father’s day and potty use!

Here’s Tom and Dylan on Father’s Day! Dylan and I tried making a special breakfast — banana flapjacks and chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries served with some fakin’ bacon — but I’m just not as good a cook as Tom is (poor fella), so not only was the meal totally unworthy of a picture, it was also kind of mediocre. Not to fear, though. Since we spent most of the day celebrating Father’s Day with the family in the Bay Area and attention was “diffused”, we’re hoping to have a “real meal” and more focused celebration at Millennium this coming weekend! The real daddy’s day treat is still to come…!

We had a nice lunch at Sweet Tomatoes with mom and Grandpa Mike, Christina, and Cindy and Jeff and the kids, followed by some hanging out time back at Lola’s house…Dylan and Tyler just loved playing with each other, especially hide and seek!

Dylan also seems to have knack for making some solid progress on an important milestone whenever there’s an occasion…This time around, he did stellar on the potty and he’s been requesting to stay in cotton undies! He wore a cotton undie to bed on Saturday night, used the potty on Father’s Day morning and pretty much all day, including using it while we were at the restaurant (using the potty while we’re out and about is a huge deal right now).

He has continued to do extremely well these past few days. He’s even used his potty at school for the past two days in a row (another very big deal), and he took himself to go poop (pooping in the potty is another very big deal) on Monday after school.

Since Father’s Day, he’s been wearing cotton undies at night (if he wants to stay in cotton undies, he’s required to go pee before we go to sleep) and he continues to wake up completely dry in the morning. Now, he’s also being very good about going pee before we leave the house.

I’m not sure what the underlying motivating factors are in his sudden change of heart, but he clearly is now more definitely identifying as a “big boy”, even going so far as to suggest he sleep in his own room and in his own bed (he did fall asleep in the Pink Room, but he woke up around 1am looking for me and spent the rest of the night with us…).

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: hope this time the potty use sticks!!

dylan’s follow-up dentist appointment

Unfortunately, the dentist is recommending we fill the two front teeth to prevent any further decay. We’re bummed, but we also don’t want any cavities to weaken his current overall dental health! I, of course, am very sad that his two front teeth chipped in the first place! He’ll get his fillings next month and we’ll give an update on how he did (of course) when the time comes!

Back Log: At this time last year, Dylan had just moved up from the toddler room to the preschool! Time is flying…!

Dylan’s ranger badge

Here’s our little fella proudly wearing the Junior Ranger badge he got from our Pinnacles trip. And, last night, he found our washed (but not yet put away) camping dishes and set up a “campsite” right outside the kitchen where he made ice cream and Teeccino for all of us! He really is such a character. I love how he gets so into the activities and games he plays (with us and with pals)…!

This past weekend, we went camping at Pinnacles National Monument. It was warm throughout the weekend with high’s in the high 70s and low 80s and night-time lows in the mid-50’s, but we also got a teensy bit of rain (in the middle of the night and Saturday morning) and it was a bit windy as well!

Our hope was that the kids would nap in the car (we were driving with Heather and Taliana) so that they’d be nice and refreshed once we got to camp! But, both kids were so excited, they had a tough, tough time falling asleep. Luckily, Taliana finally fell asleep which finally helped Dylan and they both got in about 45 minutes and 30 minutes of rest, respectively!

Since Assaf got in so late (about 8pm), it ended up being a very late night for all of us! We quickly had a dinner of curried lentils, carrots, and corn over cous cous (luckily, Tom and I had prepared this at home and it was a simple reheat operation at the camp) and then began the long night-time routine! We skipped the ice-cream making plans for that night and ended up sleeping only around 11pm.

On Saturday, we went for a hike along the Moses Spring Trail (so-named for a little ribbon of water that was let loose from the rocks by some intrepid explorers. It reminded them of Moses parting the waters and so the name stuck).

It was short — a 2.4 mile loop — but half of it was a fairly steep and consistent uphill! Along the way, we walked through some tunnels, smelled California Buckeye flowers, learned about lichen, toyon (or winterberry), learned a bit about the geography (Pinnacles is part of the remains of a volcano), and enjoyed a snack by the reservoir.

Dylan had a meltdown on the way back — he was really tired and it was really hot, the trail was very rocky and steep in some parts — but he wanted to walk it, all the while complaining that he was tired and hot! We had to struggle to load him into the backpack carrier where Poor Tom had to listen to him shrieking for a at least a good half mile!

Once back at camp, we tried to get the kids to nap, but it was so hot in the tent! But, after some effort (lots of cold towels, the existence of a nice breeze, and a short car-ride for Dylan), they both fell asleep….

Once they awoke, we had dinner and made a coconut-milk based chocolate mint chip ice cream, thoroughly enjoyed by all!

The next morning, we really only had time for breakfast (a southwest tofu scramble with sundried tomatoes, salsa, spinach and carrots; vegan sausage; and toast) before we had to pack things up and head out!

Our last stop before leaving was the Visitor’s Center. The kids finished some activities in their junior ranger books and we thought we’d get the ranger to sign the Certificate of Achievement at the back of their books! But, much to our surprise, they got more than just the ranger’s signature! They took an oath to keep the parks clean and safe and got a nice patch and a junior ranger button. It was very sweet and Dylan was so proud of his, he wanted to wear it to school the next day!

All in all, it was another great camping experience (meltdowns aside)! And, we’re looking forward to taking the kids again next year…!

our little guy is healthy

Not long after getting home from LA, we had to rise and shine and take Dylan to his doctor’s appointment. At each visit, I explicitly ask if there are any flags or cause for concern because he’s vegan….Every time, he’s given a clean bill of health and this time was no exception. Our happy little camper is still fairly small (14% height, 11% weight), but his height and weight are proportionate, he’s developing normally, he’s in great health, and the doctor (who is not vegan) thinks he’ll live longer than the rest of us if he keeps on eating vegan (providing he takes a daily B12 supplement, which he does). The report was music to my ears….

LA birthday celebration and Auntie’s first marathon

Christina ran her first full marathon — the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll — on Sunday, May 31 so, we decided to cheer her on and couple it with a visit with family in Los Angeles….Grandma Sharon threw a totally nice and decadent birthday party for Dylan — there was sooo much good food — while we were there.

Dylan had an absolute b-l-a-s-t. He absolutely loved, loved, loved, playing with Eli and Rocky and Grandma Sharon and we enjoyed seeing family we haven’t seen since Chanukah.

The day of the celebration, he barely napped (he squeezed in a 30-minute cat-nap on the way back home from Fred and Julie’s house and the park), but he was obviously in high spirits for the entire party. He was galloping around looking for Grandma Sharon and Rocky whenever either of them left the room! And, as you can see from this picture, he was thrilled with his cake (Julie decorated it with a “muddy” Thomas the Train)!

Day 91: this does not look like the stride or the face of a tired marathon finisher!

The next morning, we woke up early to drive to San Diego to watch Auntie Christina finish in her first marathon ever. Dylan was so tired from the previous night’s celebration that he stayed asleep when we loaded him into the car at 6:30am! But, he woke up about half-way there! I was a little worried he’d be cranky, but he was very patient and when he heard we’d be riding an electric trolley, he was excited!

He was also incredibly patient as we waited for Auntie to come through the finisher’s chute…and, of course, she finally did!

We ended the weekend with lunch with Christina in San Diego’s Old Town and then dinner back in LA with Grandma Sharon, Papa Willard, Eli, Rocky, Uncle Fred and Auntie Julie.

May is a very, very busy birthday month. We celebrated Justin’s and Dylan’s birthdays a couple of weeks ago (they are 3 days apart), and the following week we celebrated Finley and Keala’s (their birthdays are a day apart and they are 4 and 5 days younger than Dylan, respectively!)!

Finley, Keala and Dylan happen to go to the same pre-school, too, so Keala was there for Finley’s celebration as well. It was wonderful to see the kids and families together over both weekends…! And, luckily, the weather was much cooler than it was the previous weekend!!

There are many more cute pictures of the kids on flickr!

Dylan’s dream

Day 72: spending the morning at Harbor Beach
Harbor Beach
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Every morning just as we wake up, Dylan usually just launches straight into conversation and/or play mode. It’s a great thing because usually he wakes up and gives a big smile! Nearly every morning, I also remember the dream(s) I had the previous night, so I often ask Dylan if he wants to hear about my dream (sometimes, he’s totally frank and says, “no”!) and after I give him a brief synopsis of mine, I ask him if he’s had any dreams, too.

The other morning, after we’d been talking for a bit, he suddenly told me he had a dream the night before. It was about a big, car boat and it was going into the harbor…and there were people on it…and it was going sloooow.

I don’t actually know if this was a dream, or just a memory. Sometimes, when we share our dreams, he takes it as an opportunity to start spinning tales based on what he’s seen…so I thought maybe, just maybe, this harbor dream of his had to do with our beach visit a couple of weeks ago where we did see a boat going into the harbor!

Regardless, I think it’s so sweet that he thought to bring up the topic (of dreams) himself ! The picture above is from the day we went to the beach and saw the boat….

This is a picture that Taliana drew at our last weekly, pre-Music Together breakfast. She drew a picture of herself and Dylan, then added her mama, Tom, me, Dylan’s baby sister (I’m second from the left with the little thing sitting on my arm), and her baba! Taliana also drew Dylan a really nice birthday card which depicted the two of them and baby sister inside of a tent, holding a lantern, and eating huckleberries — such fond camping memories from last year with a projection towards camping in the future! So, even though the baby isn’t here yet, she is already a part of our lives.

dylan’s bday circle at school

Day 82: Dylan's bday banner at preschool

There were three May 20th birthdays at Dylan’s preschool this year, so the birthday circles were celebrated from Wednesday through Friday with Dylan’s on Thursday (his full day there)! This meant, he had yet another birthday celebration! For each birthday kid, the folks at school make a nice banner with the bday celebrant’s selected theme (of course, Dylan chose a train) and then they have a special circle time featuring the child’s favorite stories and songs. It was all so incredibly sweet.

Dylan was really pretty shy during the entire thing. He definitely has favorite songs and stories, but when asked, he just took whatever suggestions were offered — a nice story about a train and a nice train song.

After the story and songs, he got a special bday card with 3 knots tied on it while a little rhyme explaining each knot was recited. Then, everyone sang happy birthday and he got to blow out a candle on one of his special bday cupcakes.

It was the first time I’d stayed for an entire circle time, and I was impressed, not only with the attention showered on the kid, but also with their “curriculum” (which included a song in Spanish) and the way in which the teachers manage the kids….
