Oh, yes. We did have a seder…well, kind of! It was on a Saturday and it was the last night of Passover (I believe). We just couldn’t manage it during the week what with school, work, 3 days of swimming (instead of 2) owing to a make-up class, the girls’ Friday school Easter egg hunt, etc., etc. And then, I’m embarrassed to say, we didn’t even make it through the Haggadah. We were running so far behind in preparations that everyone was famished before the meal was even half-way cooked!
We had all good intentions to start prep early on Saturday, but then Dylan was complaining of ear pain. Since we had 3 days of swimming, I suspected swimmer’s ear and figured we should get the antibiotics ASAP. He missed his eye appointment (while Cameron and I went to our’s) and trudged along with Tom to Urgent Care. A couple of hours later, they discovered he had huge wads of earwax in his ear!! And, several hours and a couple of ear treatments later, they were home and Dylan was complaining that everyone was shouting! What a bonus! No ear infection, AND they flushed his ears out. The medical staff were quite impressed with the amount of build-up!
Anyway, once we finally got going on our celebration, it was food first. Afterwards, we decided it was too late for the kids to possibly have the patience to sit through the Haggadah, so we just had them find the Afikomen and, while they played, us grown-ups chatted and called it a night.
That headlamp must have been the secret to Dylan’s success. He found the afikomen inside his made-from-cardboard-box microwave oven (oh, why did we ever buy any toys or play things at all?!).
This year, we had matzoh ball soup with disintegrated matzoh balls (still quite tasty!!), yummy carrots, a delicious charoset made by HAKT, salad with balsamic vinaigrette, and cantaloupe and watermelon…oh, and drumstick from Tofoo Com Chay. We kept it simple. I missed having matzoh toffee, but that stuff is just bad for you anyway!
Here’s our simplified seder plate. No carved lamb shank this year!
We simplified everything but look at how much fun this girl is having!
Chloe couldn’t eat the carrots (she hasn’t had almonds yet) or the charoset (which had walnuts), but she ate her fair share of melon and matzoh ball soup, enough to drench her clothes!
Here’s Dylan with the prize. He really wanted the prize to just be the afikomen, no other treat beyond that!
Well, it was fun, if incomplete. Next year will hopefully be a bit more sane!
