It was Halloween party day at Dylan’s pre-school today and, amazingly, we managed to pull off a Swiper costume for Dylan! We picked up supplies for it on Sunday and had no time during the week to do anything with them. On Wednesday night, I started getting anxious…he couldn’t go to school without one!!
Tom and I dyed, measured, cut, sewed and fabric-taped a sweet little outfit during the wee hours of the late-night (Thursday)/early morning (Friday/today) and put on the finishing touches just a couple of hours before the party started. Tom did an absolutely fantastic job with the mask, fixing the ears I botched, and finishing up the tail!
After all was said and done, Dylan said he didn’t want to go to school; he said he didn’t want to wear a costume and he didn’t even want to bring it “just in case.”
Once we got to school, though, he saw all his little buddies in costume and before I was even out of the car, he was saying, “is my costume in back??” His buddies on the play structure could see him coming out of the car and they immediately were asking him where his costume was and telling him it was party day!
Once in his costume, it was all about fun (I think he’s telling Cleo, “Swiper no swiping.”)
Another enthusiastic response to his outfit from Jada. And Keala was telling him he could swipe cookies and candy today!
Once the kids were all lined up, we did a parade around the block. It was sprinkling just a little bit, but not enough to deter anyone.
When Dylan ran to go catch up with Finley, I got a shot of the tail (accomplished by dying two separate pieces of white fake fur in yellow and orange and then sewing the two pieces together–his pants were also dyed from gray to orange!).
Once back at the school, the kids had lunch and yummy treats! Luckily, on Wednesday when I’d dropped Dylan off, I’d noticed the kids were prepping cupcakes and sugar cookies, so we had enough warning and were able to whip up a batch of pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes and some vegan sugar cookies for Dylan to enjoy as well.
Overall, another super cute kiddie event. We still have a few finishing touches to make to the costume, but even if we don’t have time, Dylan is already happy with it as-is!
Back Log: At this time, 4 years ago (whoa!), Dylan and Finley attended their very first Halloween party together — at Finley’s house! Dylan was a pirate (in the front row of babies there) and Finley was Mr. T (right above the pumpkin next to the whoopee cushion!)
