grandpa Mike’s bday celebration

Yes, it was another busy birthday weekend up here! On Saturday, we celebrated Grandpa Mike’s birthday over at my mom’s house.

We’d gotten Teagan’s bday party date wrong (another party where we arrived 24 hours early!!), but still managed to get to my mom’s late…!

As always, Dylan had fun playing with his cousins. This time around, though, they started teaching him some Tae Kwon Do forms (I think both Tyler and Jason are at yellow or orange belt now).

It was pretty cute. The three of them were all pretty into it and Tom even showed Jason some additional “moves” (and he demo’d his roundhouse kicks — they were very impressed!).

I’m a sucker for the “buddy” shots!! Jason is still such a sweetie to both Dylan and Cameron…!

And, of course, sisters and mom doted all over Cameron. She totally sucked it up!

fundraising and mini-golf

Last weekend, one of the teachers from pre-school came over and watched the kids (Finley, Cleo, Taliana, Dylan and Cameron!!) while us parents (Mariah and David, Heather and Assaf, and Tom and I) went to a mini-golf fundraiser for the Walnut Avenue Women’s Center (another mommy we know volunteers for the organization).

I think it’s safe to say all had fun…at the fundraiser, Neptune’s Kingdom (home to mini-golf, etc) had been reserved for our use, so we could even play pool, ping pong and air hockey for free! I also won a raffle prize — a $15 gift certificate to Saturn Cafe (sweet!)!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the kids were scooting around (and Cameron, apparently wanted to try as well!), baking “cupcakes”, playing with playdough (Dylan and I made a batch earlier in the morning!), and making a “marble plan” with Dylan’s Quadrilla set.

Amazingly, Yesenia was even able to get Cameron to nap for over 2 hours (despite noise from all of these playing children!!)!

It was very cool that all of the kids pretty much knew each other well and that they also knew Yesenia well (except Taliana, but of course, she’s a big girl now, so she was pretty adaptable). It worked out well and we can’t wait to have another outing like this!!

Party time wasn’t until 11am, but Cameron woke us all up at about 7am, so while i puttered around the kitchen making samosas and oatmeal for breakfast (I know, interesting combo! But, I thought Dylan would prefer the “crunchy ones” to oatmeal), I let the kids watch some “Cat in the Hat.”

I tried to make the oatmeal especially appealing to Dylan by creating an “oatmeal condiments bar” which included a little “pitcher” of soy milk, some maple syrup, and a container of dried blueberries, another with chopped pecans, and yet another with sunflower seeds. Sure enough, he dug the “embellish-your-own-oatmeal” idea — he enjoyed pouring and sprinkling things in — but, in the end, he ate very little! Oh, well!

This morning, Dylan wanted me to paint kitty whiskers, nose and eyebrows on him and then, afterwards, he wanted to face-paint Cameron!

I think he did a pretty good job!! Here’s Cameron looking pretty satisfied with the final results (that green up high on her forehead is an “eyebrow”)!

Tom was a total sport…he even wore the facepaint to Teagan’s birthday party!

dylan’s owl

I just thought this art project Dylan brought home the other day was just so cute. He’s getting better at writing … and more interested in it, too. I think Taliana’s ability to read and write is probably serving as inspiration of sorts!

Monarchs and Mandarin

Last Monday, Dylan’s Mandarin class had a field trip to see the Monarchs at Natural Bridges and, because I didn’t want to be late in picking Cameron up from daycare, I took her with me.

She could not sit still for one second! We saw Kaden and Julie there, too, and Kaden looked so calm as compared with Cameron. She was running all over the place, refusing to hold my hand! I spent the vast majority of the time chasing her around….

Meanwhile, poor Dylan was drooping and dragging and spent a lot of time off on his own at another picnic table apart from the main group. Heather tried very hard to help him out with his project (while I was chasing Cameron around). After we went down to see the butterflies (Cameron had a blast running up and down the path and pointing out all of the bikes she was seeing), Dylan perked up. He and Julie ran around together for a few minutes before we all headed home.

Anyway, here are a few more pictures from the evening.

Cameron liked the fence looking out onto the road…and, I guess she got tired because she tried sitting on it to rest! She’d try, get up, examine the fence for suitable space, and then reattempt.

another pic plus Cameron gets possessive

Cameron’s language explosion is continuing. She’s added so many new words, it’s hard to keep up. A few recent ones that I’m remembering are “hot”, “rice”, “drink”, “swing”, “read”, “bike”, and she now signs, “happy” (for the happy bats we see in “Where is Baby’s Pumpkin?”)

Also, I don’t think I’ve mentioned how well she sings. She really “gets” music and likes to do songs on “vocables” (buh buh bah buh bah kind of stuff) and when I sing in the car, if I stop, she signs (and says) “more” and also starts bup bup bupping (singing on vocables)! She also sway-dances with her sweet little knees slightly bent whenever we start some music.

The days go by so quickly and are always so busy, there’s more new things she says and does that I’m just not remembering–the girl is a busy, busy bee and quite the chatterbox! Oh, how could I forget? She also knows, “mine”. Yikes. Uses it often, especially with Dylan!

Interestingly, at 14 months old, she has about 30 words (including some vocalizations — beep beep, choo choo, woof woof, meow) and about 14 signs — pretty much a reversal in stats from our Signing Smart book (which I just recently re-discovered on our bookshelf) which claims babies following their SigningSmart curriculum have about 25 signs and a dozen spoken words at this stage.Yep, we’ve got another talker…!

Before heading out, we got a family shot of all of us — Boots, the Map, Dora and Swiper!

Dylan selected the theme this year. For a while, it was between Wizard of Oz and Dora (since I got the mom-bob just before Cameron was born), but I was secretly relieved that Dora won out. This was a much easier theme to create costumes for!

By the way, I love how Tom gets into it…I mean, check out his costume!! He worked on this the day before and the day-of and did a pretty good job, all things considered! He also drew the map face on Cameron’s Map costume. Gotta love the enthusiasm!!

Here are some pics from the evening.

I should mention that we discovered a neighbor who has a model railroad with tracks that go all around from front-yard to back!

Dylan nearly stopped trick or treating right then and there. He had to ask the owner where his train was (and he got an invitation to come back during the day to see it — haven’t taken them up on that yet), and before we left the house, he had to point out all of the neat layout features (a bridge, a station, an Easter Island statue–ok, Bozsi and I pointed that one out)….

Two houses later, Dylan had to share with the other neighbor that she was living right next to a train layout and that he was invited to go back to see it during the day!

She got sooo excited going up to people’s doors and seeing their jack-o-lanterns and lights…and the inside of their homes!

One house had an aquarium just inside the doors and she was yapping away, excitedly pointing at the fish.

She had no fear and loved looking at all of the Halloween decorations in people’s yards. I mean, she was just so incredibly vocal, excited, active. She could barely stand to stay in my or Tom’s arms!

As soon as we got home, Dylan plopped down on the floor and started with the sorting, “is this vegan? is this vegan? is this vegan?” I had to say no to all of the chocolate bars and PB cups and I was worried he was unhappy about it all. Instead he was stoked! He said, “I’m going to sell you all my non-vegan candy!” So he gave me the non-vegan stuff and I gave him 3 bucks. All parties were happy (he’s still saving for that stomp rocket!)! Of course, we also have our vegan versions of the Milky Way, 3 Musketeers and Snickers (Twilights, Buccaneers, and Jokerz) as well as peanut butter choco bites that we swapped in for a few of their non-vegan counterparts…!

Overall, another fun Halloween, even though we missed spending it with Jason and Tyler. With Cameron as excited and involved as she was this year, next year is sure to be even more fun.

Yep, Cameron ran a 10-yard dash in the 1-3 age group at the Silicon Valley Marathon last weekend….She finished and she got her first medal!

Dylan ran the 200-yard dash and got his own medal and a t-shirt as well. As you can see here, his form is looking pretty good!

I would have loved to see the kids race, but there was no way I was going to be back in time. I did finally finish the marathon in about the time I expected (4:21) and was so happy to see everyone — Cameron, Dylan, Tom, my mom, Mike, and Auntie Christina — at the finish line!! Tom was super-dad, managing the kids, getting them to their races and carrying them and all of our stuff, post-race, when my feet could barely support my own weight! And, of course, the rest of the family was just awesome with letting us stay at the house, helping out with the kids, etc…!

Had just enough time to recuperate enough for 2+ hours of happy Halloween trick-or-treating later in the evening (pictures and post to come)!

preschool Halloween party day!

pre-K parade!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

It was Halloween party day at Dylan’s pre-school today and, amazingly, we managed to pull off a Swiper costume for Dylan! We picked up supplies for it on Sunday and had no time during the week to do anything with them. On Wednesday night, I started getting anxious…he couldn’t go to school without one!!

Tom and I dyed, measured, cut, sewed and fabric-taped a sweet little outfit during the wee hours of the late-night (Thursday)/early morning (Friday/today) and put on the finishing touches just a couple of hours before the party started. Tom did an absolutely fantastic job with the mask, fixing the ears I botched, and finishing up the tail!

After all was said and done, Dylan said he didn’t want to go to school; he said he didn’t want to wear a costume and he didn’t even want to bring it “just in case.”

Once we got to school, though, he saw all his little buddies in costume and before I was even out of the car, he was saying, “is my costume in back??” His buddies on the play structure could see him coming out of the car and they immediately were asking him where his costume was and telling him it was party day!

Once in his costume, it was all about fun (I think he’s telling Cleo, “Swiper no swiping.”)

Another enthusiastic response to his outfit from Jada. And Keala was telling him he could swipe cookies and candy today!

Once the kids were all lined up, we did a parade around the block. It was sprinkling just a little bit, but not enough to deter anyone.

When Dylan ran to go catch up with Finley, I got a shot of the tail (accomplished by dying two separate pieces of white fake fur in yellow and orange and then sewing the two pieces together–his pants were also dyed from gray to orange!).

Once back at the school, the kids had lunch and yummy treats! Luckily, on Wednesday when I’d dropped Dylan off, I’d noticed the kids were prepping cupcakes and sugar cookies, so we had enough warning and were able to whip up a batch of pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes and some vegan sugar cookies for Dylan to enjoy as well.

Overall, another super cute kiddie event. We still have a few finishing touches to make to the costume, but even if we don’t have time, Dylan is already happy with it as-is!

Back Log: At this time, 4 years ago (whoa!), Dylan and Finley attended their very first Halloween party together — at Finley’s house! Dylan was a pirate (in the front row of babies there) and Finley was Mr. T (right above the pumpkin next to the whoopee cushion!)
