Today was oodles of fun for little D. We met Auntie Cindy, et al at Dennis the Menace Park in Monterey for a picnic lunch and some really fun playground time with Jason and Tyler.

And, as if that weren’t enough fun already, we headed to MY Museum right afterwards! Dylan loved the magic paint board, but he also liked the moon sand table, the magnet table, and the toddler room.

Today’s day trip was a great way to wrap up the long weekend! The rest of the photo highlights are here.

As soon as we got the goodies home, we cleaned them off and tested them out. Dylan really likes his new tools and his new workbench!

Between the new toys and the mint plants — picking at them, smelling them, and sampling them — Dylan was busy!

So, Tom had a chance to stake up the tomato plants and check on our steadily growing corn.

Deer have grazed heavily on our strawberries and tomatoes, and the gophers have eaten up all of the snap peas and kale, our chamomile and freesia, but I’m happy to report that the basil is doing well!

Anyway, we are all three recovering from/fighting off some virus or another, so it was nice to have a relatively mellow Saturday….

give me a sign!

awwww
Originally uploaded by ieanna.

Dylan is still in sign-acquisition mode. Today, he signed “monkey” (very cute! He even tries to make the sound), and yesterday, he signed “elephant”. He also signed “mouse” and tried signing “fish” while reading his favorite book, Click, Clack, Splish, Splash (he seriously loves this book…!)

It seems he signed at least a couple more new words, but I’m beginning to lose track!!

The day started relatively early with a BBQ lunch at Cindy’s house, some swimming, and a game of charades (of course, Tom just rocked!).

Here we all are at some park near Cindy’s house, waiting for it to get dark and for the fireworks show to commence!

There was much pre-show playing and snacking. As you can see here, the kids had fun with their glow-in-the-dark bracelets…Dylan included! He even used his to illuminate his cup of Teddy Puffs!

Dylan is just adored by all (in this picture, he’s with my cousin’s eldest daughter Zoe), so of course he wanted to stay awake!

You can only imagine how tired little Dylan must have been by the time the fireworks began!

finally sacked out!

He managed to stay awake for the first 10 minutes of the show — he loved it, by the way. The show began with a few teasers set off a few minutes apart from one another, and when Dylan saw the lights in the sky, he just started squeaking and clapping his little hands! But, despite his valiant efforts to ward off sleep, he finally succumbed!

There are lots of good pictures to be seen, especially since Christina was the one behind the camera while Dylan kept my hands full! Ieanna posted a nice album, too.

Dylan’s daycare is closed alllll week in celebration of the 4th, so we joined Heather, Taliana and Heather’s mom and dad, who are visiting from Ohio, for a train ride at Roaring Camp Railroads.

Dylan woke up at 6am when I got up to shower, and he fell asleep about an hour before H. arrived to get us, so he was a bit on the sedate side for the first half of the ride; he was ready to play during the second half!

By the time, the ride ended, he was really reeady to go! He played with Taliana, checked out the haystacks, ate a lot of cherries and hummus, and he signed “duck” (!) as we were leaving! Well, really, it looked a little like his sign for “pig”, being near the mouth and all, but he was definitely looking at the ducks! We gave him props for being close!

Later in the evening, he signed “all done” and “hot” (saw John, our neighbor’s son, sitting out near his fire pit).

Oh, as for this post’s title, those cute little shoes are his relatively new soft-sole shoes we got as one of his bday presents from Grandma Sharon and Papa Willard.

He loves ’em…and, an interesting factoid about them: the soles are made out of the same material used for climbing gear and search and rescue dog booties!

Heck, that just means their durable…! Dylan has worn these on hot sand, hot asphalt, on dirt (pictured here) and he’s clearly comfy in them. Unlike his sandals, he doesn’t really try to tear these off his feet. In fact, today, he was trying to put them on!

He says thanks and sends his love!!

hot dog!

Dylan seems to be in a mini-language-explosion phase right now. Today, he clearly signed “more,” “bear,” and “sleepy”. In the past few days, he’s acquired about 6 new signs! His total vocab so far includes all of the above plus:

  • hat
  • dog (featured above)
  • music
  • hello/goodbye
  • light
  • fan
  • hooray!
  • uh oh
  • noooooo

. “Nooo” is still #1 in the rankings…!

Yep, Taliana, Heather, Dylan and I headed to Happy Hollow for a short excursion. This wasn’t Dylan’s first visit, but it was his first time to get on the rides!

He rode both carousels — the one with horsies and the one with sea critters — the Danny the Dragon train ride and the Granny Bug ride!

He had a blast, especially since Auntie Cindy, Jason and Tyler also met us there (surprise for him!) and we got to check out the animals on the zoo side of the park.

After we got home, we met up with Tom, and all three of us headed downtown — they headed for caffeine for Tom while I went in for a brief meeting at work. Then, we headed to dinner where Dylan just, literally, ran circles around me!

He fell asleep early tonight, but hopefully, he’ll sleep right on through until morning….

Back Log: On this day last year, Dylan was only 40 days old and his eyes were still blue (read post)!

Our little guy is definitely getting bigger! Last night while we were reading some books, he surprised us by signing “pig,” “cow” and maybe even “bunny”!! He has also been signing “music”, and this morning at Mothersong, one of the moms thought he signed “sleep”. I’ll try to take video clips of his signs. It’s really adorable to see the baby versions of what we’re doing!

Anyway, he’s definitely more communicative now. Not only is he building his signing vocabulary, he also points things out a lot more and tries to imitate sounds we make (mostly animal sounds, but still…!).

For the past 3 weeks or so, he’s also been hard at work trying to learn how to eat with utensils — he’s reasonably good at getting spoons into his mouth, but getting food onto the spoon or his baby fork are still proving to be challenging. And, he’s doing a lot of “vacuuming” and self-grooming (he loves to try combing/brushing his hair after bath time).

The other night, he watched Tom use a stud finder (just a powerful magnet encased in plastic), then he took a turn moving it along the wall until the magnet stuck to a nail.

Dylan is also really eager to take off on his own these days and even goes so far as to push our hands away when we try to walk with him!

Time is flying.

another beachin’ day

Today was another full Dylan day. We started out with a pancake brekky (thanks dad!) then headed to HAT’s for a collective trip to the Farmer’s market where we sampled (and got) some delicious Rainier cherries, some broccoli and some roasted corn. Afterwards, Cindy brought all of the boys to Santa Cruz for a visit, so we ate lunch at the Corner Cafe while Tom had another follow-up appointment for his eye. We then headed to Seabright Beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun.

After getting all tuckered out, we headed home for some Thai food and more hanging out time.

Dylan loved visiting with everyone (as usual) and stayed chipper until his postponed bedtime (9:45pm) at which time he promptly fell asleep! Hopefully, he’ll be good to go for tomorrow’s brunch with Uncle David and Taliana (hopefully, Tom and I will be, too!)….
