Right before we left for LA, we celebrated a bunch of Virgo bdays over in Morgan Hill–Tyler, Cameron, mine and Rob’s (though Rob had car trouble and didn’t actually make it to the celebration).

Cindy made an amazing vegan cake for us as well as ice cream sandwiches for Tyler and Rob. As always, the kids had fun — actually, these days, Cameron and Chloe are lap-bound owing to their fear of Cindy’s new doggies; Dylan, however, had fun playing with his cousins.

Cindy also got these little necklaces and tutus for the girls and, of course, Cameron had to wear her’s….

soccer has begun!

We now have 2 super duper soccer players in our household. They started practice the first week of school and just finished playing their first games of the season this past week!

I thought I might have more free time now that there are 2 kids in school, but um no. With 2 doing after-school activities, it’s just plain busy. Dylan has practice MW and Cameron has practice on Tuesdays! They’ll both play a game on Saturday which means, on some weekends, Tom and I are going to have to split up which also makes me a bit sad as I’ll have to miss one of the kids’ games (if only we could be in 2 places at once!).

The first games were great. Cameron played at 9am against her good buddy Kaden! She just got in there and dribbled and kicked away–she was great! And there were many scores on both sides! This apparently was pretty impressive for this age set.

Cameron’s coach approached us after the game and commended her on her focus and skill–she really did great!

We had to hustle from Cameron’s game to Dylan’s…and we didn’t yet have his uniform so time was super tight. Luckily, we managed to find his small team (only 10 players!) on a vast field covered with several other teams! We barely had time to get him changed before the game started.

Since 9 players are on the field at once, this meant that everyone on Dylan’s team would be playing a LOT! I was worried their energy would flag and they’d get demoralized if lots of goals were scored against them, but they really rallied! I think they ended up losing by 1 goal, but this was remarkable given their team size and the fact that the other team had at least 3 more players than their’s (and so could sub-out and let players rest).

Dylan ran a lot and did 3/4 throw-ins for his team. He was focused and scanned the field before throwing the ball in to the player with the least coverage.

Soccer started early, but it pretty much took up the entire morning! We celebrated their success with lunch at Shun Feng (our favorite Chinese restaurant) and then HAKT came over for dinner and games.

And now for the pictures!

Tagged! Kaden's first game he played against his good friend Cameron.

While the big kids started school, Chloe started up another session of Studio Sprout. Last week was flubber and melted bead mosaics! She is very proud of her work (and so are we!)! She loves showing her art to us and claiming them and, though she is very quiet in class, her eyes light up with every project and she’ll happily accept any materials you give her to add to her “pieces.” It’s very cute and my favorite Tuesday morning thing right now! The only thing is that it’s only an hour and taking her to school afterwards seems so abrupt–however, Chloe doesn’t seem to mind. She already has good buddies at school that she’s eager to play with: Kayla (teacher Lauren’s daughter!), Charlotte (Margot’s sister), and Evie and Aisha (Jada’s sisters).

Dylan’s first day of school

saying bye to Dylan

It’s a bit odd now to have 2 kids in school. Dylan starts 5 minutes earlier than last year (and, luckily, 5 minutes earlier than Cameron), but on that first day of school, I didn’t know he started 5 minutes earlier and, as bad luck would have it, at the last minute, Tom decided he was going to stay home with Chloe instead of walk with us! So, we were a bit late getting Dylan to his class–it’s tough being unable to be in 2 places at once! I barely met one of his teachers (as he has 2–one will teach the first half of the school year and the other the second half) and really didn’t get a chance to see much of his classroom! Oh, and also, Cameron was late for class, too!

But, anyway, here he is. He had to find his seat by locating his parents’ phone number. Luckily, his was close to the door, so not much time spent on helping the poor fella look!

He now had music class every other Wednesday, and the first day of school was no exception! He came bounding back to his classroom at the end of the day so super happy about music class! And, a week later, he is still enjoying his teachers and school. He told us this evening that they sing Zippity Doo Dah everyday! I have since been able to take a longer look at his room (and to introduce myself to Mrs. Reeves) and have noticed, too, that they have at least 4 guitars hanging from the walls. The kid rumor-mill has it that this teaching duo is a lot of fun–and, if they continue along with their tradition, there should be a very fun end-of-year show (we watched T.’s when she was in 3rd grade)!

Cameron had her first soccer practice last Tuesday (and her second one this past Tuesday). So far, her team is extremely sweet–it is co-ed and she has a fantastic coach. He’s very patient and low-pressure (in fact, his son didn’t even practice at all at the first practice).

She’s been gearing up in Dylan’s old stuff though she did get her very own pink (of course) shin guards! She was a little reluctant to join practice after Tom, Dylan, and Chloe arrived and Chloe started eating her snack (she’d gone to the Boardwalk with Nikki earlier in the day, so she had lots of snack left over that she kept thinking about, but when I’d picked her up from the Boardwalk, her lunch had been left in Nikki’s car so they wouldn’t have to drag it around so she was unable to finish it!)

This week, I got some sushi which Whole Foods had to make on-demand. This took up all of the extra time I had (which I’d intended to use to pick up Chloe), so we had to just drop her off at the park while we did Chloe pick-up and she didn’t practice at all until we returned! But, once she started practicing, she did great! Looking forward to Saturday when we’ll see her play in her very first game!

kindergarten meet and greet – 08.26

in the new classroom
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

The day before school started, we went to a meet and greet in Cameron’s new Kindergarten classroom! Of course, I found out about it at the last minute…we’d bumped into her teacher in the office while dropping off some veggies for the teacher luncheon and I stopped to introduce ourselves….The minute she realized Cameron was her student, I saw her expression change — and in that second, I knew I was going to have difficulty finishing the conversation! Her teacher speaks to her only in Spanish (in fact, I have found out that she told the kids she only speaks Spanish and not English!)–this is part of the dual immersion protocol. She only gets English instruction from the other Dos Alas teacher!

Anyway, I was able to extract the words “hoy” and “a las dos” from our conversation…enough to make me realize there as something at 2pm TODAY that I hadn’t previously been aware of. Her teacher looked at me and asked, “puede?” And, doing a quick mental calculation of how many hours of work I’d get in if I left early, I replied, “oh, si, si.”

So, we made it! (Phew!). I’d forgotten Dylan had one of these events as well. Cameron got a worksheet with “activities” to mark off which basically took her around the room in a sort of self-guided tour–find your cubby, draw your self-portrait at one table and write your name at another (skills assessment, too!), get your picture taken, etc.

Oh, yes. One of the activities was to find the bathroom (muy importante!) and to make a new friend.

She just officially finished her first week of school and so far so good. We were expecting meltdowns from having to keep it together in a classroom where you pretty much understand only a teeny tiny bit–and the teachers have a drop-off-at-the-door policy (unlike the traditional K classrooms where you can come in and hang out for as long as you like). But, she is doing remarkably well. She likes it, she looks forward to it (still) and she talks about playing with Micah (with whom she went to preschool–she is also in Dos Alas, but in the other class) and recognizing kids from both soccer (which started on Tuesday as well) and after-school care (we did a dry run with both kids in after-school care so that she could have some exposure to the environment and to Nikki before the routine kicked in). All of these pre-first-day-of-school things (after-school care, soccer practice, and the classroom meet and greet) really seems to have helped her transition in…huge credit to her teacher as well for so quickly creating a comfortable space for Cameron and the rest of her peers! We have heard only extremely positive things about the Dos Alas Kindergarten teachers…they are loving and warm and expressive. Cameron has already learned a few Spanish words and is now singing Twinkle Twinkle in Spanish as well!

cameron’s bday party!

It’s hard to believe I still haven’t blogged about Cameron’s birthday. It’s long in the past now (we had her party on August 10th and left for camping on her actual birthday!), but as you will see from the pictures, she had a fantastic time. She chose the theme and many of the decorations and party favors for it — this year, it was all about ballet (which sort of surprised me since we’re still, even now, heavily into a Frozen phase).

This year, we had it at Santa Cruz Gymnastics, just like last year. And, we sent out invites to the kids in her SG2 group as well as the usual bunch of family friends. As it turns out, everybody joined in on the fun! All of the kids in her group, plus the siblings, and pretty much everyone from the expected family/friends list showed up, making a total of about 30 kids all together!

While all of her good buddies were there, she spent the most time with Jada. When Margot arrived (a bit later), there were hugs exchanged and much excitement.

She had a fantastic time and we got plenty of help with set-up and clean-up–thank goodness for good friends! But without further ado, here are some more photos from the event….

meeting Elsa and Anna

September 02, 2014 at 11:34AM

During this year’s Disneyland visit, the longest line we stood in was for Anna and Elsa! The day before, we’d stopped by and noted that the wait was 90 minutes. We though, ok, we’ll do this first thing in the morning when the line is shorter (presumably).

As it turned out, it took a while to get out of the hotel and get fed, etc. and the line was 120 mins. by the time we got around to getting in line. But Cameron was not to be let down–nor would she leave the line! I offered to stay in line while Tom took the kids on rides (Dylan and Chloe rode Storybook Land, but she refused to leave.

Once Tom returned, we switched places and I went and got some lunch for all of us — Tom and Cameron ate in line and Chloe, Dylan and I ate at Village Haus. The timing was perfect. By the time we were done eating, it was just about our turn!

All of the kids were so excited about meeting them, but Cameron and Chloe looked absolutely shell-shocked. They could barely respond. And, after all of that anticipation, only Dylan was able to smile for the group photo!!!
