Entering while singing “Come and follow….” Dylan was pretty stoked. He woke up early that morning and was sooo excited!
Here’s a shot of the surfboard that all of the kids crossed during the “Bridge ceremony”–they walked from kindergarten to the future, side-stepping because shuffling across the surfboard is “not good style” (according to Juan)!
Here’s Dylan doing his chakas (hang 10’s) with the rest of his class–just another thing we’ll miss about teacher Juan. He has such character!
Juan gave a very nice “speech” on how nice it was to have all of the kids in the class this year; how they went through a lot together, learning, crying, laughing, him having fits. I loved the honesty! Then, he explained the significance of the surfboard bridge and called each kid up one at a time, noting something nice about each one as he did so. Of course, eventually, it was Dylan’s turn! Sage was so sweet being so happy for Dylan and holding up his hand to high-five him.
Dylan told me exactly how he practiced it and exactly what he would do at the end. He was going to do double-chakas and then give Juan a hug….
But, side stepping across the wobbly surfboard was actually tricky for the kids!!
We were stoked Dylan didn’t fall down.
Dylan forgot to show us his double chakas, but he definitely didn’t forget to hug teacher Juan! We will miss him, for sure!
Before the bridge crossing, the kids sang “Eyes of the World” and “Riding Along the City of New Orleans.” Afterwards, they sang, “Old Man”. I love it. I’ll miss the songs Dylan brings home from school…
Once the ceremony ended, it was recess. Dylan literally hung around outside!
He’s here with Marlon, Jr. who, incidentally, was the Top Achiever in the class (or something to that effect!). He’s Filipino (a rarity in Santa Cruz!).
Then it was play time. Maddie lives just down the street, but she’ll be moving soon. I love her mom, so I hope they don’t move far and I hope Dylan and Maddie are in the same class next year.
Yes, Cameron was there, too! Tom spent a lot of time during the ceremony trying to get her to stop kicking Junior’s back! Outside, she wanted to play with Dylan, too!
He is such a nice big bro!!
And here are a few more random shots of the kids outside their classroom….We will miss clump in the front and all of the classic rock songs, Teacher Juan’s great sense of humor and his style!
