whale watching wednesday

Dylan’s preschool had a whale-watching field trip this past Wednesday and I was one of the lucky parents who got to go! It was an absolutely beautiful day and it was so awesome and so sweet to be able to join the pre-K set for the morning. Dylan had expressed an interest in wanting to ride with his pals, so it was even better that we got to carpool with Mariah and Finley (so sweet to hear their conversations back there!).

So, I’m not actually sure Dylan saw the whales, but he claims he saw the puffs of air coming out of the blowholes. This was actually my first time whale-watching…ever (!), so I was pretty excited. I even saw a whale tail!

As we were heading out to some good vantage points, teacher Cathy saw a millipede, so we all stopped to check it out.

Next time (and, by this, I suppose this means when it’s Cameron’s turn to go!), I’ll bring binoculars…Even though Dylan had a tough time seeing through them (as did I), they seemed to be pretty fun to play with. I was impressed at how well all of the kids so graciously took turns with the few that were in circulation!

to LA by horse

Car conversation, on the way home from pre-school today…
Dylan: I’ve been thinking about going to see gramma in LA.
Me (glancing at him through the rear-view mirror): Oh? That’s sweet. How are we going to get there?
Dylan: ummm. By horse….

And, yes, he was totally serious…!

Then they do warm-ups…jumping jacks, hopping on one foot, skipping, duck-walking, marching, a few sprints, etc…! Here’s Dylan doing his jumping jacks!

Then they practiced catching grounders with their alligator arms….

We’re super stoked that Finley, Dylan and Cleo are all in the same session again! Dylan and Finley practiced throwing and catching grounders to one another (after Finley sweetly declared that he was partnering up with Dylan!).

Yep, Cameron was in tow (it was really the MLK holiday, so we all got to join Dylan and Tom), and as soon as the kids ditched the softballs, she was all over them….

Worried that they’d come back and snatch them away from her (so hard being the youngest!), she tried to gather ALL of the balls up for herself. She was even asking me for help! Sadly (for her), I just took pictures and laughed.

Clearly, she was having just as much fun as Dylan! As always, she wanted to be in on whatever the bigger kids were doing, too.

After a while, though, she decided to bail and head for the playground. Once “practice” was over, Dylan and Tom joined us on the playground for a few more minutes of play until we all decided it was time to eat some yummy, yummy dinner at Dharma’s!

It was a nice way to ease back into our regular routine after such a fun long weekend!

Back Log: It’s hard to believe that, a year ago today, Dylan was in a splint and Cameron was this chubby, little 5-month old, cutting her very first teeth!

dylan’s photos

Here are some pictures from Dylan’s little camera.

So far, this is one of my favorite photos. Dylan took a picture of his mouth which looks dead-on like Tom’s, but without the whiskers!!! Oh, and Tom usually doesn’t have smudges of food on the corners of his mouth.

And, he got one of Cameron playing with Magna Tiles.

Well, I was super excited about seeing his pictures from the beach, but it turns out he didn’t take any! I guess he was just pointing and looking through, but not really taking any shots. Anyway, I’m putting all of his photos in his own little album on flickr.

Took the kids to the Aquarium today to check out that new baby penguin they announced, but the babes were holed up in a little nook, heavily guarded by their parents (and, yes, there are two, not just one!), so we didn’t actually see them!

Still, we had a pretty good time…despite the fact that Cameron only had about a 15-20 minute nap, and she’s trying to shove through at least 2 more teeth! See? I asked if she wanted to hold Dylan’s hand and they happily complied!

We spent most of our time checking out the seahorses, sea dragons, and hot pink flamingos before heading up to see the penguins.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a yummy dinner at Hula’s…they have the best sweet potato fries and pretty killer cocktails (and, after wrestling with Cameron for most of the day, boy did I need one!).

It was an absolutely amazing day yesterday, so we decided to take advantage of the good weather and head to one of our favorite beaches. We got our coffee drinks from Kind Grind and got our dinner from Cafe El Palomar (both right on the beach), set up shop in the sand and played and dined until the sun went down!

I love days like this!! And, I’m reminded of how lucky we are to live in a place as beautiful as Santa Cruz!

It’s only been 2 weeks since New Year’s but, in a way, it seems like longer…especially since Cameron is just talking like a maniac. She has pretty much been repeating everything she hears for what seems like ages now (she even now says “ZhuZhu pet”!). So, now we have this little person who can request just about everything she feels like eating (nori, cookie, snap peas, blueberries, banana, strawberries, cuties, broccoli, pasta, cereal, chocolate chip, drink, you name it) and who now claims toys with a big, loud “nooo! mine!!” At times, she’ll even bend at the waist, stick both arms straight out in front of her and tell Dylan, “STTOPPP!”

I love asking the question “who wants ____” (like blueberries). If she wants it, she’ll give a big smile and say, “I do, I do!” She’s quite enthusiastic!!

She also constantly sings “no more monk-ehs” (with finger wag and all) and requests her favorite books: “Goodnight Moon” (“moon”), “Bedtime Peekaboo” (“peek a boo”), “Owl Babies” (“owl owl”), “Curious George” (“bunny. shot” — short for the line in the book that reads “but the bunny took off like a shot”), and “Peek a Who”.

One day, she surprised me by reciting some numbers in sequence on cue (she knows 4-5-6 and 8-9-10) and I discovered that she and Lola count the stairs whenever they climb them (which is apparently quite often!!). She also often says “pret-ty dress” and “pret-ty shoes” when she puts things on (often new clothes from Lola)!

And, boy does she have good focus. While cleaning in the kitchen one day, I noticed Cameron at the train table playing with her stacking cups. She did not stop until she’d stacked them all up in the proper order!! She also likes putting crayons into their little box and stacking all of the square magna tiles into one pile.

Dylan makes it to midnight!

This was the first year that Dylan didn’t spend New Year’s with his cousins! The weather was hideous and I think I wasn’t quite 100% recovered from my cold, so we ended up inviting Heather, Assaf, Taliana and Bozsi and Dennis (Heather’s parents) over for dinner and gambling instead of heading over to Cindy’s house as we usually do.

Cameron tried in vain to stay up, but she eventually sacked out around 9 or so. The bigger kids, however, rolled dem bones for us (we played Sharp Shooters, a dice game–oh, wow, and judging by the price, it seems it’s out of print and in-demand!) and played their own games until, finally, it was time to queue up the ol’ computer to watch the ball drop in Times Square (who needs cable when you’ve got a good internet connection??).

Everyone was so engrossed in conversation when the ball dropped, though (!!), we actually missed the countdown by a minute or two. But, we all clinked and “drinked” our Martinelli’s anyway–kids included!

Everyone ready for 2011???

“shake your booty”

Cameron came home from school today with a brand new sentence! Dylan apparently told the ladies at preschool that I taught her this! But, it turns out her buddy Cleo did!

finally, some vids!

I periodically whip out either our Flip Video camera or our camcorder to capture the kids in action–time just goes by all together too quickly and viewing a clip always reminds me I should take more footage!

The first clip is from October 15th and, although that was not too long ago, you can see Cameron looks younger here than she does now! She was doing her full-body nodding back then and she does not fit in any of those clothes anymore…!

The next two are from the last session of Toddler Sports Academy. This is how Dylan and Tom spent weekly Wednesday mornings together!

Many more clips are still trapped on the camcorder. I’m in the market for a new laptop (the other one is grindingly slow), so hopefully, I will have some time to do some edits and post them!
