We had only 2 Turkey Trot kid finishers this year as poor Cameron had awoken at 3:38am that morning complaining of leg pain. As it turns out, she had a slight fever and, once her medicine kicked in, she couldn’t get back to sleep! So, as you can imagine, by the time 8:30am rolled around, she was already zonkered. She’d already been awake for a couple of hours before we left for San Jose; we’d taken the light rail to the start line (much hubbub) and they had to wait around for the 5K start. By the time the kids’ races started at 10am, she was out cold!

But, this was an epic year, nonetheless! Chloe ran her first Turkey Trot and Dylan ran the 5K for the first time!

Both kids loved it. Chloe was so sweet and so ready to run when it was her turn. She clung to my arm the whole time, but she was definitely game and running like a champ!

I actually ran the 10K and finished with my best time ever (7:58 pace, so 49:29 total) and I thought I might have a chance of running the tail end of the 5K with Dylan. So, I started walk/jogging the course backwards in search of them.

There were 10s of thousands of people, though, and I was doing all sorts of mental calculations to figure out how long it might have taken them to get to the start line, how long it would take them to travel a mile (factoring in some potential walking) and how long it would take for me to intersect with their path. I started to get worried after I passed the 2-mile mark and hadn’t encountered them yet. I walked way beyond them and finally got a hold of Tom on the cellphone. After several hang-ups, I finally gathered that they had just passed mile 2 so I had to run to catch up with them! And, I didn’t catch them until Dylan was already in the final stretch!

He looked great! I ducked in to go run across the finish with him, Tom and the girls.

He had a blast (said it was “easy”) and was even asking when he could do a 10K (answer: when he can run a full 5K without stopping).

It was nice that he got a good medal–it was the 10th annual, so the 5K and 10K runners all got the same medal! He was pretty stoked on it!

We are especially proud of this guy’s big effort!

We are happy to report his first official 5K results:
Finish: 43:00
Pace: 13:51
Next time, Dylan will start in the faster corral (10-11 minute milers) where he and parent-with-stroller(Tom or I) will have to maneuver around fewer people and we will try for a new PR.

After the run, we headed to Lola’s house for Thanksgiving yummies, but I’ll save the pictures for the next post (have yet to upload them from the camera).
