cameron’s a walker + new bike!

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

We had another great week with the kids. On Wednesday, Finley, Cleo and Mariah came over for dinner. Cleo was so sweet interacting with Cameron, sharing things with her and talking with her as if she were already one of the big kids! Cameron wanted to follow her around!! And, so, I think without putting too much thought into her actions, she stumbled after Cleo and realized that, hey, she can walk!

The next day, she was noticeably better and by Friday, when we stopped by Heather’s house, she was out the door exploring every closet and room she could get to. We’re calling it official: she’s a walker!

To add to this weekend’s excitement, on Saturday we finally picked up the Yuba Mundo from our local bike shop. A couple of weeks ago, a friend of our’s showed us their whopper of a bike that could transport TWO kids in child seats right on the back. That bike is the Yuba Mundo, a 60-pound steel frame, long-tail cargo bike with a 440-pound carrying capacity! And let me tell you, it rocks!

The idea of riding with both kids on one bike seemed appealing, though challenging. But after reading recommendations by TreeHugger and EcoVelo as well as various other reviews raving about how smoothly it rides and proclaiming how easy it was to tote kids, your spouse, groceries and, heck even other bikes, the idea of trading in some car time for a more environmentally-friendly transpo option just grew and grew on me (and Tom). So, we finally bit the bullet and got it!

Tom rode it home from the store on Saturday afternoon and made it up every hill he encountered, including our very steep driveway! Then, once I refueled from my 14-mile morning run, I took it to the grocery store for my own test drive–even I made it up our driveway, groceries in tow (and tapped out legs)! I was stoked!

Today, we rode it downtown for haircuts (but Dylan refused to get his cut today, so it was just me), checked out the distance to the Boardwalk and explored the feasibility of riding home (an all uphill ride). Everything was awesome (though we were only towing Dylan around and back home from downtown since Cameron refused to wear her helmet). Dylan didn’t even want to get off the bike!

After a successful afternoon of “test riding”, we headed out to catch Circo Brazil, a free circus performance, over at the Boardwalk.

We picked up falafels from Falafel Hut (decidedly mediocre food and service!) and ate them on the beach while we waited for the show to start and for Heather and Taliana to arrive. After the circus (the kids were most impressed by the cartwheels and trampoline acts!), the kids rode a few rides, including the new Haunted Castle ride!

The approach we took on the ride was that it was silly (“did you see those rats in the kitchen?? we wouldn’t want to eat there! Noooo thanks!) so he wasn’t terribly scared. He even successfully persuaded Taliana to ride it with him!

We didn’t have time to bathe the kids tonight so they are super grubby, but we’ll get to that tomorrow!

Little gal just makes a splash wherever she goes these days — literally and figuratively! Just in the past couple of days, she’s progressed with her walking skills. Two days ago, she took a whopping eight steps and today, after school (when we got the report that she’d surprised a teacher by taking five steps), she just kept at practicing. We applaud her diligence!

Cameron looks totally mellow in this picture but, for sure, we haven’t been sitting around! This past weekend, we celebrated Ellie’s 4th birthday and Uncle Assaf’s 40th (whew!).

Assaf’s birthday celebration was at HAT’s house (Heather, Assaf and Taliana). The kids splashed around in a kiddie pool and played ladder golf, an interesting game that Dennis (Heather’s dad) made for Assaf.

So, that was Sunday! On Saturday, we went to Pump It Up in Sunnyvale to celebrate Ellie’s 4th. Both kids enjoyed pushing each other in these cars. Dylan loved the obstacle course (and made me do it over and over and over and over again with him!) and Cameron enjoyed the bouncy play area for smaller kids!

Tom got in on the fun, too…!

But that was not all we did, no, that was not all!

A new vegan cinnamon shop opened up in Berkeley, so after Ellie’s bday celebration, we decided to head over there for the afternoon for the grand opening….They were delicious!

Tom also wanted to eat at Cha-Ya, a vegan Japanese restaurant (highly recommended), so while we waited for dinner hour to roll around, Tom took Dylan on the BART for a short ride (Cameron and I went window shopping at the games store).

All in all it was another tiring weekend, but also lots of fun all around!

The only prob with fun weekends is that Mondays are especially hard. =T

Last Sunday, while Tom and I were running the Jungle Run, Auntie Christina watched the kids for us and caught Cameron on video taking her very first step (that we’re aware of)! Then, just last night(Wednesday), she took three steps all on her own! Not only that, she’s so excited about … sumpthin (walkin’? pipsqueak markers? standing up??), she bounces high enough that she occasionally actually lifts herself a few centimeters off the ground!!

To mark Month 11, she’s started on potatoes, asparagus and barley. She has also watched Taliana and Dylan use the elephant chair (pictured here) and the monkey chair on numerous occasions, and she discovered she really enjoys climbing up and sitting in them herself!!

One of her favorite activities is playing with Pipsqueak markers and, just within the past couple of days (since discovering she can climb and sit in the “big kids” chair), she’s developed another hobby: sitting in a big kids chair and placing Pipsqueaks into the cup holder. If the monkey and elephant chairs are side by side, she’ll busily transfer the Pipsqueaks from one cup holder to the other!

Our little gal is an adventurer-in-the-making. She rediscovered her baby swing chair (detached from the swing frame to be a standalone rocker), climbs on it and jumps on it to make it rock back and forth. We put pillows behind her to protect her just in case she falls backwards! She’s also discovered that a happy consequence of being up higher means she can reach even more things on the train table.

All this climbing and “jumping” and step-taking is a development explosion that has just occurred over the past couple of days. We are enjoying watching her grow and develop…!

Dylan’s self-portrait

Dylan had his well-child check-up this past Friday (everything is all good, holding steady at around the 10th percentile all around and totally proportionate in terms of BMI) and one of the questions asked was whether or not your child could draw a human figure. Well, we’d never explored that before, so out of curiosity, I asked Dylan if he could draw a picture of himself, and this cute drawing is what came of it!

While he was drawing, I got the play-by-play: “Look mom, I drew my head…” and then, “Oh, I have no face” followed by, “look, mom, I’m smiling!”

It’s so reminiscent of Taliana’s first drawings of people….I love the picture!

Cameron, outstanding in her field!

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Little girl is 10 months old now and she just had a couple of momentous moments! While Tom and I were at work, she did her usual Thursday gig at Lola’s house and, while she was there, why she decided to stand up on her own for the longest time ever! She’d been starting to hold herself up on her own for a second or two, but this past Thursday, she kept on doing it and for long enough to allow Grandpa Mike to locate the camera, whip it out of carrying case, etc, turn it on, get situated, focus on her, and snap!!

Also, she’s started saying “uh oh” (and I mean, she says it allllll day long!), she clearly signs fan, her two top teeth are getting close to really breaking through the gums and she can now eat lentils and watermelon with us! Whew! And we thought we were busy…she just keeps growin’ and growin’ and growin’! Updated pictures are coming up soon. I haven’t had much opportunity to shoot photos, but Lola takes plenty on Mondays (she is now going to my mom’s twice a week) and Thursdays! I’ll try to post some.

Just yesterday, I started singing “clap, clap, clap your hands, clap your hands together…” and what did this sweet gal do? She started smiling and clapping. Wondering if the response was reproducible, I paused and giggled with her, then when she’d stopped, I started singing it again…and she started clapping! She gets it! It’s so cute!!

It’s one of those a-ha moments for us parents–we talk and yammer away with this trust that babies understand us, but the moment that comprehension manifests, it is always a delightful surprise…!

Cameron is on the move

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Just a few days ago, Cameron was doing a one-two, drop-drag and repeat to her target destination. On Friday (the first Music Together class of this session), she was still reluctant to travel any distance. Then, suddenly, on Saturday at the museum, she found all sorts of motivation to get her going. I took her into the infant and crawlers room to hang out (we never did get a chance to take advantage of this while Dylan was a crawler) and this display of ocean critters inside of it totally compelled her to crawl on over…!

Then, when we got home from the musuem, she was so enthused about being able to motor around, she was everywhere…and grinning ear to ear! Not content with just being able to get to appealing objects on the floor, she also started attempting to pull herself up. Now she can bring herself from a crawling position to a sitting position and start trying to pull up to stand…!

The most amazing this about all of this, of course, is just how quickly it happens!!

By the way, that thing around her neck is actually a headband…!

I’m in catch-up mode once again! Undoubtedly this post will be all disjointed and random, starting off with this cute little picture of Dylan with the Lion face painting he came home with last week (2/8/2010, to be exact!). He was obviously so proud of it! It was so cute, we couldn’t just go straight home, so we went shopping for groceries first instead. Dylan was a total maniac with his cart and he was very decisive about what we needed to get; he almost always decides we need bread and tofu and just pursues them independently of me. It helps that they’re within his reach. Beware, other shoppers!

This is what Dylan’s face actually looked like before he got his face-painting. And, see how happy Cameron is to be sitting right next to her big brother?? He’s quite a “role model,” meaning she’s learning how to chatter a mile a minute and scream loudly when she feels we haven’t heard her demands. Overall, though, I think we’re lucky we have two relatively happy campers….

And, of course, Cameron hit her 6-month marker! And, she’s still alive! She’s sitting up like a champ, gabbing on and on, rolling herself to wherever she wants to go, and grabbing at everything we put into our mouths! We started her on rice cereal on Valentines Day — just one tablespoon mixed with some breast milk. She seemed to like it well enough….

So, after we all had red velvet pancakes with maple-sour cream syrup, she enjoyed her cereal. Dylan even helped feed her! As you can see, she enjoyed her spoon the best….

We had a nice Valentines Day celebration with just the four of us. The day before, Lola, Auntie Christina and Uncle Dre watched the kids while Tom and I watched Avatar in 3-D! So, Vday itself was a family day. Tom made a yummy carrot-ginger soup, veggies crepes with a red bell pepper coulis and I quickly prepped some chocolate-coconut-almond fondue (we dipped fruit). Tom and Dylan also made a lot of faces.

I think we all enjoyed the long weekend — Dylan loved all of the Vday treats. He liked the fondue, but who doesn’t like a little chocolate???

To end our weekend, we stayed home trying to recover from various ailments–luckily, the kids are all better; it’s Tom and I that need more recovery time! Heather, Assaf and Taliana came over with a yummy hot and sour soup to speed our recovery, and I made a vegan pancit (Filipino noodle dish) that came out ok.

There’s been a lot that’s been going on lately, but maybe the next post, I’ll really catch up…!

And, yes, she’s gearing up for eating solids — exhibiting lots of curiosity towards food and drink and she’s really getting quite good at sitting up on her own. In fact, she really likes sitting up and she’s learned to use the arches on her playmat to help support herself! She also hangs on to her dangling toys to help steady herself!

She is also incredibly curious — it’s getting more and more difficult to keep her with me at work (we are now on week 2 (day 4) of her staying with a nanny). Not only does she grab for everything on my desk, she’s discovered her voice–and boy, is it loud!

Back at home, she truly is lovin’ the Big Bro. And he is so sweet to her. Right now, Dylan takes her hand and holds it as we’re going to sleep and immediately when he wakes up. Cameron kicks, giggles and squeals as soon as she sees Dylan! We can only hope that they continue to be this good to one another when they’re older!
