My sisters and mom hosted a little “Welcome CJ” party at my mom’s house last weekend in lieu of an actual baby shower. My mom and Christina made grilled veggies, cous, cous, a Filipino noodle dish called pancit, sandwiches, and served fruit salad, watermelon slices, and halo halo (a favorite for everyone!).

It was a blazing hot day in San Jose and we completely forgot to pack Dylan’s swimsuit for the occasion! Luckily, Auntie Christina had some sort of floaty suit that Dylan could borrow (never mind that it was pink and purple!), so we stripped him completely down and had him don the floaty suit.

Since neither Tom nor I had a swimsuit with us, Auntie Christina was awesome about taking Dylan into the pool and hanging out with him. She did some “swim practice” with him, piloted a raft train with Tyler and Dylan both on board, and did other fun pool stuff.

Dylan, of course, totally adored playing with his cousins, and we enjoyed spending the day with family!

We celebrated a couple of birthdays last weekend — Assaf’s and Ellie’s — and by some odd coincidence, both were bowling parties…on the same day! This was the first time that Tom and I ever bowled together and also Dylan’s first time at the bowling alley!

Of course, Dylan loved it, and never before have I seen bowling shoes as cute as the ones he got to wear at Bowling Party #2! It was also very, very cool because you could set up bumpers for individual bowlers on the same lane!

The lightest bowling ball available is 6 pounds, so we helped Dylan carry it over to the lane (mostly so he wouldn’t drop it on his toes!) and then he’d give it a good push…Without any assistance, it took the ball approximately 1+ minute to make it all the way down the lane!

Poor Tom, who is a fantastic bowler by report, was bowling injured — he still is nursing a sore hamstring and the steri-strips from a knife cut he got just 2 days earlier were still on his hand — and I was bowling pregnant, so neither of us had our best games. In fact, Dylan played a better game than I did!

Ellie’s bday was another awesome bowling bday party. It was at a bowling alley in San Jose which had a Back 9 room for private parties. We had 9 lanes all to ourselves, some set up with bumpers and others not. Mark and Yu-chen were also super awesome about bringing Ethiopian food for us to eat and serving a vegan birthday cake to their guests (we are forever grateful and feel so lucky to have such thoughtful friends!)!

Dylan got an awesome party favor — a Spongebob Squarepants bowling bag with a bowling set, Spongebob soccer ball, and inflatable soccer ball all stuffed inside! He has been setting up his pins in his “bowling alley”, the hallway near our dining room!

dilated and effaced

Dylan accompanied me to yet another doc appointment last Wednesday morning (the second of my now-weekly OB appointments). I was told that I was nearly 2cm dilated and 60% effaced and, heck, we may not even make it to Saturday (for Thomas the Train), but I’d promised Dylan I’d take him to the Boardwalk to watch the free circus show and we had also arranged to meet Heather and the girls there shortly after the show ended. Tom was shocked I was at the Boardwalk, but all was just fine!

Dylan and I packed snacks and ate them on the beach during the show. Afterwards, he went potty(!) and we went looking for Heather so the kids could ride some rides together. Dylan loved riding with Taliana — they took turns picking which attraction they’d do next — he even braved the Cave Train, the Dragon ride, and the noisy car ride, all in the interest (I think!) of being social (these were all rides he’d previously wanted to avoid because they were too loud!)!

It was a bit tough walking around so much, but overall, I’m glad we were able to go see the show and to have some Boardwalk time! It won’t be long before these little trips with Dylan will be a little more difficult!

It’s been a while since we posted an update to our garden and, honestly, it’s because not much has been going on back there! Actually, that’s good news. We haven’t even really had gopher or deer issues this year (the gophers are clearly back, but we planted tomatoes in individual gopher baskets this year).

We did manage to harvest a good crop of absolutely delicious potatoes! After harvesting, we cooked them up in a curry with some cauliflower and carrots and, mmmm, it was good!

We still haven’t found a good way to generate multiple harvests, but I think we got enough enjoyment out of this crop, that we’re likely to try growing them again next year.

Our tomatoes are off to a very slow start, but we’ll send an update once we start harvesting!

shades picture: heading out for a "hike"

Last Saturday, Tom went on the Berry Creek Falls trail up in Big Basin with about 50 of his PCP students. Since, it’s an 11-mile hike, Dylan and I had to opt out (but because Dylan wanted to go hiking, too, the three of us went on an itty bitty, teeny weeny hike the next day on a trail behind Harvey West Park — hence the picture!); the good thing was that we could sleep in a little.

As soon as Dylan woke up, though, the first words he uttered were, “where’s Gallagher?” I was completely confused.

Me: Who?
Dylan: Gallagher. (Pause)
Dylan: Gallagher’s my new cat….(Pause — we were both still waking up!)
Me: …you have a new cat…?
Dylan:Yeh …he’s orange…and you can’t see him…

Ahhh, so that explained it! We spent a few minutes more discussing Gallagher before Dylan hopped out of bed to go “look for him.” He finally located him on the bed and invited me to pet him (so I did) and then we headed downstairs in search of not only Gallagher but Fifi (a small pink kitty that Taliana gave to him) and Mao (a small, red, hand-me-down McDonald’s cat).

Anyway, Gallagher has become a very important character! Yesterday, Gallagher climbed to the top of the backyard where it’s not safe and Dylan had to tell him to come down! Dylan also left a bowl of sparkly water for him to drink as a means of trying to coax him down and he has been preparing all sorts of food for Gallagher in his little kitchen….

Today, Gallagher was blamed for drawing in one of Dylan’s photo books — when I asked, “who drew in here?” Dylan promptly responded, “not meeeee…I think it was Gallagher” and then he ran off to tell Gallagher that we only draw on paper and on whiteboards (“do you hear that??”).

It’s yet another thing this little fella does that just keeps us laughing…!

dylan is “stunning”

I mean, of course, we think our little guy is stunning, but it’s not just his charming smile! One day, while Dylan was playing monsters (a current favorite “game”), he started shouting, “I’m going to kill you, monster”. Of course, we didn’t like the sound of that, so I explained to him that we don’t do that to anyone. It’s not nice and that’s not a nice word. Instead, he could “stun” the monster and that meant that the monster wouldn’t be able to move and therefore couldn’t try to chase us or eat us up or anything!

Luckily, he took to the idea right away and started “stunning” monsters left and right (and also telling them that he didn’t taste good and was “too salty and sour!”). Of course, Tom is often the monster from whom Dylan is trying to save us! The other night, poor tired Tom, while laying on the bed, tried encouraging Dylan to go pee pee so we could all go to sleep. Since Dylan wanted to keep playing, he came over to Tom and said, “I’m going to stun your mouth! ‘Tun! ‘Tun! ‘Tun!” then he ran back to tell me daddy-o couldn’t talk!

At that point, I wondered if it was such a good idea to teach him the word, but it was so cute and far more preferable to the alternative that I guess I’m ok with it!

a week of no school!

Dylan’s pre-school was closed all week, so he got to spend his days with Auntie Heather and Taliana (M, T, W and F afternoons) and his cousins Jason and Tyler (Thursday)!! Tom came home early on Thursday, too, so that Cindy could leave before rush hour began….I think he had so much fun, it might be a little rocky dropping him off at school again…!

He got to splash around in Taliana’s pool, ride rides at the boardwalk, draw oodles, play doctor, etc. and, on Thursday, he fed ducks and scrambled around the playground with Jason and Tyler.

It’s been a busy and fun week (Taliana and Dylan also had a play date with Cora and Anela on Friday morning) but also a little bit of an exhausting one for all of us! Dylan napped for only 1 hour total all week, and by the end of the week, the fatigue was really beginning to catch up to him. In fact, he was tired enough even today to lay down with me on the couch and he is now peacefully napping!

He has been doing absolutely stellar with the potty…I’d say he’s pretty much completely potty trained now. It’s just a question of whether he’ll regress once the baby is born. I don’t know what kicked it off, but I have a feeling that Taliana’s new 2.5 year old foster sibling may have offered some motivation! We’ve been telling him he’s bigger and older than she is and he can teach her things that he can already do (it just so happens, his initial encounters with her coincided with Father’s Day weekend…). But regardless of what it was that kicked it off, we’re happy…and I think Dylan is also very, very proud of himself!

July 4th

Boy, it’s been a while since I’ve posted, but finally, here are a few photo highlights from this year’s 4th of July celebration. As has been the case since Dylan was born, we went to Morgan Hill to spend some time with the family — there was a barbecue and swimming at Cindy’s house and then we headed to the park to see some fireworks.

This year, we tried working on some swimming skills with Dylan (to save some bucks, I opted out of enrolling him in more formal swimming lessons). Instead, it was just us, telling him to kick, kick, kick and to “cut the pizza, spread the sauce,” a “technique” we learned from Taliana (imagine your two hands together, sticking straight out in front, chopping into the water (cutting the pizza) and then pushing the water out from the center to your sides (spreading the sauce))! He kicked around the pool with a noodle and we occasionally let him go so he could see that he could float on his own….!

After eating some corn and dinner, we all headed to the park where the kids rode in the wagon, played on the playground, climbed a tree, and saw a cute little family of ducks, complete with mommy, daddy, and 8 little ducklings!

Dylan, of course, did not nap! And, he also stayed awake for the fireworks show (which, gratefully, was not canceled as it was last year!). He covered his ears the entire time and later told us that his favorite ones were the “quiet” ones that sent down “sparkle…..”

Last night, Tom played in a students v. staff softball game down at SJSU. This meant, Dylan and I had to drive on over pretty much directly from school. When I got there to pick him up, he was dry and in the same pants, but he apparently hadn’t gone pee for quite some time! Simply informing him that it would be a good idea to pee before we drove 35 miles wasn’t sufficient motivation…and neither was some encouragement by a couple of other parents passing through on their own pick-up trips! But, finally, I picked up his potty and took it into the staff bathroom so we could “race”, and wouldn’t you know it, he went pee…and, boy, was there a LOT! I was relieved (and so was he, I’m sure!)

Once at the game, Dylan was so excited to see Tom out there on the field! I couldn’t get him out of the car fast enough. He was just chattering away, a mile a minute: “I wanna see Daddy…is he playin’? Where’s the batter? Is that softball?”

We did a bit of running with another little fella named Noah and then, right before the game started, Dylan ran over to his travel potty, shouting, “I need to go poo!”. At first I thought I heard wrong, but I could see he was desperately trying to unpack the thing, so I waddled over and helped him set it up right behind home plate! And, boom, there he went! I was so proud of him!!!

Shortly afterwards, it was Tom’s turn to bat and we watched him zing a solid line drive…but too bad it was caught!

Dylan was just an absolute sweetie during the entire game. He was cheering and clapping with the rest of the crowd and kept asking me what this person was saying and what that person was saying (mostly, it was people barking out strategies and rooting people on)…We spent a lot of time behind home plate just throwing around an extra softball (and also kicking it around like a soccer ball!).

The staff went on to win the game 6-0 (apparently, they’ve never lost a game so far!) and, afterwards, we had a nice dinner at International Vegetarian House.

Dylan didn’t want to use the potty during dinner, but afterwards, he used it before we headed home.

Unbelievably, since he was a “no-nap-nic” that day (he declared this to me at school, following it up with a little hop and an, “isn’t that funny??”) and he woke up earlier than usual, he did not fall asleep on the way home!

While we were getting him ready in the car, he talked about reading three books (Flotsam, Click Clack Splish Splash, and Sleepy Bears), and I think he stayed up just for that…Even though he was droopin’, he sang songs with me instead (very, very, very cute!). Once home, we read the 3 books we promised we’d read and then it was lights out….

3 pees in a potty

We’ve gone an entire week (and then some) wearing cotton underwear at home! It was as if Dylan just decided to flip the switch — from pull-ups to big-boy undies — overnight!

Yes, he’s had a few accidents, but overall, he’s doing so incredibly well. He is pooping in the potty at home and he even used his travel potty while we were out all last weekend — at brunch with Kazuo, at the Children’s Discovery Museum, and during dinner at Millennium in San Francisco!

At school, he’s had one accident all week and, today, he had a banner 3-pees-in-the-potty day! Overall, we’re so thrilled and hoping that the birth of little sis won’t entail too much, if any, of a setback!
