I got a demo of the Monkey Bars progress right before school. At the end of the day, she told me she could do them! I loved how happy she was to share this news!
So, for the last weekday of Spring break, I took another day off! The rain was coming down pretty steadily, so I presented some options to the kids: watch a movie, go bowling, mini-golfing or do Laser Tag, or we could just have a cozy day at home…maybe we could even make dinner for daddy.
Well, the kids loved the idea of making a nice meal for Tom, so we pored over some cookbooks, discussed different options and assessed complexity and time and finally settled on a stir fry (Dylan was pretty keen on this idea).
We found a nice recipe to try and then discussed appetizer possibilities. I came up with lettuce wraps in the style of P.F. Chang’s and found a reasonably simple recipe for us to follow!
After that, I headed to the store for ingredients. Meanwhile, the kids were amazing and prepped the counter (cleared it off, wiped it down, etc.) for cooking!
I had them read the recipe first and establish a cooking “plan” before we collected ingredients. First up was making the sauces (these could be made in advance). While the kids measured and whisked away, I washed our knives and chopped onions.
Once they were done with sauces, we did all of the chopping prep…and the kids pretty much did all of the chopping!
After the chopping was done, it was still too early to cook, so we set out to prep the coconut pudding triangles and berries for dessert.
The kids were so excited and so eager! They wanted to set the table nicely and light candles, too!
The actual cooking time for both dishes totalled about 15 minutes and we timed it perfectly. We were wrapping up the photos of the finished dishes when Tom walked in! He was super surprised and so appreciative.
It was such a fabulous way to spend the day…!
A few pictures of the process and finished product are below:
I still tend to save my PTO for things like field trips, unexpected illness, etc, but I opted to take a couple of days off from work so I could spend some time with them over their break. On the first day of their break, though, I was at work so we met for lunch! They were with Nadja, who also happened to have her 9-year old sister with her (she was also on spring break), so it was kind of like a long play date, punctuated with a lunch break!
Seeing the kiddies is always a highlight of my day!
On the kids’ second day of Spring break, Nadja wasn’t available, so rather than scramble for someone to watch them, I decided to take a day off! Heather and the girls were also free! So, after we finished watching A Wrinkle in Time, we met Heather and the girls back at the house.
It was such a beautiful day, we decided we had to head outdoors. We took the nice trail up to the golf course–Chloe especially liked the little wood bridge we had to cross….
Also fun was the downed tree we came across on the path….
Headed to Tony and Sarah’s for another friendly, food-filled games day! I love that the kids are interested in playing, too!
After the big kids headed out to the nearby drugstore for an activity book for Chloe, T. joined the Catan game and Dylan joined the Alhambra game (by this time, Cameron was playing with me as a “team.” But, while the bigger kids were running an errand, she and Rachel played a game of Ticket to Ride!)!
Chloe had homework over spring break, so she actually made a fair bit of progress on this in addition to working on some coloring in her new Trolls activity book.
I’m not eager to see my baby grow up so fast but, of course, it’s inevitable!
This past weekend, we got a preview of the new teeth that will be pushing through soon!
Her legs are getting lankier, her reading is improving and she’s, overall, just getting more sophisticated with her speech! Time is passing quickly.
Chloe chanted about Darth Vader then mussed up Dylan’s hair to make him look like Luke Skywalker.
Yep, we finally introduced Star Wars to the kids right around last month or so. All but Episodes 1-3 have now been seen.
Dylan is transformed…thoroughly enjoying seeing him really geek out on it!
And, Cameron asked a great question: if Leia is a princess, why isn’t Luke a prince??
Tom and I attended the company post-holiday holiday party at some stadium in San Jose. The most fun thing about it was getting some swag for the kids. Taliana is actually old enough to babysit, so she stayed with the kids while we were out…when we got home, all the littles were asleep, but the bigs (T. and D.) were still up. Dylan was excited to see the goodies!
One of the best things about IAD’s Spring dance shows…costumes!!! Cameron once again busted out her Sneetches outfit for Seuss Day.
One of the best things about having 2 girls…hand me downs! Chloe donned Cameron’s red Thing 2 outfit!
We actually lost Cameron’s original Sneetch star, but luckily, we had a package of foam Chanukah stars (go figger!) so we grabbed a white one and quickly colored it with a green Sharpie. Glad we could pull this off!
I forgot Dylan also has a Horton the Elephant costume…maybe one of the girls will wear that next year!
