Just yesterday, I started singing “clap, clap, clap your hands, clap your hands together…” and what did this sweet gal do? She started smiling and clapping. Wondering if the response was reproducible, I paused and giggled with her, then when she’d stopped, I started singing it again…and she started clapping! She gets it! It’s so cute!!

It’s one of those a-ha moments for us parents–we talk and yammer away with this trust that babies understand us, but the moment that comprehension manifests, it is always a delightful surprise…!

4th celebration

It’s been a big birthday week for our li’l fella! First there was birthday circle at school and then there was a mini-bday celebration at Lola’s house while Tom was at work and I was at a conference, and then there was dinner at Millennium, and finally — the fourth celebration(!) — was a dynamic duo celebration with Finley at the park!

The costume party was Mariah’s fantastic idea — Dylan surprised us with a request for Spiderman (guess he plays superheroes at school), so it worked really well; he went as Spidey (thanks, Auntie Heather, for the fantastic face painting!) and everyone else got to dress up as they pleased! About half-way through the party…or so…the boys led a costume parade around the little park.

We also both brought pinatas–our’s was the little spider which was eclipsed by the big ol’ “4” pinata (which we apparently got lucky to get! At the store, there was only a 1 and a 4 available–thanks again to Mariah and David!!). We let Dylan try chewing gum for the first time — some Canela’s he got from the pinata — and boy was he thrilled (and, of course, some promptly got on his car seat–sigh!)!

The rest of the Big 4 celebration involved posing with the pinata (one minute), playing on the playground, riding the wagon, blowing bubbles, and eating.

I think both boys had a fantastic time and the rest of the 100 posted pictures Auntie Christina took (thank you!) are in the usual place…! You should check them out ‘cuz there are a lot of cute ones!

Dylan’s bday circle

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Dylan had his bday circle at school today. Yesterday, when we asked him what kind of cupcakes he wanted to bring, he said he didn’t want a birthday circle, he didn’t want to bring cupcakes, and he didn’t want a birthday banner. It turns out he just didn’t want to go to school. This lack of desire to go to school has definitely been a tricky thing for a few weeks now! When we woke up this morning, I was vaguely worried about what would be on his bday banner (nothing??? Did he tell his teachers he didn’t want one??), but it turns out they know him well (or, maybe he told them after all!)…Amber drew a fantastic Spiderman banner for him! And he was happy when he saw it!

I hadn’t anticipated staying for the bday circle, but Dylan was asking me if I was going to stay and was talking about sitting on my lap (rather than on the special “bday chair”), so I got “clearance” to stick around Santa Cruz so I could make it.

Once again, Dylan got a special little rope with one knot for each year he’s been around; he got to choose some songs (ABC Dinosaur and ABC’s!) and a story (If You Give a Moose a Muffin). Then he got to pick four candles to blow out.

I’d forgotten I was supposed to make the cupcakes the previous night, so it was a good thing I remembered before night-night time and Tom pulled through and baked and frosted 30 mini’s!

Sure hope he had a fun time celebrating at school. We’re looking forward to taking him to a special dinner on Thursday and to celebrating with pals on Saturday….

Cameron is now nine whopping months old! I know I repeat myself when I say it’s hard to believe how quickly time is passing. She is now standing very, very well on her own — well, hanging on to the edge of tables, toys, boxes, etc.–and she’s mastered stairs. Yep, she yammers and laughs allllll the way up! Once she’s at the top, she is so proud of herself.

She’s also getting very good at playing with these sitting/standing rolling things. She grabs the back and, when it starts rolling away, she pulls it back towards her. Unsurprisingly, she digs sitting on them, too!

Just these past 2 weeks, she started eating Oatios, too. We go through about a box a week…seriously…she loves them! We put them in the container on her Elmo standing toy, so now, whenever she plays there, she opens it up and checks for O’s. If there aren’t any in there, she shouts out!! Can’t wait for her to start signing for them instead…!

this is probably true

This picture was taken quite a while ago now (on April 18th!). I wanted to scan the bigger and better picture of it before I blogged about it, but I haven’t done it yet and the Boardwalk just came up again recently, so I’ll blog about it now and post the cute pictures later.

Anyway, that day was a very big Boardwalk day for Dylan. It was his first time riding the log ride (he is finally tall enough!) and his first time riding the kiddie roller coaster (the Sea Serpent)…and let me tell ya, it made an impression!

First off, he was so excited, he couldn’t stop talking about it for days. Even now, he talks about the Boardwalk pretty often (note how Heather chalked out a spot in our backyard for the Boardwalk!) and just the other day, we had this conversation:

Me: How was school today?

Dylan: Good. I told my teachers that when I’m biiiig…I’m going to work at the Boardwalk….

Me:Oh! Really? What’s your job gonna be?

Dylan: I’m gonna be a controller…on the rides and….

Me: You mean like a ride operator?

Dylan: Yup. And I’m…and I’m gonna drive the cave train……….

Yes, it’s definitely good to have goals! And, honestly, who knows. If the Boardwalk is still around when he’s old enough to work, maybe he really will work there! Anyway, I’ll post the absolutely adorable pictures of his maiden voyages on these “big kid” rides as soon as I’ve got them scanned.

Taliana spends the night

So, yes, Heather, Assaf, and Taliana were having their home worked on, so we got to have a very exciting over-nighter with them! The kids were beside themselves with joy. Heather and Taliana came over pretty much after she got out of school on Friday afternoon and they played and played and played.

Heather drew an awesome road with some sidewalk chalk right in our backyard. There was a hospital, Sandy Way (by the sand and water table), a restaurant with a parking lot and a crosswalk (near the table), a gas station and the Boardwalk.

The kids scooted around like mad while the grown-ups sat inside and played a game. In fact, Taliana taught Dylan how to ride the 2-wheeler scooter! Both kids were very excited and proud of this accomplishment.

When it came time for bed, we tucked them in bed in the pink room and we continued to play downstairs. Apparently, they didn’t fall asleep right away (as is often the case with sleepovers, right??). They shared a flashlight first and did a little chatting, but they both eventually sacked out and, for the first time ever, Dylan actually stayed in the pink room all through the night…!

The next morning, the kids were still pretty excited. They got up at the crack of dawn (ok, it was 7am) and were all geared up for more playing.

We all went to Walnut Avenue for breakfast and did a little walking around in downtown Santa Cruz before heading back home for a little more game-playing and hang out time.

While Heather and I played Jambo, the kids went and dug up more potatoes!! We hadn’t really known that our plants were still producing, so it was a nice surprise.

I love that they garden like that. We’re looking forward to planting more things they can harvest — strawberries, cherry tomatoes, snap peas…something. We haven’t figured it out yet, but we will hopefully do so very soon….

safety glasses, badges, and coaching

First, Dylan had the badge obsession. It started the day we went to Lola’s birthday celebration and we had to “badge in” everywhere we went–the kitchen, the bathroom, the dining room, etc…As you can see by this picture (taken on May 7th–about a week after Lola’s bday party), he is still into badges. And then…Some when between Lola’s celebration and the day this picture was taken, he was hanging out with his daddy when Tom gave him a pair of his extra safety glasses. So, now we’ve got badge and safety glass fever!

Here they are again….It’s bedtime and we had a sleep-over with Taliana, Heather and Assaf (they were getting plumbing work done in their house and didn’t have water, so they spent the night!) and he, apparently, needed to wear his safety goggles.

And, on Mother’s Day, he was still wearing them!!

And, here he is eating cereal for dinner. Never mind that these are “Baby Banz.” He requested they be adjusted so they could still fit over his big ol’ head…! Dinner was more fun this way…!

This last picture was taken just this evening, so we clearly haven’t moved beyond shades yet!

Incidentally, Dylan has been “coaching” me on my runs. Before he sacked out, he was barking out which direction I should run in and which hills I needed to tackle. He’s a great motivator. He urges me to go faster and, when we get to hills, he chants, “I think you can, I think you can, I think you can!”

We’re getting up early these days and he’s tired by the time he’s ready to be picked up from school, especially since he’s not a napper or a rester anymore (as he’ll proudly tell you)! The last two times he’s gone on runs with me, he’s sacked out about half-way through! Poor little guy. I can always tell he’s out when he stops bossing me around and I’m left to finish my run without his company and with only my sweet thoughts of him and Cameron.

Lola’s Birthday

We celebrated Lola’s birthday this past weekend and made some mint chocolate cupcakes (a current favorite for everyone) with chocolate ganache and, of course, Dylan’s sprinkle décor. Here he is decorating them at Lola’s house before returning to his current badge obsession…

Yep. I found his old VeriSign Kid’s Day badge in his closet the other day and placed it on his bookshelf where he discovered it later that same day; he’s sleeping with it attached to his pants as I type! So, after finding it, he had to wear it everywhere…and “badge in” everywhere.

At Lola’s house, he badged into the kitchen area, declaring he had to “swipe it” (like a credit card). He also insisted I get my badge out of my car and that Auntie Christina get her badge, too. Then we were all three badging in here, there, and everywhere.

After a totally delicious home-made meal of Thai food — vegan pad thai, yellow curry, papaya salad, cucumber salad, rice, and mango with sticky rice, all prepped by Mama Howell (yes, mom insisted on cooking!) — we adjourned to the outdoors where, well, we continued to obsess over badges.

So, what’s this girl been eating, you might ask? First it was rice cereal, followed by bananas, peas, avocado, butternut squash, oatmeal cereal, applesauce, pears, sweet potatoes, mango, carrots, and now broccoli. We are enjoying introducing her to new foods and I’m eagerly awaiting giving her coconut next. Once she’s had coconut (which a doctor/friend has reassured us is not allergenic and should not be a problem), she can start having stuff like mango with sticky rice, coconut ice creams, and coconut water/juice–just in time for summer!

Back Log: At this time 3 (three?!?) years ago, Dylan had his first-ever Jamba Juice from a straw–peaches, mango, and banana–and thus began a lifelong (so far) love of smoothies…!
