So, last Sunday (8 days ago), we went to a roller skating party for Nate and Camille and Dylan was having so much fun! But, at the end of the skate session, he fell down and landed on his shoulder! Tom’s initial range of motion tests seemed ok–Dylan didn’t have full range of motion, but Tom said he thought it was ok. Still, we saw a bump on his collarbone and that made us a little more anxious and more convinced that we should get his shoulder x-rayed.
While I stayed home with the girls, Tom took Dylan to Urgent Care. The PA suspected no fracture and the radiologist confirmed. We were even told that the sling was optional!
On Monday, Dylan was still a little sore, but he was still able to participate in soccer practice. Tom says Dylan was even telling him he was feeling better and better.
But then, on Wednesday afternoon, poor Dylan got knocked down. He landed on his left side and he came up crying. After that, I noticed that Dylan was in a lot of pain at soccer practice on Thursday. He tried to sit it out, but he wanted to participate so he’d try and then come back to me, wincing. For the next few days, he continued to try to keep his arm pressed against his body. Then, he’d occasionally just start crying, telling me it was hurting just from getting jostled.
By this time, we started thinking this didn’t seem normal to be in so much pain this many days after falling, so I scheduled another doctor’s appointment for today.
Today’s x-ray results: oblique fracture of the clavicle. Poor guy. I wish I could trade collarbones with him. Because of that stupid Wednesday fall, he won’t be able to participate in next weekend’s SuperKids Tri (which he was really looking forward to) and he won’t be able to run with me in Morgan Hill the weekend after that (another event he was eager to do). And, it will be another 5-6 weeks before he’ll be better. Hopefully, the pain will start subsiding sooner than that, though. I love this kid so dearly. I wish he didn’t have such bad luck with injuries.
