waiting for Dylan
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Dylan signed up for another session of art at the Tannery Arts Center–this time, Animal Art. Some days, I’m able to sneak away for a short run or do another hour of work before I get the girls; on other days, I go get them and they go nuts on the little play structure while we wait for Dylan to finish. Sometimes, by this time (4-5pm), Chloe is rampin’ up her grumpy.

all smiles

Cameron, the seasoned non-napper, is all smiles. She uses whatever bars she can find to demo all of her new tricks to me. Now, she’s hanging from her knees with no hands. I can barely watch, especially when she starts to swing herself (yikes! A vision of her falling right on her head flashed briefly through my mind!)! She does bars every day at school and has blisters to show for it…and muscles, too!

She is definitely inspiring Dylan to challenge himself more (in fact, today, he had me write out a bunch of “bar challenges” on a pad of post-it’s — these included “hang from the bar for 15 secs…30 secs, 45 secs, 1 minute). Climb half-way up; Climb all the way up. Each “challenge” had a checkbox below it that he could check off). I hope he succeeds!!

Animal art is now over, so the teacher hosted an “artist’s reception” and we got to see Dylan’s artwork for pretty much the first time! I was very impressed. He loves art and I like the teacher so I’m considering doing some drop-in classes until school gets out, but getting him to art does involve leaving work early which is not always convenient!

Wendy and James’s wedding – 04/27

All of the kids are pretty excited about Auntie Christina’s upcoming wedding, so they were pretty excited, too, about my friend Wendy’s wedding (we worked together at AOL, long, long ago!). Cameron wanted to see what the flower girls did and Chloe just wanted to dance (as I’d told her we’d dance together!).

As it turned out, the wedding was a Sunday evening one (on a school night), so we couldn’t stay for the dancing. That didn’t stop Chloe and Cameron from dancing to their own tunes, though!

piano recital and lunch with Lola – 5/3

piano recital day
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Last weekend, Dylan participated in his second piano recital. He played 2 songs, both flawlessly. This time, K. also performed, so while I tried to take a picture or two (between songs), Heather videotaped the performance for us!

Anyway, these performances are really quite sweet and the kids really are pretty talented. Also, now that Dylan is on to his second lesson book, it was kind of fun to hear some of the newer students play songs that he had already mastered–it was nice perspective on his piano journey thusfar.

Lola and Grandpa Mike came up to watch, too, and we treated them to a post-Lola/pre-Mother’s day bday lunch beforehand.

Cameron is now expressing a strong interest in learning piano as well so I think we will try to start lessons after Kindergarten starts when we’ll have a better sense of how she is adjusting, what her school load (in Spanish!) will be like, and whether we all feel she’ll be able to handle the additional activity (especially since she’s already registered for Fall soccer this year).

Anyway, here are some pictures from recital day. And, if you’re wondering why Dylan’s hair is so long, it’s because he really doesn’t want to cut it!!

the mid-April lowdown

Well, things have been humming along here, so fast, in fact, that I’m super tardy with the blog updates. Sorry kids! Your mom kicked coffee and kept sleeping through the night!

Anyway, one of the big news items is Cameron’s acceptance into the Dual Immersion program at school! There were only 8 spaces available for this fall’s incoming kindergarten class, so we feel extremely fortunate to have gotten a space!

We did not try to enroll Dylan in this program because we knew so little about it and were concerned that we would not be patient enough for him to “catch up.” But, Cameron has already mastered much of the Kindergarten graduation requirements: she can write her name, she knows the alphabet, she can identify both capitalized and small letters, she knows numbers to 100, etc…She can also read many cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, do some basic arithmetic (given the 3-year age gap between the kids, she has gotten quite good at calculating everyone’s relative age!) and, more recently, she has learned to count by 5’s to 100 and learned the “doubles” rule from Dylan (2+2, 3+3, 4+4…so far, we have quizzed her to 12+12).

Also, since we asked her if she was interested in the program, she’s been practicing her Spanish. She’s asking teachers at school how to say words and she’s practicing her counting. Already she can count to 20 and she has basic colors down as well.

The greatest thing about the program is that it produces students who are academically proficient in both languages–the kids will have to meet Common Core standards in both English and Spanish. In junior high and high school, students who continue on the bilingual track are eligible to earn special certificates of merit for their bilingualism.

It’s a pretty exciting opportunity and we’re looking forward to learning Spanish from Cameron!!

In other, more general, news, on just about every non-rainy day, the girls and I are still heading to the beach for play dates with Kaden and Shane; Cameron is still loving dance (we’ve registered her for another session Pre-ballet with Teacher Jeannie, another session of Int’l Academy of Dance and 3 sessions of IAD summer dance camp!); Dylan is still enjoying piano and his art class at the Tannery Arts Center (this session is Animal Art–he has drawn several lovely birds and an opposum!); and Chloe is still doing Music Together.

Cameron is eager to start piano, Chloe runs around with her arms above her head in imitation of Cameron’s ballet, and Dylan is busy trying to stay one-step ahead of them!!

I’ll try to post more very soon!

She.is.Beautiful

the crew
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

This year, I ran She.is.Beautiful with Heather’s 2 daughters and with Chloe and Cameron in a double-stroller…and joined by Isa, T.’s classmate and Maya’s big sister!

I’d been worried I had either shin splints or a stress fracture so I hadn’t been running for about 2.5 weeks, so doing the Baby Mama 5K with all of the girls instead of doing the 10K was the perfect re-introduction to running training!

I can’t wait to run this event Cameron and Chloe.

It was a great event–not only because both T. and K. (as well as Isa) all crossed the finish line…running! They didn’t just run across, they sprinted!!

This was remarkable because I could see in Isa’s and K.’s faces that they were struggling during those last 2 miles. All of them did a lot of walking in the first mile causing me to feel a little anxious about the rest of the run! But, they allll persevered and were so supportive of one another, despite their varying abilities.

T. warmed up after 1.5 miles and was ready to run and run and run while Isa and K. were clearly struggling, but she didn’t complain or make them feel bad. In the meantime, Isa and K. held hands to support each other.

It was a little bit of a challenge for me to manage the differences–at one point, K. wanted to just stop and T. wanted to run! I said K. could wait until Isa’s mom caught up…or T. could run ahead and wait for us at the finish, but I told them I wasn’t comfortable with either of those options, so we had to stick it out together!

The girls are all so proud to have finished. T. wants to do another one and K. was so excited to tell her teacher about it. The other day at school, I saw the girls wearing their shirts from the event.

In the end, I am also reminded of exactly why I run and why I hope our kids run…it is such a confidence booster to know you can finish something you weren’t sure you would–I hope they look to that moment when they finished and recall that they made it despite their doubts!

I’m looking forward to running with them again next year (and with my girls, too!)!

Jenny and Julie
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Of course, we saw Jenny and her daughter Julie (who is Dylan’s age)! This was Julie’s second year running the event and they improved their pace by a whopping 1-minute per mile! That is no small feat!

Oh, I should mention, our day didn’t end here. Cameron spent the afternoon at a bday party for Ben and Sarah and Dylan went to HAKT’s house to play. Chloe sacked out from exhaustion!
