flashback near-Friday

A year ago today, Cameron was about 24-weeks in-utero and was up and at ’em, tumbling and kicking away in the wee hours of the morning (5am-ish!). Dylan was super-enthused about the prospect of having a little sister, and we hoped his enthusiasm wouldn’t wane. As it turns out, we got lucky! These kids adore each other.

Tonight, on our way upstairs, Cameron attempted climbing (the step is still a little too high for her to get her knee up) and Dylan sat next to her and declared, “I’m giving her all my love” and leaned in to give her kisses. Quite by coincidence, Cameron was up at 5:30 this morning, and her first inclination was to start patting Dylan’s head and yammering away in his direction. She still is often beside herself with joy when she sees him — her legs kick like crazy and she starts squealing like mad. How long is this unbridled enthusiasm for each other gonna last??

When Tom dresses Cameron, the results are always so sweet. On this particular day, he opted to put a little headband (from Auntie Christina or Auntie Cindy) in her hair. This was the day we went to Children’s Discovery Museum and she really started crawling…! Our baby girl is now 8-months old.

Cameron is on the move

Just a few days ago, Cameron was doing a one-two, drop-drag and repeat to her target destination. On Friday (the first Music Together class of this session), she was still reluctant to travel any distance. Then, suddenly, on Saturday at the museum, she found all sorts of motivation to get her going. I took her into the infant and crawlers room to hang out (we never did get a chance to take advantage of this while Dylan was a crawler) and this display of ocean critters inside of it totally compelled her to crawl on over…!

Then, when we got home from the musuem, she was so enthused about being able to motor around, she was everywhere…and grinning ear to ear! Not content with just being able to get to appealing objects on the floor, she also started attempting to pull herself up. Now she can bring herself from a crawling position to a sitting position and start trying to pull up to stand…!

The most amazing this about all of this, of course, is just how quickly it happens!!

By the way, that thing around her neck is actually a headband…!

Easter Addendum

They had to find three egg-shaped objects and report them back to the grown-ups; name three bunny facts (eat carrots, have long ears, they hop!); and, finally, they had to hop like a bunny rabbit all the way to the back door where, lo and behold, some Easter treats were found!

The next morning, as soon as he woke up, Dylan asked Tom and I if the Easter bunny visited our house (and, lo and behold, he did in fact leave a small basket of goodies behind) and, later on in the day, over at Lola’s house, he heard the washing machine thumping away and declared, “Uh! I think I hear the Easter Bunny” (and that’s when we commenced the indoor egg hunt)!

Toy Trains in the Redwoods

Auntie Heather and I took the kids to the Redwoods to see the little toy trains display in the visitor center at Henry Cowell. It didn’t take long for the kids to finish pushing all of the buttons and to start telling us to “vamanos” (or, as Dylan says, “vanomos”)! But, since we were there at the park and there was a break in the rain, Heather and I decided we should do a banana slug hunt along the Loop Trail.

We didn’t have immediate buy-in from the kids, but once they were on the path, they took off like rockets! We ended up spotting about 7 or 8 slugs (and two deer!) before it started to rain and we had to hurry back towards the car!

Just as we got to the parking lot, though, the kids decided they wanted to check out the trains next door at Roaring Camp before we left. As luck would have it, just as we arrived, a train was on its way back to the station. Look at those smiles.

Easter weekend

I’m looking at the right-side of this blog and I can’t believe there’s a post indicating Dylan only started daycare in April 2007. Honestly, it makes me feel worst that Cameron has basically been going since she was a wee 5-month old, not even on solids yet! =( But enough. I’ll admit, I’m exasperated-frustrated by the whole situation as I dearly miss my mornings with the kids; this is my second week being back to a full 40-hour work week and my first day back to commuting over the hill (I avoided it for 8 long years–long, yes, but not long enough!). The level of Crazy in the household has just ratcheted up a notch….We are all getting up earlier and the kids are sleeping later because we’re eating dinner later.

Leaving that behind, we’ll move to cute pictures of the kiddies which always make me smile.

This dress that Cameron is wearing used to be Auntie Christina’s (I’ll have to try digging up a picture of her in it for comparison!) and Dylan’s shirt used to be Tyler’s. I still love seeing the kids in the hand-me-downs. They remind me of fond memories and feel like a way of intensifying the family bonds! So, these were the Easter outfits!

Sadly, we had a total seder fail this year owing to lack of bandwidth in planning, prepping and packing for a Yosemite or post-Yosemite event, but we did make haroset for a Saturday Easter egg hunt at a friend’s house and for Easter brunch at my mom’s.

Yep, Easter was all weekend. On Saturday, we went to our friend Jenny’s house for the egg-hunt. Dylan is still as unaggressive as ever. Instead of running around trying to get as many eggs as possible, he’d leisurely pick one up, examine it, describe the color to us, and then try to open it to extract the contents!! At one point, he was more thrilled to be up high on the play structure than he was to find that there were several eggs up there for the taking (he even climbed down without picking them up!)!!

But, that is indeed our Dylan; he’s as generous as they come. Even with food and treats he really likes, he always wants to share some with us.

At Lola’s house the next day — where we had to do an indoor egg hunt because of the rain — he did the same thing: pick up, open and eat stuff, lope around for some more…oh, yeah, and “>pause to play with Cameron (note the unclaimed egg right behind him!)!

Here’s Cameron at her buddy Kaden’s house for her very first Easter. Kaden’s big sister Julie is the same age as Dylan and is equally sweet with her younger sibling! Anyway, don’t let Cameron’s expression fool ya; she had a great time. In general, being outside makes her happy! Add in being carried while watching a bunch of half-sized humans running around, making noise and being interesting, and you’ve got a pretty content baby!

At Lola’s house, her dress didn’t last past brunch, but that was ok. She got up on her knees (only since yesterday has she really been able to put one knee in front of the other–an improvement from the tuck-drag thing she’s been doing), ate peas, and was held a whole lot.

You’ll find a lot more pictures of the kids with buddies and family in the usual place…flickr.

Sure enough, when we asked him if he’d like to ride a steam train, he was soooo excited. We told him it meant we’d have to get up early which inspired him to want to sleep in the clothes he was going to wear the next day! The very next morning, the minute his eyes popped open, he was ready to go….He could barely sit still to eat his breakfast!

We got to the train station just before the first train was about to depart (about 10:30am), but the line for tickets was so long and there was a much bigger crowd than anticipated (by the organizers), that we didn’t make it on a train until about 1pm. By this time, we were pretty irritated by the lack of organization and the chaos; there were no lines, so people were actually pushing and shoving to get on the trains, and one group actually got off because 2 fights nearly broke out near their seats! But, once we were on, Dylan was so happy! Even now, he is still talking about wanting to ride the train again! So, once more, we suppose it was all worth the trouble….

Here’s Dylan entertaining Cameron in our Yosemite West rental….As you can see, they still adore each other! At some point, I hope I’ll find time to post video of the two of them playing together!

Anyway, time is still flying. We just got back from a 4-night/5-day trip to Yosemite where we experienced the best of both worlds — a couple of warm, sunny days and 2 days of fresh snowfall! Plus, we didn’t have to use chains driving back home!

We had planned to snowshoe up at Badger Pass, but we didn’t get a chance — the kids seemed totally uninterested and Tom’s rented snowshoes were busted(!), so we let Heather and her family go adventuring while Tom and I took the kids to the snow for snack-time and tubing!

At first, Dylan didn’t want to try tubing; he just wanted to pretend to be a dog and do “tricks” for pretzel snacks! But, luckily, Taliana had an interest and after he saw her and me go down, he wanted to try it, too!

We had a blast strapping our two tubes together and going down at the same time…and Tom and I got a decent workout hauling them up and down and up and down the hill!

The rest of the trip was equally fun. We visited Bridal Veil Falls again, had a lot of delicious meals (our enchiladas with cashew cheese, HAT’s lemon tofu with asparagus and, Bozsi and Dennis’s minestrone), read a lot of books (with kids), and even managed to play a few games.

Dylan loved getting to play with Taliana immediately after waking up (and I think the feeling was mutual!)!

Coming back was rough — Cameron was particularly unhappy about going to daycare today, but as soon as we were home, Cameron distracted us from our despair with her pre-crawling skills — she managed to propel herself forward on her knees.

We had so much fun, we’re already talking about the next snow trip…the only downside to the trip was not having a seder as it was too much to plan and prep for it, but we are likely to incorporate some Passover dishes in this weekend’s Easter celebration with my family.

It was beautiful outside, so we decided to head to the beach. Ukeleles, sunshine, vegan donuts, drinks…life is good!

We stayed until about noon–when the Ukelele band started closing up shop–then we got lunch at Taqueria Vallarta. We spent the next several hours out in the backyard–toys got cleaned, Dylan had fun, Cameron finally got tuckered out enough to nap!

More pictures on flickr.
