Dylan finally started swim lessons! We had to miss the first lesson because of his bday party, so today, he had to figure out what some of the kids already knew — windshield wipers (to wipe water off their faces) and blowing bubbles in the “underwater cafe”.

Ok, so we made a wise choice in putting him in the beginner class. He really didn’t like putting his face in the water to blow bubbles.

The teacher got the other two gals to blow bubbles by telling them they could get anything in the underwater cafe–chocolate, donuts, pizza….So, they blew x number of bubbles which corresponded to x number of pizza or whatever it is they “dove” under for….But, Dylan? When asked what he wanted in the underwater cafe, what was his response??? “Nothin'”…Sigh!

Oh, and let me back up to the beginning of the class. Each student got to give the teacher a shower by dumping a whole bucket of water over her head! After they poured water on her (giggling all the while), she gave them a little “shower” and instructed them to wipe the water off their faces with their windshield wipers. As I watched this, I thought, uh oh, she should have started with Dylan so he wouldn’t know what was coming! Sure enough, when it came to his turn, she asked him if he wanted to give her a shower and he politely declined. She tried to encourage him with, “really?? You get to pour water all over your teacher’s head!” He just shrugged. Luckily, she’s a very patient teacher and she just poured water on his shoulders!

But, as you can see, he did have fun. The last few minutes of class involved a game where the teacher put swim rings around them and let them kick/float in the water. At first, Dylan thought doing a “big rocket” would be fun, but when water splashed into his mouth and eyes, he propelled himself back to the stairs (woo hoo!). The teacher swung him back out into the water and he really did have fun spinning around with her. He also really did start kicking on his own…pretty naturally!

Since we missed last week’s class, we’re taking him back tomorrow for a make-up class. He has already expressed hesitation, but hopefully, he’ll get into it…if even a little.
