We made it through Week 1 of having two kids! Cameron had 2 doctor’s appointments, both to follow up on her jaundice. During the first one, her bili level using the bili-meter was at 19.3. Since she was pretty yellow (and so were her eyeballs!), the doctor ordered a blood draw which resulted in a 16.9 reading. This sounds high, but for a Day 5 infant, it was not high enough to warrant any medical attention (thank goodness). We took her out into the sunshine for 10-15 minute stretches and, if she didn’t awake on her own, we woke her after 2-3 hours to make sure she nursed.

By the second appointment (her 1-week mark!), she’d gone from 7 lbs. 5 oz. to 7 lbs. 7 oz; although she was behind on her poopin’ schedule, she was peeing up a storm and had at least gained a couple of ounces…a promising sign! We’ll return to the doctor next week to check her weight gain.

Also during this first week, Auntie Heather and gals, Auntie Cindy, Auntie Christina, Lola and Grandpa Mike all came for a visit to see how both kidlets were doing. Dylan loves having visitors. For one, he has someone to play with, but also, everyone is just so awesome about lavishing him with attention!

Dylan is still a very enthusiastic and proud big brother! He’s clearly adjusting — he asks Tom for a lot more attention now and wants to be picked up a lot — but he’s still pretty chipper, as you can see here! The big issue with Dylan is that he is waking up about an hour earlier than he normally does and I think he’s been having more restless nights. On top of getting fewer hours of nighttime sleep, he’s also having trouble napping during the day! Overall, he manages to maintain a cheery disposition, but the lack of sleep does catch up to him sometimes and he begins to have trouble sharing with Taliana and P. and/or getting ready at night!

Yes! We finally had Cameron! She was born at 8:10pm on Wednesday, August 12th (a day before her cousin Tyler’s birthday!), 7 lbs. 13 oz. and 20.5 inches.

I woke up at 6am that morning with contractions about 15 minutes apart. After determining that they were continuing, I called my sisters, mom and Heather around 9am to warn them I might go into labor later in the day. As it turns out, I did!

The contractions were about 4-6 minutes apart at 10am, so I called the maternity center to see if I should come in. They informed me I was in early labor and that I should monitor contractions and call back in an hour, so Heather, the girls, Dylan, Tom and I went for a very short walk in the neighborhood during which it seemed my contractions were getting more intense. But, as soon as we got back home, the contractions spaced back out to 6 minutes apart. When I called Sutter again, they said it was common for contractions to get further apart and, if I could, I should try to make it to my 3pm appointment with my OB (this was to be the last of my appointments and the one during which we’d make plans to induce!).

Even though the contractions seemed consistently between 4-6 minutes, we all hung out at home. Cindy and Christina arrived to help take care of Dylan. He had a blast making mud pies and birthday cakes out in the backyard with Taliana and P.

As it turns out, I made it to my appointment but, by then, my contractions were about 4 minutes apart. When the doc checked me, I was 4cm dilated and 70% effaced. She advised us to check in at Sutter, across the street from her office, where they could check me again at 6pm. If I wasn’t in active labor by then, the plan was to either induce or let me go home for a few hours to labor some more.

Once checked in (by now it was about 4pm), I was determined not to labor forever, so Tom and I walked the stairs and hallway at Sutter for about an hour. By 6:30pm, I was dilated to 6cm and the nurse informed me I should get my labor support over here right away. As soon as I hung up the phone with my big sister (about 6:45pm), my water broke!

In the meantime, Heather had taken Dylan back to her house where he would spend the night (and my sisters and Heather had also cleaned our house!!). Then, Cindy, Christina and Heather arrived by 7-ish. By then things had already begun to pick up. Luckily, I got a room with a tub — the very same room in which Dylan was born! — so I rocked in the rocking chair until the tub was filled up and then I lay in the tub moaning until I felt like I just wanted to push.

The pain was pretty unbearable and I wasn’t sure if I could make it, so I asked for an epidural after just a few rounds of contractions out of the tub, but by that time, they told me that they could already see her head.

I could tell nobody was going to go get that epi! I was a little annoyed, but I also realized that if even Tom and my sisters and Heather were saying I could do it and she was almost there, it must be the case!

In the end, I pushed for only 15 minutes (the longest 15 minutes of my life)! The on-call doctor arrived just in time to tell me to give just one more “gentle” push and there she was!!

They immediately placed her on my chest while they took my vitals and her’s. She tried nursing within that first hour and was pretty successful at latching on. After about an hour, I needed to get up, so they took the opportunity to bathe her and weigh her.

We’d given the staff a heads-up on Dylan’s bili scare, so everyone was very, very attentive to her bili levels. We were elated to take her home on discharge day (Friday). She did have a bili reading of about 8+ on her chest, but it was below the “alarm” level of 12!

She is an amazingly mellow little gal — she’s slept through so much playing, cooking, talking, laughing, etc — and Dylan is The Most Amazing Big Brother Ever! He constantly wants to hold her, comfort her, kiss her, and tell her he loves her. He currently tells us that she’s “his” (as in his little sister). He’s very proud! We are also very proud of him. He’s been such a big boy, helping out with collecting laundry, picking things up for me when I drop them, etc. and, of course, he’s been so kind with Cameron.

Week 2 of maternity leave ended with Tom’s PCP summer program awards ceremony and a birthday party for another 3-year old buddy (Amirah).

This week wasn’t nearly as crazed as last week — we only could see Heather and the girls a couple of times during the week, but it was definitely more challenging for me to maneuver around, so it felt exhausting nonetheless!

Also, I’m not able to get much accomplished while Dylan is with me; he loves playing together, but even when he’s playing alone, he has a constant narrative of what he’s doing that often requires some sort of feedback on my part! Despite being unable to get much household stuff done while he’s with me, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed spending the time with him. I’m savoring these moments of just “mommy and Dylan” time, and I’ve found I can be extremely focused and productive during those hours that he’s in daycare.

In any case, we have resorted to telling our little girl that everything is ready for her: diapers have arrived, clothes are washed, co-sleeper is set up, etc! Dylan, in the meantime, is the sweetest big bro-to-be. He rubs my belly and talks to her and kisses my belly, too, asking if she can feel that. He still seems very excited to have her around, but I know it will be an adjustment for all of us! Our current morning routine involves about 20-minutes of us just sitting together and waking up. We chat and often read a story or two before getting on with breakfast and the rest of our day! I know this will change once the baby is born….

As to the picture…it was taken during the Friday evening Awards ceremony at SJSU. Dylan loved running around just outside the auditorium where we saw a statue of Olympians Tommy Smith and John Carlos, two SJSU athletes whose medals were taken away from them because they held up their fists in a show of “black power” back in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.

Dylan was completely enthralled by the sheer size of the statue. He ended up climbing up on the pedestal and posing (he tried to mimic their pose)!

Before we went outside, though, he sat through at least some of the awards. He was so tickled to see Tom up on stage!!! At this point, his impression of daddy’s work is that it’s all fun and games! He comes to my office and sees whiteboards (which he likes!), but when we go to daddy’s work, it’s always for the extra-curricular activities — casino night, softball game, awards ceremonies, etc.! Dylan has come to expect “vegan chips” (tortilla chips and salsa) whenever we go to SJSU!

dylan’s new hair cut and market day

Well, after the whole dilation and effacement scare from the previous week, everyone in the household went into “panic” mode over hair. Tom came home early that day and immediately went and got a haircut; I went and got one the next day (I donated 10″ of hair to Locks of Love) and then, finally, it was Dylan’s turn!

Dylan had actually been telling us that his hair was getting long and he needed a hair cut for at least a week — he even remembers the name of his “stylist” (!)– but it took a little time to get him scheduled in.

After his hair-cut, we went to the Farmer’s Market where he sampled peaches, nectarines and oranges (pictured here!). It was also nice that Tom was able to come home early from work, so he joined us at the market….Incidentally, Dylan is very, very helpful in picking out stone fruit! He lets me know immediately if the variety he’s sampling is good or if it’s too sour!

We often get half-flats of strawberries, so we finally decided to try a vegan strawberry shortcake. The biscuits were so dead-easy to make, we’ve made shortcake twice in the past 2 weeks, once with a vegan whipped cream and once with a custard variation (as suggested by an old grad school friend, Julia)! For Dylan, the best thing about the dessert is the strawberries and, for that, we’re very happy!

week recap (and Dylan’s first filling)

Friday marked the end of my first full week of maternity leave — and what an eventful week it’s been! We scaled back Dylan’s pre-school hours to just 1 1/2 days, so he’s been with me for most of the week.

Since my best friend Heather’s parents are also retiring in California and were moving this week, she was also extremely busy. To help each other out, we started the week by swapping a couple of hours of babysitting on Monday. I took the kids in the morning and she took them in the afternoon (so I could finish up some loose ends from work); Tuesday morning was spent with Heather while the afternoon was a half-day at pre-school (once again, I used my free time on work tasks); Wednesday was my doctor’s appointment followed by the Circus and rides with Heather and gals at the Boardwalk; Thursday I finally hung up my work hat and started anxiously preparing for impending child birth (which, of course, has not yet happened!) while Dylan spent the day at school (it was his share day and I heard he shared his guitar very well!); and Friday, oh Friday…We took Dylan to get his first tooth filling ever.

The dentist strongly recommended Dylan get the laughing gas, so we gave it a shot. He was very patient when they fitted the mask over his nose, but we could all tell he was a bit uncomfy with having it there, so they went ahead and took it off.

The dentist was very concerned that Dylan not have a negative experience there, so she explained that if she couldn’t finish the procedure without the “magic air,” she would just just try to drill out the cavity and patch it up with some extra-strength fluoride….We were also worried that Dylan wouldn’t sit through it, but wouldn’t you know? He was a total trooper!

The dentist was very good at “introducing” her tools to him — the air blower, the water squirter, the polisher, drill, etc. — and she would test out the sensation on his arms and hands before she used them in his mouth. Even with some expectation of sound and sensation, Dylan was still jumpy. Every time he heard one of the tools get fired up, he would start a little.

Luckily, though, Tom and I were able to stay with him the whole time and I could hold his hands and provide some reassurance that he was ok. He never cried or tried to squirm away although he was visibly uncomfortable at several points (they even used a tool to prop his mouth open and would periodically go in there to suck up the saliva and to blow his teeth dry again).

At one point, when they were giving him a break — the dentist would always tell him she’d count to 10 and then give him a break — he tried to get up and he asked, “am I done yet?” But when we said not yet, he obediently lay back down again.

After the drilling ended (luckily, this was brief), the doctor explained that she’d gotten all of the “bugs” out of his mouth and he responded by telling her that when he sees a bug, he says, “shoo fly, don’t bother me”! At another point, the dentist had a piece of “tape” — “kinda like floss but thicker” — between his two front teeth and he asked, “how can I eat with this tape in my mouth??” That made all of us in the room smile!

Once the filling was in, the surface of his teeth was still a bit bumpy and rough. He felt around it with his tongue and made some comment on how it felt funny, then he patiently waited while the dentist smoothed his teeth out and polished them. He was such a trooper, he got 2 balloons in addition to his normal prize.

Afterwards, we went to Coffeetopia for some steamed soy milk, attended our Music Together class with Taliana and then we all stopped briefly at our house for a bite of lunch before heading out for yet another afternoon of rides at the Boardwalk!

What a week it’s been!

I got tix so late that we were only able to get a 3pm train, a time when we would normally hope that Dylan would be napping! So, we planned to get there early enough to do the activities first and make the train ride the last thing we did….

As soon as we parked the car, we could see Thomas peeking through the trees. Dylan was soooo excited, he could barely climb into his stroller. He was “oh, oh! Oh-ing!” and babbling all sorts of things about wanting to see him. He requested to eat lunch (which we brought with us) in the dining car (we had to explain that it was just going to be passenger cars today) and he just wanted to go, go, go!

Once there, Tom immediately started Dylan on lunch so they could watch some of the other trains go by while I went to grab our tickets at the will-call window.

Afterwards, we got a map and visited the four stations required to get our cheapy reward at the end of the day.

Dylan was sooo tired, but he patiently waited for the train to depart, occupying himself by looking out the window and blowing his train whistles.

After the train ride ended, we didn’t feel right about just picking up and leaving, so we endured a very long line to take a picture with Thomas! Unfortunately, I failed to get a decent shot — first, a grandpa and grandson were blocking my way, and then, one of the kiddies from the family behind us sat right next to Dylan instead of her brother! By the time everyone had cleared the way, it was time for the next group’s turn!

Nevertheless, Dylan thoroughly enjoyed the whole day which made battling crowds, long lines, heat, etc., worth every bit of effort. He sacked out on the way home and got in just enough of a cat-nap to be happy and cheery for dinner with Heather and Assaf, the girls, and Heather’s brother and parents!

The day went all the way to 11pm — we made pesto with the basil from our garden, veggies, and bruschetta and Heather and Assaf brought fresh corn from the farmer’s market! The kids performed a parade and served us all sorts of “treats” they made in Dylan’s little kitchen…Dylan was still excited by all of the day’s events, he had a hard time winding down and kept up the chatter until I finally fell asleep! I have no idea what thoughts he ended his day with!!
