auntie cindy’s bday
This past weekend, we celebrated Auntie Cindy’s bday and, wouldntcha know it, this li’l gal probably thought it was her own! She had that apprehensive-but-secretly-thrilled look about her during cake time…and it did not help at all that the bday gal had her on her lap the whole time and asked for help with blowing out the candles!
Chloe can be pretty reluctant with others, but she was a-ok with showing Auntie how much she knew about iPhones.
As always, the kids had fun with their cousins–including the new doggy ones.
Let me also just take a moment to note just how much Chloe is talking these days. She pretty much repeats what you say, but the cutest words so far include “castle,” “thank you” (which she says often!), “yellow” (which sounds like “lallow”), “pumpkin” and “Dylan”, “Cameron” and “Chloe”.
She is at such a fun age!
cold morning at the soccer field! October 26, 2013 at 10:24AM
Dylan still can’t play soccer, but we were out there at 8am nonetheless…with orange slices and granola bars and raisins for the team! Cameron brought her balance bike with her (third week in a row!) and she is doing so great on it! She’s already pretty tall on the balance bike — and Chloe is getting interested in riding it herself — so as soon as it seems safe to do so, we’ll transition Cameron over to the big, pink pedal bike!
After the game, we had a brain-dead kind of morning; I got a new contract and was working until 4am and Tom woke up in the middle of the night intending to work out, but he never made it to the gym, so we were all pretty wiped out. In a few minutes, we’ll be off to celebrate Auntie Cindy’s bday! For sure, there will be some photos.
Dylan gets a Dragon award for … what??
Ok. So the first Dragon Award assembly of the year included Dylan getting an award for being a good listener and being focused in class, a good role model for his classmates. Well, this kind of cracked Tom and me up because, well, he’s so easily distracted!!
We thought, an award for kindness? Empathy? Being a good friend? That’s a given, but an award for focus??!? And, as if to prove our point, when his name was called, he blasted past the teacher, the principal, and the school counselor and had to be called back so he could get his certificate and his hand shakes!
To be fair, though, he is remarkably well-behaved in class, although he is still one of the slowest workers (he still tends to drift off and stare listlessly at the walls–like this morning when I was volunteering and helping out with the math worksheets).
And, he does do reasonably well under the load of homework, piano, and soccer, all which need to be completed in compressed time because Tom and I work during the day.
He loves piano and soccer and, at least, he is self-motivated to finish all of his homework (even while grumbling) and is definitely not content to leave it incomplete!
We are very proud of him. Undoubtedly, most every student will receive an award this year, but it is always nice (and welcome!) to see your child celebrated.
Yes, son, you are doing a great job and you continue to make our hearts sing just by being you!
SuperKids Tri – 10/13/2013
Well, poor Dylan couldn’t do SuperKids Tri this year, but at the very last minute, Cameron decided she wanted to do it! We were so thrilled and proud of her. She has not been on her balance bike much at all — she’s had very little interest in it and we haven’t pushed it — but, once she committed to doing SuperKids, she practiced all during Dylan’s soccer game on the day before the event!
We’re not sure what finally persuaded her, but she sure was an enthusiastic participant!
I have to hand it to all of the super supportive people who are part of this event. First, when we were registering Cameron at packet pick-up, they let us roll Dylan’s registration over to Cameron since he obviously couldn’t participate. But, they still let Dylan pick up a shirt and grab a wristband so he could pick up race treats afterwards. Then, you see things like this–people just volunteering their time to help out–and it kinda melts your heart!

We saw some good buddies–Owen and Mattias from school, and Kaden, too!

I have to say, Kaden was super impressive; he swam all.by.himself. He was the only 4-year old out there who didn’t have a parent inside the pool with him!
Anyway, here’s the gal finishing swim (she didn’t actually swim this year–although she could have–but, rather, she clung to Tom’s neck and he sidestroked all the way across. Poor guy was quite beat from the effort!!).
Cameron had so little experience with her balance bike, that this leg was a challenge, but I love how she just went for it and gave it her all. And, now, she is definitely more eager to bike (bonus!!)! She is even talking about how next year she might be on a pedal bike!
She loved the run and, look at that form!
Ok. So, seeing poor Dylan so sad was the hardest part. This picture just sums it all up….He was so unhappy and disappointed, he didn’t grab any treats saying he wasn’t a super kid and he shouldn’t get treats because he didn’t finish the race. As a parent, it was a delicate balance of emotions–we certainly didn’t want Dylan’s disappointment to overshadow Cameron’s happy moment; but we didn’t want him to feel neglected either.
We are looking forward to next year’s event…when both big kids will be able to partcipate (knock on wood!).

celebrating Jason’s 12th birthday – 10/5
Last weekend, we were in Morgan Hill celebrating Jason’s 12th birthday! Unbelievably how fast time has flown!!
We don’t actually get around to the SJ side of the hill much, but Chloe felt at ease fairly quickly…even with Cindy’s new pups around!
We spent the night at Lola’s because we had the SJ Rock ‘n’ Roll the next day. After the race, we spent more time visiting with everyone.
Cameron is super cozy here! She surprised us by sleeping with Lola instead of with us!! She even slept in, she was so cozy!

soccer game – 10/5
Dylan had to sit this soccer game out due to his collarbone, but that didn’t prevent us from enjoying a leisurely lunch at the field while cheering for DYNAMITE to go, go, go!!
It’s been fun to see these kids develop. Last year, they won only 1 game (I think–although, gratefully, our coach and the league in general do not stress competition) whereas this year they are undefeated so far!
It matters much that many of them played together last year so, a) they know each other; b) they’re an “older” team (whereas last year they were a team of younger players–all teams are 6-7 year olds).
The girls are always so patient!

halloween-y clothes – 10/1
Here are the kids, getting into the spirit of Halloween!
Some kids are more ok with pictures than others…
I love this! They do argue, but they also do love each other!
Chloe is pretty attentive to what the big kids do and, of course, often copies…! Let me take a moment to note that she’s going through a huge language phase right now. Lots of new words — “again,” “spoon,” “stop”,”monkey,” “piggy…” There are actually so many, I don’t think I can remember them all! Also, she sings Music Together songs (“hello everybody”) and “Twinkle Twinkle” (well bits of it).
When she gets going on this talking thing, we’ll really be in trouble and poor Tom, for sure, will be unable to get a word in edge-wise!
