Day 55: inspired by Anela, Dylan rode his scooter faster than he ever has!

On Friday, we made special play date plans with Cora, Anela and their mommy. We discovered a cute, little new-to-us park and, after seeing 5-year old Anela zipping around on her scooter, Dylan was inspired to speed off on his own…(as soon as we got home from school that day, he wanted to go outside to scoot around)!

That day was the first day that he really used his scooter outside, mostly because, up until last weekend, we didn’t have a helmet for him. Now, all he wants to do is scoot. We even had to take it to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday. I’m sure it is very motivating that Taliana has a scooter, too…and he got along really well with both Cora and Anela (who are as sweet as can be)! He really wants to scoot around with them!

Dylan also got his new Keens. The velcro on his old pair kept coming open, causing him to fall a lot or lose his shoe, so now that we don’t have to worry about him tripping over a shoe, we feel far more comfy with him scooting around outside…!

dylan’s movie “theodore” experience

Day 56: Dylan, all wet from playing with water
Dylan today
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Yesterday, we took Dylan to see the movie “Earth” at the Del Mar downtown. It was his first time seeing a movie in a theater and he was totally excited! Once we were inside, he kept on asking, “is this the movie theodore?” (as in, his teddy bear!!), and he ate an absolute TON of popcorn (I could not believe just how much popcorn he was puttin’ away!)! He thought the scene with the exotic birds was hilarious and he just couldn’t stop laughing…! But, after about an hour, he started getting a little restless, so we stepped out for a potty break…and more popcorn!!

Once we got back to the house, Taliana and Dylan had fun playing with the water table, riding his scooter and trike, and eating strawberries….

Overall, it was so fun to be in a theater again (it’s been a while since Tom and I have seen a movie!). I’m looking forward to taking Dylan to the movies again…!

Back Log: At this time last year, Dylan was having fun with Auntie Cindy and Lola feeding ducks while I was at the office….

our day off

It seems like most preschools around here took an entire week off for Spring Break last week, but Dylan’s school only closed for a day. As far as our work schedules were concerned, this was very good! I only had to take PTO on Monday and Tom could “happily” work throughout the entire week….

In any case, Dylan and I took the opportunity to take a little day trip to the newly remodeled MY Museum over in Monterey.

I’d been expecting we’d spend a couple of hours there, then we’d grab lunch, and then Dylan would sack out on the drive home, leaving me some afternoon time to do laundry, some light house cleaning, etc….

But, Dylan just loved the Victorian Playhouse and the Build-a-House exhibits! While we were there, he totally made them his. At the Build-a-House exhibit, he put up canvas walls and doors and invited people inside (this was actually after much discussion–he initially didn’t want to let anyone in, but once I told him we’d have to leave if he didn’t take turns and share, he was hunting kids down to get them in!). In the Victorian House, he made soups, cupcakes, and smoothies for most folks meandering in….

I eventually had to persuade him to come out to eat, but he only agreed when I said that we could see if we wanted to come back after lunch….And he did! So, I kept my promise and we went back after finishing our overpriced lunch at this little veg-friendly restaurant called Tillie Gort’s.

Once we got back, Dylan did other things like golf, exploring the treehouse, and fielding calls from the ambulance. But really, it was all about playing in those two houses! In all, we ended up staying there for a whopping 6 hours! And, of course, Dylan did not rest until he passed out in his carseat on the way home! All in all, it was tiring, but very fun.

Easter

Day 43: cousins at easter
Dylan and Tyler
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Like the seder, Easter was another food-full event! But before heading to Cindy’s house for brunch and a little egg hunt for the kids, Dylan discovered the Easter Bunny left a little basket for him right outside our door!

Once at Cindy’s, we dined on leftover charoset, scones and cashew cream, and Tom’s famous tofu scramble before watching the kids do their frenetic egg-hunting outside on Cindy’s lawn (pictures are here or on flickr)!

Dylan was already so flush with goodies (from the morning’s Easter basket find), he was actually rejecting eggs he saw based solely on their shade of pink! What luxury!

In any case, it turned out to be a much later evening than we had expected — we got home only around 10 or 11pm — but, as always, Dylan had a blast, even sans nap!

Back Log: On this day last year, Tom and I had run the Santa Cruz Half Marathon while Dylan showed us his Dr. Evil face! and here’s a post from last Easter.

Day 42: finally! Our group shot

Ok, this year’s menu had many repeats, but part of the fun of having “an occasion” is trying out some new stuff, too, so we added in Apple and Date Mousse and Matzah Toffee. The rest of the menu remained the same as last year:
Lemon-Coconut-Almond Haroset, Turkish Eggplant Stew, and Vegan Matzoh Ball Soup. We also had traditional charoset that Heather and Assaf made from Taliana’s seder book and a yummy carrot dish they brought as well.

Dylan still has little patience for sitting through the service, so Taliana read the four questions to us (she did an awesome job!) and she joyfully participated in the search for the afikomen.

Maybe next year Dylan will participate more!!!!! At least he really, really likes charoset, matzoh and matzoh ball soup!

Back Log: We hosted our first and second seders…!

finally…a mellow weekend!

Dylan’s lantern
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Well, as weekends go, this one has been a relatively calm and relaxing one with absolutely no social events whatsoever! It was actually nice (dare I say a luxury??) to be able to just do things around the house….Yes, poor Tom had to wake up at the crack of dawn on Saturday for a SJSU event, but lucky Dylan and me got to sleep in a little. I had intended to take Dylan to the farmer’s market before meeting up with Tom in SJ, but Dylan slept until 9:15am!!!

We did meet Tom for lunch (at the International Vegetarian House) which we followed with a train ride (parked the car at the Cottle Light Rail station) to the Children’s Discovery Museum where Dylan really enjoyed playing in the Tree House exhibit.

It turned out to be a no-nap day because his eyes sprung open as soon as we got home, but that was fine since we were just hanging out at home. We had a simple dinner of roasted asparagus and polenta with diced tomatoes and then just called it a night (for Dylan–Tom and I ended up catching up on “Lost”!).

Today has been equally mellow (though oddly, still tiring!). We made some scones this morning and, Dylan and I did some weeding and watering before we all picked up and went on some errands.

It’s another no nap day, but maybe Dylan will sleep early (yeah right!)….!

Back Log: At this time last year, Dylan was perfecting his chillaxing over at Lola’s house…!

Day 34: face painting from school

The teachers at Dylan’s preschool often paint the kids’ faces in the afternoon….This was the “artistry” on Dylan’s face when I picked him up from school yesterday. He was very proud….He can be such a ham!

monkey muffin

I always think of something to write about while I’m away from the computer, but of course, by the time 2am rolls around, those thoughts are all jumbled and gone!

I just wanted to post a more recent picture of Dylan since, even from our perspective, this little guy seems to be growing like crazy. Sure, he’s still smaller (at about 32″ tall and 28 pounds, he’s leaner and a little shorter) than most of his peers, but, taken on his own, he’s just getting bigger and bigger….As evidence, his monkey muffin shirt is already beginning to ride up on his belly…and I only bought this last year!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We’ve actually been doing a lot lately. Last weekend, we went to the beach with Hailey (and Amy and baby Molly), had dinner at Cindy’s house, celebrated Hailey’s 3rd birthday, visited the Boardwalk with Taliana, AND went to a pre-college program event over at SJSU.

Dylan had a great time doing everything! We’re discovering that he’s remarkably gracious about sharing, etc., with kids he knows and likes and considers friends (like Hailey), and definitely less so with strangers. He also now refers to Taliana as his “best friend” and talks about seeing her and kissing her nearly every day!

Dylan also still digs the running–he’s super fast! At SJSU’s casino night, Dylan ran up and down and all over the building…at top speed! I definitely got my exercise in for the day!!!

You can now access these, and all the rest of our pictures, from the new Photos page!

Back Log: 2 years ago today, we noted Dylan started clapping his hands! Crazy….

Dylan visits the Boardwalk

Even though the Boardwalk is right here in town, we’ve actually given it little attention (except to go see the Chinese Acrobats last year, etc.), but Heather and Taliana bought Dylan a season pass for his bday (early gift), so we decided to make use of it this past weekend.

Dylan’s been on rides at Bonfante and at Happy Hollow and, of course, Disneyland (!!!!), but this was his first time riding the rides on the Boardwalk. We thought we’d start with something mellow, like the carousel, but that turned out to be a mistake!

For some reason, Dylan didn’t like it (actually, we found out later that he didn’t like the clown in there and he thought it was much too loud) and that kind of got him off on the wrong foot.

After that, he wasn’t in much of a mood to try any rides, even though Taliana was being soo nice to him, asking him which rides he wanted to try and reassuring him that x, y, or z wasn’t scary, loud, or fast!

Thinking that a little snack is almost always a sure way to perk up our little fella, we got some kettle corn…but even THAT didn’t work! He barely ate any! And, he continued to refuse riding just about everything.

Finally, we persuaded him to try the Cave train, which he liked well enough….After that, he was willing to ride the boats (pictured here), but he wasn’t quite ready to reveal that he was having fun doing so! Every time he passed us, he’d try not to smile as we waved at him and Taliana!

Once he’d gotten his feet wet, so to speak, he was ready to ride Convoy (this Pepsi-branded ride) and the Cave train all over again. After that, we pretty much had to wrap it up as it began to sprinkle…we got back to the car just as the rain really started to come down…! Glad we have the season pass, though! Once we were in the car, Dylan couldn’t stop talking about the few rides he did take! Hopefully, next time he’ll have more fun….
