on the way home…

On the way home from Legoland, we were able to squeeze in a very brief visit with Grandma Sharon and Papa Willard. Dylan was sooo excited to see them!

Because traffic between Oceanside and Los Angeles was ungodly bad, it took forever (or maybe 3 hours?) to get from Point A to Point B. Chloe, of course, couldn’t last that long in the car seat, so we also had to take a Starbucks break en route. As a result, we couldn’t stop by Eli and Rocky’s Ping Pong Palooza (which sounded like such a fun thing!).

After dinner with the family, we didn’t end up getting back into Santa Cruz until 3am, but the stop was well worth it.

We’ll look forward to spending more time (fingers crossed) when we’re there over Labor Day weekend–time is so elusive these days…!

While Dylan’s been at camp (swimming, visiting the oldest cemetery in the city, walking through Neary Lagoon, and making paper mache dragon eggs), Cameron and I have been doing our own exploring.

This past Wednesday, we visited the newly opened Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center and then had a nice lunch at Saturn; on Thursday, we hit the park and had pho for lunch, and today we went to gymnastics (with our usual post-class stop at Coffeetopia, this time accompanied by a newfound buddy named Aidan and his mom Hope) and then we all went to another park!

We’ve also gone to 2 Studio Sprout days (one day was to make-up for the class we missed while we were in San Marcos) and we’ve forgone the finding of 2 geocaches–in one incident, a little girl we’d just met at the playground grabbed Cameron by the neck…TWICE! Poor Cameron was frightened to bits.=(

These past three days, we have stayed out of the house alllll day….Sometimes, it is easier to keep up our momentum by not settling in back at home! Now, it’s nice that everyone is sleeping soundly and hopefully, they will all sleep in tomorrow!

We got babysitters for the night for all of the kids (T. and K. and Dylan and Cameron) and took off to see Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s production of The Man in the Iron Mask. Chloe had to come with us, of course!

She fell asleep before the show started and I thought we were off to a good, calm start! But, she woke up just as soon as the play began!! She didn’t cry at all, but she was kind of gassy and, as a result, she was grunting and groaning a lot! So, I took her to the back and walked her up and down in the hopes that she would fall asleep.

The girl was so interested in all the hubbub up on stage — lights, strange voices, booming, sword fights, etc. — she managed to stay awake for the entire first half!! The upside was that she was out cold for the second half, despite booming, clapping, laughing, and all other manner of noise!

In the meantime, the big kids had Vallarta for dinner, presumably played well together, and were put to bed at about 9:30pm by our awesome babysitters. We came home to a quiet house (and, see, I now have time to write a post!). It’s late, but I’m so tempted to stay up just because it’s all peace and quiet and down time for me now! Tomorrow will be another day..and we’ll have T. and K. to up the energy levels in the house!

She’s rolling this way and that and propelling herself towards toys she wants, she’s beginning to sit up on her own, she coos and laughs and smiles and she’s already showing some eagerness for starting on solids. All of this has happened in an absolute blink of an eye.

Next week, I head back into the office (albeit part-time) which underscores just how quickly time has gone by.

So the first day was just me and the kids, a day not without it’s fair share of challenges! We got into San Marcos only at 3am or something. We left Santa Cruz at 4pm, but had to stop for dinner, to comfort Chloe, to go to the bathroom, blah blah. At the end of it all, an 8-hour drive became an 11-hour one and Tom and I got very little sleep. All told, I was operating on only 3 hours…and noooo caffeine. Bummer. But look at this smile?? In the end, Day One was worth it. The kids still had a blast.

One of the kids’ favorite rides was Fairy Tale Brook. It’s totally mellow and has a little scene from The 3 Little Pigs, 3 Billy Goats Gruff, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Hansel and Gretel. They wanted to ride it again and again! It was awesome that the line for this ride was short!!!

On our first day at Legoland, Tom was at a meeting at CSU San Marcos! This meant we could only ride the things I could go on with the baby on my chest and rides that Dylan was tall enough to chaperone Cameron on…

He loved being the Big Brother!

He held her hand, helped her up the rides, made sure she was heading towards the exit, etc. In short, he was great!

how to get new clothes

IMAG0415.jpg
forced clothing buy
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

On the first day at Legoland with the kids, I got both Cameron and Dylan some Legoland hats (we forgot Dylan’s hat at the hotel and we had to get a hat for Cameron in the interest of “fairness”), but there was no plan whatsoever to buy any souvenir “gear” for Chloe.

She must have sensed this subconsciously! While we were enjoying a leisurely lunch at one of the park’s restaurants, Chloe unleashed a huge sploot that shot up her back. Bad luck that I didn’t pack an extra onesie in the stroller for her! But, what luck that this happened on Day Two. This meant I wasn’t alone–I had Tom to help out! He changed her and then afterwards, I took Chloe (clad only in a diaper) to find a new onesie while Tom stood in line for rides with the big kids.

The choices were pretty limited (i.e., just ONE style!) and, of course, it said, Legoland! And, boom, just like that, she had her own little Legoland keepsake!

Boardwalk Day

carousel love
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Dylan’s been in summer camp for the past 2 weeks and has been absolutely loving it. He’s gone on so many field trips — Main Beach, Happy Hollow in San Jose, Beckmann’s Bakery tour, Harvey West pool, local parks…It’s been a big step for us since this is the first time we’ve really entrusted other people to take Dylan to crowded public places without us! I don’t think we’ve even ridden the local county transit buses with him and he most certainly has never been driven over the hill to SJ without one of us!!

While he’s been there, Cameron and I have continued to do our own activities together — puppet shows at the local library, play dates with friends, etc. This past week, we went to the Boardwalk with Kaden and some friends (Kelly and her kids Kathleen and Kevin) whom we haven’t seen in quite some time.

We met at the carousel, so that was Cameron’s first ride.

We were also there to see the circus, so we stuck to rides that were close to the stage. Luckily for me (and Cameron!), Kelly’s friend’s daughter Maya was there and she could chaperone Cameron on a few rides, including Speedway.

During the circus show, we all ate lunch on the beach. And, afterwards, we rode a few more rides. Cameron was pretty tired by then, so after a couple of rides on the Cave Train, we wrapped it up and went home!

Chloe can kind of sit up on her own, using her chubby thighs as a nice wide base, but she can’t really stay up for very long all by herself. We prop her up in the couch corner so she could have a more interesting (or at least different) view of the world around her. She’s really getting into exploring/mouthing her toys these days!
