the garden in progress

Here’s a shot of our mandarin tree, which is doing much better than we ever expected it to! They’re not quite ready yet, but even in their “unripe” stage, they taste amazing! The rest of the garden is looking pretty terrible — we have lots of weeding to do yet (though we did a fair amount 2 weekends ago) and we still have to prep the beds for this year’s heirloom tomato attempts.

To date, we don’t have a good solution in place to stave off gophers and deer, though we’re strategizing when we can.

In the works for this year (in addition to the heirloom tomatoes) are some organic potatoes (thanks to a friend of our’s who tipped us off on the possibility of growing our own and split an order of seedling potatoes with us), and some strawberries and cherry tomatoes that we’re planning on planting in kid-friendly containers (so’s the kids can happily self-harvest)!

Our kaffir lime tree is just huge and is bearing tons and tons of fruit….You can see part of it just behind Tom and Dylan….The fruit is not worth eating at all — too bitter — but the zest is apparently useful in Thai cooking (as are the leaves, of course). My mom had the great idea of selling some lime leaves online. I was skeptical at first, but after seeing what they sell for, Tom and I decided to publish a trial listing on eBay and, lo and behold, we sold some! Our tree won’t make us rich, but making a few bucks off a tree just thriving in our backyard is kind of cool…!

Day 9: enjoying daylight in the evening!

Since the time change, Dylan and I have been going out into the garden every evening to do a little weeding (me) and a little water play and bubble-blowing (Dylan). We’ll post progress of the garden as it progresses…!

Last weekend, Mark, Yu-chen and Ellie came over for a visit and, lucky for us, the drizzly morning turned into a gorgeous afternoon! After brunch at Zachary’s downtown, we headed for a walk along West Cliff.

Ellie did such a good job, Dylan sacked out!

Both kids thoroughly enjoyed watching the surfers and the waves. As you can see, Dylan eventually got pretty tired. Ellie wanted to push his stroller, and she did such a good job of it, Dylan actually fell asleep! Incidentally, Dylan’s been toting that little baby Elmo around everywhere! He takes him to school, reads stories to him, pats his back to put him to sleep, shares his food and drink with him, makes magna tiles chairs for him to sit on, and long train tracks for him to play with (Tom or I have to make little Elmo’s fuzzy arms push trains along tracks!), and all sorts of things…! Thanks, Grandma Sharon, he’s lovin’ it!!

We had a very busy weekend this past weekend — two birthday celebrations for friends with younger siblings who just turned 1 — and we saw Taliana both days (after the parties), AND Dylan got his hair cut.

With Taliana, they wore butterfly wings, rode “trains”, and did a whole lot of running around with their running medals on…! The kids are playing together so well these days, we’re able to get through at least 1 lengthy game each time we get together!

I didn’t want too much time to pass before posting another little update on little Dylan (who is now declaring daily that he’s a “big booooy”)…! He started wearing undies — we just swapped out his cloth diapers for some cotton training pants from Tiny Tots! And he really likes them, so much, in fact, that he didn’t want to wear anything but undies to bed tonight (so, we put down a waterproof covering on the bed, doubled the undies up, and wrapped a diaper shell around him!).

He wakes up dry, probably 9 times out of 10, so we’re hopeful he’ll make it until morning…and then, hopefully, he won’t delay peeing (as he sometimes does when he’s too cold) until it’s too late!

He’s been making great strides in just the past couple of days. On Wednesday (our library day), about 5 minutes from the library, he told me he needed to go pee (so I asked him to wait, to which he responded, “I am waiting, mommy”!) and as soon as we got there, we whipped out his potty and there he went!

At school, the teachers have also told me that he’s now telling them when he needs to pee and he’s coming home in the same pull-up we sent him in!

The other day, he also put himself on his potty to go poo…twice!

We’re, of course, thrilled and hopeful that the end of diapers may soon be near. And, we’re very proud of our little guy. He just continues to make us smile every day!

It’s tough to see, but within the confines of Dylan’s magnet tiles building, is a potty (and a few random “action figures”).

This past week has been an eventful one. Among many other things, Dylan experienced his first power outage where he was actually awake and aware of it happening. At first, he really didn’t like it and kept saying, “it’s too daaark…turn on the lights,” but once we got into the whole, “it’s just like camping” thing (we used our camp lantern), he got comfortable enough to play just as if it were any other evening at home (can’t even tell he’s playing by lantern light in this picture!)!

Aside from that, he’s been making huge gains recently with his own potty! He’s even using it at least once while he’s in daycare — he says pooping is “tricky” and still mostly wants a diaper for this, especially at school. He did poop in his potty on his own initiative just last week, though. And, he’s now using it pretty reliably in the mornings and before bedtime. We don’t always catch the first pee in the morning because he’s often too cold to want to sit on the potty, but he’s been really good about using it before we leave the house.

Ok. This time, we really do hope it sticks. I hope I didn’t just bad juju everything by mentioning it here!!

Holy smokes. It’s been eons since I’ve updated, but it’s not really for lack of news — I won’t bore you with the details.

We made it to Tahoe in late January — Dylan’s first real “memorable” trip to the snow. He loved it, except for when his little hands got so chilly because he didn’t like wearing mittens!

He was so obsessed with scooping snow with sand toys, he ignored sledding for hours. When he finally tried it, I missed the photo op. =(

Anyway, it was a 4-night trip with Mark,Yu-chen and Ellie, and Heather, Assaf and Taliana involving a few trips out snowshoeing (Dylan had his own and was able to successfully walk around in them the second time out in them) and a lot of luck with the weather (we arrived to rain, got 2 good days of snow, and left in clear weather with no need for chains on the I-80).

Tom even got a chance to ski…!

This is one of my favorite pictures from the trip, taken on a brief snowshoe excursion to the lake from within Sugar Pine Point State Park. Aren’t those faces so sweet??

One of Dylan’s favorite “games” right now is “Go Away Monster!” He plays the board game (thanks Uncle David!!) AND he plays it with Tom and me. Tom is usually the monster and they make that face in the picture. As soon as Tom gets too close, Dylan shouts, “go away monster!” and back slinks Tom into the monster pit. At other times, he chases one of us around the house, holding one of the monster pieces from his board game, or vice-versa.

It is such a fave, we’ve been playing it every day since he opened his game! As a side-effect, his throwing/aiming skills are getting pretty good (for the board game, you’re supposed to throw monster tokens into the pit–he ends up throwing them as far across the room as he can manage!)…!

He comes by and asks, “are you ok? mommy?” and has even given me some of his favorite trains to play with to make me feel better. Last night, when I came up to the room to put him to bed, he said, “I have a hug for you”! It really does warm one’s heart!

Look at that face? Isn’t it sweet?

trees and trains

We finally got around to decorating our tree (3 days after we got it from the tree farm!)! Dylan loved seeing the lights and he was eager to hang his two special ornaments (King Tut and a choo choo train), but after these two were up, he only had eyes for the train.

Here’s Dylan with his chubby little legs, standing next to the “completed tree.” Our morning routine now involves a regular (and protracted) visit with the tree and the train!

exercising with Dylan

Dylan’s been watching me do “hiccups” (really push ups). Missed the beginning while trying to turn the camera on, but you get the picture! Admittedly, it’s a little embarrassing hearing him mimic my breathlessness! Also, for the record, I did more than 11!!!!
