This past summer, we once again participated in the Summer Reading Program put on by the library system. We get a nice record of Dylan’s favorite summer books for the year as well as $20 in summer reading dollars that we can then redeem at various local stores. This past Wednesday was the last day to use them, so Dylan and I headed into Borders (a bad name in these parts!) to use some of them up. While we were there, we saw an announcement for a Rumpus party that was to be held on Friday at 6pm. Well, this sounded good to us, so I mentally marked our calendar for it!
Tonight, we headed to the rumpus, with Dylan all pumped up about going — he even brought his stuffed Max doll. They were still setting up when we got there, but it turns out that nobody else showed up!
Dylan was soooo incredibly cute. He chatted the entire time he colored (a picture of Max looking out over the ocean)! Then, after what seemed like 30 minutes or so, one of the staff members began to read the story with much interaction from Dylan as he is so very familiar with the story he can recite much of it from memory! When we got to the point in the story where Max tames the wild things by staring into their yellow eyes, Dylan interjected, “Ohhhh, maaaan! They were frightened!” Then, we hit the point of the story when the rumpus begins….At this point, Dylan started talking about the “rumpus” he was going to attend and we had to keep on reminding him that, um, he was already at the rumpus! Once alerted to this fact, he declared, “I’m going to march!” and he got up to do a loop around the table!
He was still asking when the rumpus would start so Tom brilliantly declared that the rumpus was all for him! After more marching around the table (once the story was through), one of the staff members went and got him a promo poster for the movie and then we left to get dinner at the Saturn.
We were a little worried he was disappointed, but he told us he had fun at the bookstore. What a fantastic little guy he is…! I wish I took a picture or, better yet, captured Dylan on video yapping away, but I was too self-conscious to whip out the camera! Sigh. A picture of Tom and Dylan at our post-rumpus meal will have to suffice….
