’s been jamming his fingers far back into his mouth and abruptly crying out in pain; his appetite is down and, on Tuesday and Wednesday, he awoke at 1am and didn’t get back to sleep for another hour. If new molars are the cause, we sure hope they come in soon…!

Day 99: yay! fever of 104.3 finally breaks. We're all happy. What a little trooper.
what a little trooper.

This past week has been all about sickness and visits to Urgent Care and Pediatrics! Yucko is right! It all started last Tuesday when Dylan had an absolute fit with Tom while I was in the shower. We both thought he was just being a major mommy cling-on, but at breakfast with Taliana and Heather, he actually fell asleep in my arms. Hmmm. And then he was really pretty mellow in Music Together.

Later that day, when I picked him up from daycare, I noticed he felt a little hot, so I stayed home with him on Wednesday. He was still fairly alert and still eating, but by Thursday, things were worst — fever of 104F, no eating, he was completely lethargic, didn’t want to play, etc.

Doctors in Urgent Care diagnosed him with an ear infection (described as ugly with pus) and a sore throat. The strep culture came back negative, but he was prescribed amoxicillin for his ear.

Well, by Saturday, his fever was still at 104 and a chat with the doc revealed that ear infections usually don’t have a persistently high fever like this, so back we went to urgent care!

We were told that maybe the antibiotic wasn’t working (it apparently only works on 75% of the strains of bacteria) and to check back on Monday.

Although his fever was lower on Monday, it was still there, so we went back to the doctor (this time Pediatrics) to confirm the decision to switch antibiotics and to also ask about his hearing (he’d begun to articulate less well). Glad we went; it turns out his throat looked awful, but his ear was improving. So, the ear is responding to amoxicillin, but the throat thing is viral (not responding to the antibiotics).

Today, Dylan finally was well enough to spend his half day in daycare where he apparently had a good day! And, he’s back to eating and drinking.

All throughout the fevers and pain, he’s been a trooper! He’s clearly on the road to recovery. He’s back to his jovial little self — making jokes, pushing our buttons, testing limits, chattering on….It’s great to have him “back”!!

Last Wednesday, mom and Mike came over to watch Dylan while I worked. He was recuperating from roseola, but the upside to that was he got to spend the day with family AND his rash was finally dying down (and, of course, he’s immune to it from here on out!).

Prior to the roseola diagnosis, he was super duper irritable and fussy! He had a fever of 103.5 and wasn’t eating or drinking much so we took him to Urgent Care on Sunday morning. At that point, they couldn’t tell what it was, so he actually had to have a little urine bag taped up to him so we could collect a urine sample and rule out bladder infection!

It was definitely a tough weekend, but at least it’s over and done with and he’ll have one less sickness to worry about catching in his bright little future!

Dylan’s lost a few ounces off his cheeks owing to a nasty, nasty (nasty!) tummy bug he contracted last week. He was literally dripping poo and spurting vomit. He nailed his carseat, our bed, our bed, our bed, and, oh, me. It was a weekend of much laundry and spontaneous bathing. Poor thing is finally recovering…and he’s really been such a trooper through it all.

We expect his cheeks to be back to full inflation by the time we get to LA.

Incidentally, this picture here has nothing to do with illness…I just thought it was cute! Auntie Christina sent it to me from her cameraphone right before Dylan got sick.

at Music Together
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Alright, where’d we leave off??? It’s been a busy, busy weekend, culminating in poor baby Dylan getting a fever. Every cloud has it’s lining, they say, and I guess, for Dylan, it’s that he can’t go to daycare tomorrow.

In any case, the weekend started with a little Music Together. Once again, Dylan was ready for a nap before we stepped out the door, but he just loved the class!

bday gal with Dylan

On Saturday, we celebrated Christina’s 25th bday.

We busted out Dylan’s swim trunks and sunscreen and set him loose in the yard.

As usual, he had fun playing with his cousins and he met a new friend, James (Christina’s friend’s little brother)….

mom’s bday lunch at Sino’s

Finally, on Sunday, we took mom out for a bday lunch at Sino.

Dylan’s good mood finally wore thin…His lack of naps caught up with him and he was feverish at the end of the day, but Cindy and Christina and mom and I still had an enjoyable lunch, and Dylan, as per usual, didn’t want to miss a second, so he stayed awake until we said goodbye (at which point, he promptly sacked out)!

Poor little thing is now sleeping and, hopefully, is on the mend as I type….
