Halloween!

For Halloween, Dylan wanted to be Max from Where the Wild Things Are. I had no idea what to do about this as there were no pre-made costumes available, but Aunt Christina’s buddy Angie was sooo awesome that as soon as she got wind of this, she offered to make the Max head piece! She finished it in less than a day, so then the pressure was on me to finish up the costume!

I was worried that he’d be disappointed by the costume (felt claws and white buttons sewn on to a sweat suit), but he LOVED it and so did everyone else!

By far, this was the funnest Halloween we’ve had with Dylan. He was absolutely fearless and he whole-heartedly embraced the role of Max.

Tom got super creative and did up an impromptu “Wild Thing” costume out of make-up, a wig and some comfy clothes he had laying around at home!

As it has been in the past, we participated in downtown trick-or-treating with Taliana and then went trick-or-treating in Auntie Cindy’s ‘hood with Jason (who was an “unexplainable dark lord”) and Tyler (a ninja). But, this year’s festivities also included celebrating with Dylan’s preschool. They had a little Halloween party with an itty bitty parade that went to the end of the street and around the block.

There are so many more pictures on flickr!

Poor Cameron, though, had no costume at all. She wore her cute Halloween-themed polka dot footsie outfit instead. But, luckily, she pretty much slept through the whole event anyway.

It’s been a bit challenging to post on Cameron’s actual week markers since we’re usually out and about all together and Dylan (seriously) talks non-stop from the moment he wakes up until the moment he sacks out!

These days, we are all usually up by 7:30am. More accurately, Cameron has a fussy-ish, gassy period between 4-6am, so both of us are not really sleeping well during this time, but the guys join us and we all fully awake by 7:30am! Then, poor little gal is sleeping a bit more lightly these days, awaking more often to little sounds around her…or big sounds made by big bro! She’s still getting in at least one multi-hour nap–about 3 hours–during the day, but this is usually after lunch when she’s just exhausted by constantly being awakened in the morning! If it’s not noise waking her up, it’s the constant getting in and out of the car. It seems as soon as she’s settled, either on me or in the car seat, it’s time to go! Still, she is a remarkably mellow baby and is still giving us a lot of smiles! Tuesdays and Thursdays, when Dylan is in school, are definitely her best sleep days. She’s able to get in 2 nice 50-minute naps, walking to and from downtown for baby lap time and she usually remains asleep for another hour or so once we get home (nice for getting a few chores done around the house!).

She’s “graduated” to using the Ergo baby carrier and we’ve also started being able to pull her up into a sitting position by her hands while she holds her own head up. She’s turning more onto her side, too, so perhaps rolling over is in her near future!

She also got some vaccinations today which has led to a very long nap (she is still napping in the Peanut Shell!)! This is good as we’re making Halloween-y cookies for tomorrow’s preschool Halloween party and for Halloween itself!

Here’s another picture of Cameron, staring up at her playmat star friend. I’m convinced secret, telepathic conversations are occurring between them! She often smiles and laughs while staring up at it! She has a similar response to the ceiling fan in our bedroom!

Here is a picture of Tom and Cameron celebrating Auntie Cindy’s birthday over in Morgan Hill.

Cameron was totally at ease hanging out with Lola and Auntie Cindy while Dylan checked out Jason and Tyler’s new gopher snake (he didn’t like it much!).

This past week, we also did some babysitting for Heather and Assaf who Tom was helping move into their new home(!). So while Tom was lifting lots of heavy things, Dylan and Taliana helped me make banana split cupcakes for the occasion.

a trip to the pumpkin patch

Cameron and I accompanied Dylan and his preschool to a local pumpkin patch! We walked from the school to the pumpkin patch where the kids then got to play and climb on the hay bales. Dylan and Finley apparently had a “castle” they needed to protect. They also had some sort of interesting exorcism moves going on involving arm crossing, head-nodding and mumbling to ward off (?) the monster on the inflatable tent structure!

The two of them were also carting the wagon all over the place. When Finley was asking for help, I came over, but was told, “no. Dylan can help” and Dylan did! It was very cute to watch them play together! Cameron, of course, was so awesome and didn’t wake up until we got home!

Well, I’ve given up on trying to stay downtown between the end of Dylan’s story time and the beginning of the Farmer’s Market! The past couple of weeks, Dylan has been downright adamant about not going and since I’m way more enthusiastic about summer produce anyway, I’ve just taken us all home at his request!

We still had to eat lunch, though, so to make it “more exciting,” we had a picnic lunch at home. Yep, we just spread out the blanket and slapped our plates down and ate!

Cameron is alert for about 2 hours at a time now, so it was actually super nice to be able to picnic at home. While we ate, she “played” on her playmat! All were content!

Cameron meets Griff

Our good friend Valentine gave us a call yesterday morning to let us know about the availability of free swine flu vaccinations for us. Since it was inadvisable for babies to come to the clinic with mom, she suggested a baby-care swap: while one mom was out getting vaccinated, the other would watch the babies.

That was awesome for a few reasons: a) I didn’t know about this; b) we got to hang out with them!

Griff, who’s about 1.5 months older than Cameron, was just a charmer. He was all smiles and coos and high-pitched squeals (a newfound sound…he likes it more than his mom and dad!). You can just tell he’s going to be a great little guy and it was fun getting a preview of things to come. He’s already close to rolling over, he might be teething, and he already has such a great attention span for stories!

Shortly after V. left, he fell asleep in my arms while Cameron fell asleep in the swing (what a miracle!)!

This was the first time I’ve left Cameron with someone other than Tom! I hope she was good. When I left, I think she was already finishing up her swing-nap. She didn’t get in her customary 2-hour nap walking to and from the library, so she was a little on the fussy side! But, Valentine didn’t look completely discombobulated or anything when I returned — in fact, she looked downright cheery(!) –, so I’ll take her word that Cameron wasn’t too troublesome!

Once Tom got home and I had her in the mei tai (she’s now getting much too big for the Peanut Shell), she fell fast asleep and didn’t wake up until bedtime story time (but she nursed back to sleep as she usually does…)!

It was definitely nice to have the mommy-baby time and now we’re also, hopefully, safer from swine flu!

dylan sings in Mandarin

"studying" Mandarin

We’re still taking Mandarin classes wtih Taliana and Heather and this time around, we got a nice book and a CD of songs to facilitate our learning! We popped in the CD the other day and Dylan wanted to hear the Shape Song over and over and over again. The first few times we listened, he colored the accompanying page in his book. When that was done, he was the “teacher.” He was bobbing his head in rhythm, tapping on his knee to the beat and trying to belt out the words. The real Mandarin teacher has a very Music Together-oriented approach (she is, after all, a trained MT teacher, too!), so the CD-book format works very well for Dylan. He was awesome! Hopefully, I’ll be able to post the video soon.

The storm has passed and today, Dylan got another hair cut. When he was finished, we went to The Ugly Mug for steamed soy milk and vegan scones. The yumminess of the scone as well as the presence of their fish tank inspired him to declare, “I love this place!” Then, we went to story time where we listened to bug-themed stories and made a “caterpillar” necklace. Just like last week, Dylan gave his daddy the project he made!!
