Taliana had an absolutely amazing Wizard of Oz themed birthday party where Heather, Assaf and family (Heather’s parents and brother) donned their incredible home-made Halloween costumes. But, before we celebrated, we took the kids downtown to watch the annual Downtown Santa Cruz holiday parade.

We secured our usual spot in front of breakfast (Noah’s Bagels) and coffee (Peet’s! The kids had hot cocoa…). The weather could have been better, but armed with a gigantic golf umbrella, we were undeterred by the light rain!

Although we have several pictures of Cameron actually sitting in a chair, she spent the vast majority of pre-parade time marching up and down Pacific Avenue!! She is so hard to keep track of — she’s fast and shoos parental hands away 95% of the time — Tom and I had to switch off! I chased her in the direction of Walnut Avenue, and he chased her in the direction of the clock tower!

After the parade (and a little pre-party break at our house with all of the kids), it was party time!

After successfully completing an activity, kids visited Tom, who played the role of the Wizard, to collect their medal for bravery (after throwing confetti water on the Wicked Witch (Heather’s mom)), their heart medal (after making/coloring a card with the Tin Man for someone they loved), and their certificate (after completing a maze with the scarecrow).

Dylan enjoyed melting the Wicked Witch with the confetti water the best! Poor Heather’s mom indulged Dylan (and the other kids) by re-melting over and over and over again in quick succession!

And, here’s the bday girl, herself, as Dorothy! Heather’s mom made the cake, complete with fondant yellow brick road and Emerald Palace (cardboard infrastructure by Heather’s dad)!!

After the happy guests departed, we stayed for pizza dinner and menorah lighting….Whew, what a day!

Chanukah 2010

first night of Chanukah
first night of Chanukah
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Yes! We did celebrate Chanukah this year, as we do every year, and celebrations just keeping getting better!

This year, we let Dylan light real candles on his own menorah while Cameron “lit” the old wooden one.

Dylan was very excited about everything Chanukah and probably cared less about his small gifts than anything else!

In addition to lighting candles each night, at bed time, we read all kinds of books about Chanukah. Dylan was especially interested in the part about the Maccabees hiding in the caves.

Cameron is obviously not really hip to the concept of lighting the candles in sequence, but she thoroughly enjoyed slipping the flames into the candles.

Chanukah was a full week! More posts coming up!

a terror-rific Monday

Yesterday, officers caught an escaped prisoner who kicked a door down at the infant room at the kids’ preschool and held a gun to the head of one of their teachers (she’s a gal who took care of Dylan when he was an infant and a toddler, who came to his first birthday celebration and who has also babysat for us).

It was one of those heart-stopping phone call days….Generally speaking, a call from the preschool is negative news–they’re calling because the kid has a fever or has been injured, needs to be picked up, etc.–but one prefaced with “there’s been an incident” (me: “an incident…?” Heart starts pounding, mind starts racing…how badly is Dylan hurt? It was his teacher on the phone…Could it be Cameron??) followed by, “Yeah. There was an armed intruder in the infant room…” (uh, did I just hear her say “armed intruder??”) is pretty terrifying.

Was so glad I was working from home and I could get to the kids within 15 minutes. Of course, it would have been only 5 if there weren’t cops blocking off all roads to the school.

I am so very grateful he didn’t hurt anyone, grateful that this nutcase was just sane enough not to open fire—gladder still that Cameron was downstairs, away from the immediate vicinity, and that Dylan was in the preschool room next door.

The teachers were heroic and did a great job of keeping the kids calm, despite the fact that Dylan told me they were shouting “Emergency!” and commanding everyone to lay down. I feel even more confident of their care now! These ladies were so incredibly calm and capable and I’m still in awe as to how they kept their wits about them!

I arrived to get the kids just before the preschool was evacuated to a building at the hospital. We had to be escorted from the school by officers sporting big rifles who made sure everything was clear before allowing us to walk to our car. At the nearby elementary school (where Taliana was), kids spent half their day hunkered down on the floor, away from windows with blinds closed, doing homework and crafts. Helicopters were hovering over our neighborhood all day, and roads leading into/out of our neighborhood were blocked off by officers until the prisoner was finally arrested late in the afternoon.

I didn’t take the kids back to the house after I picked them up since an officer initially told me they weren’t letting people back into the neighborhood and, besides that, I was worried the guy might lead the cops on a chase through the neighborhood that might involve gunfire. Since Dylan hadn’t had a chance to eat lunch yet, I took them to Thai House for some pho and pad see ew and then we met Tom at the playground to await word from the Sheriff.

Nerves are still a little wracked–the arrest was made just a couple of blocks away from our home, on a street that is so close, it’s on my regular running route.

Went to sleep last night with more gratitude than ever that family is safe and sound….Thanksgiving continues!!

Here are some links to the news coverage:

Let’s hope no more “bad guys” will ever come near these kids again….

It was potluck this year with Cindy’s in-laws coming, too….Ieanna made an incredible vegan bruschetta (Cameron is pictured here eating the tomato off the top of my slice), Cindy made couscous stuffed acorn squash and we brought pan-roasted brussels sprouts carmelized with a little maple syrup (both kids loved this dish, and I loved that they loved it!), mahalo mashed sweet potatoes, pumpkin cheesecake, and Tom’s stuffed tofu. It was all delicious!!

And, here’s Dylan posing with his cousin DeMarkus (Ieanna’s youngest).

The kids played hide and seek, air hockey and robbers and “thiefs”. Cameron did a lot of cooking up in the playroom, and the men, well, as is the tradition, they all fell asleep. Yes, that includes Tom.

Got home at about 9pm with kids sacked out and, although, Tom and I were planning on watching a movie (taking advantage of exhausted children’s sleep time!), we both sacked out, too!

Dylan was tired, but he was such a sport! He enjoyed running the race and getting his medal (plus Camelbak water bottle, hand sanitizer on a carbiner, and a t-shirt…such great swag for the kiddies!).

Cameron worked up quite a thirst. She’s gotten pretty good at drinking from open containers–unfortunately, she still jiggles drinks around like they’re closed, though, so still kind of a messy/wet process. One side effect of this is that she now knows “wet”, though my favorite new Cameron phrase is “rock ‘n’ roll”!

Soup Party 2010

We finally had good soup party weather this year (it was unseasonably warm last year!)–it was the first big storm of the season, complete with lightning and thunder! Julie, Dylan, Hanalee and Kees camped out at the back door waiting for lightning for I don’t know how long! When my flash went off, they thought it was lightning, but some of them caught on after a few shots (including Dylan who told me to stop taking pictures because they think it’s lightning).

Cameron must have dribbled all kinds of soup on her…at some point, she was just completely shirtless!

We had another decent spread of food: toasted coconut cupcakes, cookies ‘n’ cream cupcakes, rice krispie treats, honeybee no bake cookies (almond butter, coconut, and chocolate goodness) some roasted red bell pepper and cashew dip, cornbread with vegan cheddar, homemade hummus, chips and salsa, veggies and fruit, etc…plus Tom’s soups (once more, he did soups and I did appetizers and treats): Asian Noodle Soup (always a favorite with the kids!), Thai-style Coconut Soup; Carmelized Onion with Rosemary Toast, Roasted Carrot and Fennel, Black Bean and Kabocha Chili, African Sweet Potato and Peanut Stew, Curried Pumpkin with Candied Pecans.

Tom and I think this was our best batch of soups ever…every single soup turned out amazing!

As always, it was great having the company of good friends and family warming up our house, especially on such a cold night! Of course, there are more pictures on flickr….

On the morning of the last session (last Wednesday), Dylan asked me if I could come and see just how good he’s gotten, so I joined them (and so did Cameron, who is usually in daycare during this time) and snapped a few pics of the kids in action.

Here’s Dylan (and Finley) walking on tiptoes (a good calf exercise, I imagine!). By the way, hearing them sing, “Hi, my name is Joe and I work in a button factory…” was adorable. Dylan really belts out the tune and it’s a super cute warm-up for their arms and legs.

Overall, a pretty mellow bday night celebration but an enjoyable one (we hope!!), nonetheless!

So after our oatmeal/samosa breakfast, we took Dylan to a school buddy’s 4th bday celebration — another great time at Junebug’s Gym!

Lots of kids from school were there so it was like a day at school, but at the gym instead!!!

I can never get a good photo of the kids in the gym (haven’t mastered lighting for it!!), so even though this one is kinda blurry, I still think it’s sweet! Bday girl is in the middle and the kids are clearly enjoying lavishing all of their parachuting skills on her!!

While Dylan was swinging on bars and crawling across balance beams, Cameron was busying herself with the toys outside the gym area…

After Teagan’s fun party, we headed home to make some mint chocolate chip cookies for Taliana’s adoption day celebration before heading out to Boardwalk Bowl for some bowling fun!

Last year, at Taliana’s birthday party, Dylan’s feet were too small for bowling shoes…but this time, his feet were big enough to fit into the size 9’s (the smallest size available!). He’s also improved on his bowling form!

Cameron started out super excited about seeing all of these gigantic balls around. But once she discovered she couldn’t pick them up and they kept coming out of that hole she kept trying to stuff them into (a.k.a., the ball return), she lost interest and wanted to run away…Yes, away. Poor thing started feeling a bit overwhelmed by the noise and visual distractions!

We ended the evening with dinner at a local Chinese restaurant where the bigger kids continued to play with my Droid and Cameron devoured rice, chinese broccoli, tofu, and sweet and sour veggie chicken!

Baby girl added a few new vocab words, too: cracker, mango, empty, hot, and mush (from “Goodnight Moon”) !

And, thus concludes our fun-filled weekend!!
