happy bday, sweetie pie!

August 12, 2014 at 01:22AM

As it turns out, doing a 10-mile treadmill run at the gym when you’ve forgotten your headphones and you’re starting at 11pm at night is just as every bit as miserable as you might imagine!

On the upside, I did have time to reflect on the very meaningful day into which my run segued…on 8/12/2009, at this hour, I was happily sleeping only to be awakened at about 6am with some contractions. 12 hours later, my dear li’l gal Cameron was born. She was so quiet when she was born (I, on the other hand, was anything but quiet), but boy did she find her voice!

When she’s moving, she’s dancing or practicing handstands or tricks on monkey bars; when she’s sitting, she’s building with Legos or thumbing through a book (and, ok, she’s trying to style her’s or someone else’s hair!). She’s my spirited and sensitive big girl and I’m looking forward to everything she has to teach me about the world and her take on it. Happy bday sweet thang, you mean the world to us!

Today was a milestone day: last birthday circle ever for Cameron at preschool…and it was her very last day. We’re on to a few more fun adventures before the trauma of school begins! In the meantime, we will continue to celebrate this very special and amazing girl!

another preschool graduate!

It’s hard to believe Cameron’s time at preschool is already up! The ceremony was similar to Dylan’s–the kids read and sang their poetry, sang “Make New Friends, but Keep the Old” and placed wish candles on their classmate’s graduation brownies.

Although Cameron has missed a giant chunk of practice time (since they practice in the morning and she’s been at dance camp all summer), she performed her poems and songs flawlessly! And, I recognized a few lines that even Chloe had been saying to me at night (“close your eyes, do not peek”)!

This was another amazingly sweet bunch of kids. Of course, Jada is her best pal, but the love is mutual between her and Owen and Mattias as well!

I had few opportunities to take pictures as I was yapping away with parents, but afterwards, I stayed with the kids at the park and Dylan rode around for hours (he’s bike-obsessed these days!) and Cameron and Chloe alternated between the play structure and trying their own bikes. It was a good day, never mind that I didn’t get any work done!

Dylan has been enjoying biking so much, I’ve been so excited to try new trails with him. This past Wednesday, after picking him up from Kayak camp (which he has been thoroughly loving!), we took the bikes to nearby Arana Gulch where the trails are mostly flat. He’s getting to be quite a strong and fearless biker!

I feel my bike frame is a little on the small side and, as a result, it feels like too much of my weight is going over my handlebars. This makes me a little wary of going down any hill very fast! So it was at Arana Gulch.

There is a point in the trail where it narrows and heads downhill. The hill is not terribly steep or long, but it was enough to make me a little anxious about Dylan and about me going over my handlebars (which I have done before!). Dylan just blazed down at full speed, managing to stay on the trail and take the corner up ahead with no problem! I, on the other hand, started realizing that if he keeps this up, I’ll have to find someone else with whom he can do more serious trail riding! Or, I guess, I’ll just have to keep on putting on a brave face–the things we do for our kids!

Anyway, it was fantastic fun.

He spent the following day with T. and K. but I met them at around 4pm so we could take a quick bike ride all together before Dylan and I picked up the girls.

What with Kayak camp and biking, he’s had a very active week…!

Cameron’s hair appointment – 7/26

cameron’s hair cut day

Well, we finally convinced Cameron to get her hair trimmed! She’s been wanting it to grow long and was not really eager to get it cut. But, I told her that if we trimmed the split ends, it would grow faster. Since, she got locked out of swim lessons this session due to a semi-private lesson coordination/scheduling fiasco (poor thing), we went and got our hair trimmed together while Dylan was at the pool with Chloe and Tom.

She ended up really liking the experience. The next day, she said she wanted to get her hair cut…again!

Chloe finds a loophole

Chloe picked up a Mamba (candy) that I told her she couldn’t eat until later…Here she is trying to avoid the nagging mommy….

Now, here she is exploiting the loophole! I love how she tries to distract me with other things in both videos. Then, she finally realizes she isn’t going to win this battle and surrenders. Love this little gal…!

our DIY bike camp and Cameron’s kitty camp

Well, last week, we ran into a little bit of bad luck with the cobbling together of summer camps–Dylan’s pump track camp was canceled! Granted it was only going to be on MWF, but we scheduled a Tuesday boogie board afternoon in there so I didn’t think I’d fall behind in work.

Once we got word that camp was canceled, I thought I’d still be able to squeeze some work hours in during the day. Little did I know that Dylan would be a complete biking fiend that week (and in a good way)! I was so stoked on his enthusiasm, I tried my best to shelve my anxiety about work.

On Monday, we started with the familiar: biking the track up above the playground at Blue Ball Park. He was doing so well, I thought we might try the tiniest of trail riding by coasting down a small hill. He wouldn’t have any of it!

Here we are at Blue Ball:

Still, he had so much fun riding, he wanted to continue even after we picked up Cameron from her Hello Kitty dance camp (incidentally, the poor dear was feeling a bit under the weather, so I planned to keep her home with us instead of taking her to school). So, I hooked up the AfterBurner Trailer Bike, she climbed on and the three of us headed to the school.

A bit later, Tom picked up Chloe and they joined us, too. Chloe tried her balance bike for a bit and Cameron did attempt her pedal bike, but both girls are still a bit reluctant to ride their bikes.

On Wednesday, we attempted the Pump Track (where his camp would have been). And, it was tough! So, rather than have a disheartening day at the pump track, I suggested we ride out to Natural Bridges and Seymour Marine Center. There are some very easy trails around Seymour that I felt he could tackle and he loved them!

rehydrating

We took the trolley to the Boardwalk with the girls after biking:

It was hot, hot, hot (82F!)! I told them we’d head home when it started to get cold, but it never cooled down! We ended up leaving only at about 6pm. I was beat by the end of the day. The kids were, too, but they were total troopers! As usual, I got some great assistance with Chloe from Dylan and Cameron–they helped her up and down the trolley steps while I got help with the stroller from the driver!

On Thursday, Dylan and I continued our bike camp. We went to Simpkins to preview the 7-8 year-olds SuperKids Tri bike course. Again, he just loved riding the trails! Since he tore his frenulum going down a hill in Nisene a couple of years back, I was a bit worried about the slope heading down towards the Lagoon. I told him he could stop and walk the bike down if he got to a point of anxiety, but he just cruised on down! When I asked how he felt about the hill, he said “it felt good, actually”!

Here we are just after the slope, admiring the view of the lagoon. Twin Lakes beach is on the other side of it!

We ended up looping and looping this trail — he just loved it, as did I!

Dylan and Tom finally got a ride in on Friday morning (before Tom and I switched off “camp” duties), but Dylan still wanted to ride in the PM! Since we were picking up K. from camp, we rode Harvey West’s limited and extremely skinny trails. I was so impressed at how well Dylan handled his bike. At several points, I thought he’d just roll down into the grass, but he stayed right on track! He was also powering up hills I thought he might struggle with–I really think that several hours of riding a day made a big difference, in both his confidence and his strength and skills!

So, Tuesday we didn’t bike. It was boogie board day! He got a wetsuit to wear, but he was still cold in the water! Also, he got pounded by a wave, but luckily, that didn’t stop him from going back in (I worked from the nearby coffeehouse so I could stop by and check him out). This was not his favorite activity, but I’m so glad he tried it out!

And, in the meanwhile, Cameron did her 4-day Hello Kitty-themed dance camp:

Summer is quickly coming to an end!! Next week, Cameron does a 4-day Dr. Seuss dance camp and Dylan will do Kayak camp! After that, it’s just a couple of short weeks to the start of school!

Ellie’s 8th bday at Chuck E. Cheese

cashing in tix for … this??!?
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Ellie’s party was at Chuck E. Cheese this year. Prior to last Saturday, I had some pretty bad memories of Chuck E. Cheese–dark, overstimulating, bad pizza, grubby…very much like a casino for kids. Ellie’s party rehabilitated my view of the place somewhat.

I think when your kids have fun, your perspective on stuff you’ve previously despised just changes! And, I guess location matters. The CEC I’d been to previously was in East Side San Jose, not such a great ‘hood as compared with this one, located in Cupertino, home to Apple headquarters and a bunch of nouveau riche!

Anyway, the kids did have fun playing arcade games for tickets and then cashing them in for junk at the prize counter! Cameron claimed 2 “lovely” fake hair extensions; Chloe picked up Smarties and a cheap plastic twisty straw that she (gratefully) broke immediately (she’d been swiping it all over the floor before she bent it too much); and Dylan got a straw and a paper “fortune teller”.

It looked so much better in the window, all pre-folded and whatnot. Dylan actually did look slightly taken aback, for a nano-second, anyway, when the grumpus behind the counter just slapped down a flat piece of paper! After I helped him fold it, he was back to joyous.

It was nice visiting with Ellie, Mark and Yu-Chen! Then, afterwards, we spent a huge wad of money buying new pants (for me) and new shoes (for the big kids) at REI before heading to Zeni’s for some yummy Ethiopian food. I just love watching the kids mack down on lentil-filled sambussas and injera with split peas (Cameron’s favorite) and collard greens (Dylan’s favorite). Chloe also likes those, but we’ve clearly not eaten enough Ethiopian food with her!
