Big thunder mountain railroad

August 31, 2014 at 05:00AM

This was Cameron’s first time riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and she loved it! Several weeks later, she is claiming that this is her current Disneyland fave. That works for Dylan, too-it’s his favorite, too!

The big kids also rode Matterhorn (twice(!), thanks to parent swap pass!)! No Space Mountain this time around!

So, in addition to riding Matterhorn for the first time–and sticking to the general idea of trying at least 1 new ride each time we visit — the kids also rode Autopia.

The crowds this time around were definitely manageable, although the heat was still pretty intense (80s).

Chloe liked Dumbo, Storybook Land, Autopia, the carousel, Small World, and the circus train — and didn’t like Pirates, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Snow White–basically, she was not into any of the dark rides.

Poor thing, in Pirates, she was actually shaking and covering her ears and repeating that she wanted to ride something else. I felt so bad for taking her on there, especially since I already suspected she’d hate it — the desire to stick together as a family won out this time. After that experience, though, I told Tom I’d just take her on the kiddie rides while they rode the “scary, dark” rides!

Anyway, we spent 2 days in Disneyland this time around–the day before the half-marathon and the day of the half-marathon. Chloe still asks, pretty frequently, if we can go back. And, she’s got her ride agenda already set: we’re going to ride elephants, horsies, small world and boats! Cars are ok, too.

Camping, 08/12 – 08/15

This year, we were only able to manage one camping trip, but it was a fun one! This time, we came prepared with bikes (unlike last year when poor Dylan basically chased all the bikers on foot!)! Plus, we brought our dutch oven and had a “fancy shmancy-sounding” dish, risotto, for dinner!

The one unfortunate thing is that Tom was extraordinarily busy so I did 95% of the gathering of stuff for the trip on my own. This meant, of course, that I forgot things…like plates(!) and candles for Cameron’s bday chocolate loaf. I also forgot dish soap and handwashing soap!

However, I did remember to buy a couple of new chairs for the kids! These ones were swanky director’s chairs with side tables.

Anyway, we spent the first night doing set up. We set up the tent in record time and even managed to serve dinner in a timely fashion. For Cameron’s bday dessert, we did special s’mores with peanut butter cups and/or rice milk chocolate with crispy stuff (like Nestle Crunch bars).

Cameron was a great sport about spending her special day at camp. I’m not actually sure how avid a camper she is. She is not yet riding her pedal bike, so she and Chloe were campsite-bound and Cameron, of course, is a total fashionista (yikes), so she was not so keen on having to wear the same thing over and over and with no option for one of her favorite dresses to boot! The only reason I knew she was not as enthused as Dylan was her frequent inquiries as to when we were going home! Chloe and Dylan, on the other hand, seemed pretty content.

We did the hike to the Pioneer Tree on Day 2; the following day, the kids, Heather, Assaf and Tom did the Cross Marin bike trail all the way to the park’s boundary (I stayed with the girls — we walked to the campfire center and then played games in the tent).

Tom and I got some running in…and Heather and I did the Cross Marin bike trail together as well.

It was a fun camping trip–a good length of time (3 nights)…but I was ready for a shower when we got home!

Beautiful trail run at Samuel P. Taylor state park

August 16, 2014 at 01:45AM

Snuck away for a morning run before the kids woke up. I loved being unplugged and completely undistracted…by the internet, by the mess in our house, by work, etc…. One of my favorite things about camping is not having to worry about anything but everyday life–you wake up, get breakfast on the table, clean up after yourself (else the animals will relentlessly hound you at your campsite), relax and enjoy nature and your kids, eat lunch, clean up, eat dinner, clean up, and then bed time with stories of Cameron’s birth and the days following….There is only time for your family…and a beautiful run that allows you to focus on all that is good. It’s bliss, except for the lack of showering part!
