I officially started a new decade of life and, to celebrate, Tom and my big sister made a phenomenal multi-course vegan meal from recipes in the Millennium cookbook. Tom made the appetizer (barley corn risotto cakes with smoked onion chipotle sauce and lime pickled onion garnish) and dessert (chocolate almond midnight, pear cardamom sorbet, cinnamon sorbet, and nectarine sorbet) and Cindy made the entree (black bean torte with lime cilantro sauce). It was a small dinner with just family; it felt like the perfect way to start another year o’ life.
Cameron, of course, is getting older by the week (I’m so glad my own bday isn’t measured weekly!)! Today (or, actually, yesterday now), she is officially 3 weeks old! At this point, I can claim an improvement in managing the three of us while Tom is away at work. On Monday, Cameron and I took Dylan to gymnastics. His former “coach” started up a new gym which is more gymnastics-skills oriented and is much, much smaller. There were only 3 kids in Dylan’s group and I’m not even sure the other 2 will continue! We enrolled Dylan anyway thinking a month is a short-term trial and it might be good for him to get some one-on-one attention as well.
Dylan was awesome! He followed June’s instructions for her obstacle courses very, very well! And, he did a stellar job on the balance beams (at the old gym, he didn’t have much patience for balancing, so I was very impressed at how he just seemed to do it with such ease this time around!)!
Cameron nursed while Dylan was running and jumping around. At times, Dylan wanted me to go in and “play” with him, but when I told him I couldn’t just yet, he eagerly rejoined the group. At the end of class, we stopped by Coffeetopia for a steamed soy milk (for Dylan) and Italian soda (for me) and, happily, both kids nodded off in the car and we all got that siesta I’ve been longing for these past few weeks!
The following day, while Dylan was in school, Cameron and I endured blazing 94F temps walking the ~4 miles from home to downtown. She slept all the way there and woke up only after I’d procured a nice, cold Jamba juice and we’d found a good place to change diaper and nurse. Then, she slept all the way home!
This brings us to today–a busy day starting with a 9:30am Music Together demo class where we met Hailey (a friend from the mommy group and preschool) and met another mommy who just had her baby on August 2 and whose older son, it turns out, also goes to Dylan’s daycare (the mommy recognized Dylan!)! Amy, Hailey, Molly (Hailey’s 1-year old sister), Dylan, Cameron, and I swung by Coffeetopia for a quick cookie treat before Dylan and I headed over to the park to see his pals Cora and Anela and their mom, Carrie, and, quite by chance, we ran into Kristin and Amirah!
We left the park when it was clear Dylan was getting cranky, but despite having awakened early and having an eventful morning, he didn’t nap! Poor guy was left to play quietly on his own when I just sacked out on the couch with Cameron! Despite no nap, Dylan was just fine — a sign, I think, that we’re all adjusting to a new schedule and new routines!
Happy birthday! Glad I called you even though I didn’t know 🙂 Looks like you made out with that wonderful looking meal. Let’s meet up part way on the walk to downtown sometime.
Hey V.! Sounds good! My good, long-walk days are Tuesday and Thursday. I’ll definitely ring you up!
