Christina told us about Luke’s Run, an annual running event celebrating Luke Yden who lost his battle against leukemia in 2001 (at the age of 6). It was a wonderful and touching event — and Dylan’s first organized run!
Dylan has been “training” for a few weeks now. Every night, he runs laps (seriously), pumping his arms (his right arm, especially) as per Daddy-o’s coaching. He has been doing this voluntarily!!!
Of course, we’re tickled that he thinks running is fun…and when we asked him if he wanted to run a race with me (poor Tom is still not running), he was sooo excited!
So, it was very cool to hear about this free event (a good way to gauge Dylan’s interest in such things — I’m planning on registering him for the kiddie races at the Silicon Valley Half Marathon in October).
Christina and I ran the 5K, and after, we stayed for the kids races. 0-5 year olds had to do one WHOLE lap around the grassy area in the park…not a trivial distance at all!
He didn’t actually run around the whole thing. =( After a very strong start, he ran on to the grass, and when I redirected him to the pavement, he stumbled and scraped his hand and he didn’t feel much like running after that! But, after he had some time to regain his composure, we took him to the final stretch and he ran it in strong! He stopped as soon as his toe went over the finish line to reach his arm out behind him and call me!
He was pleasantly surprised to get a medal put around his neck! He’s very proud of it, and he wore his race bib all day long!
