the Grandma Sharon smile

Tom had to work on Saturday for a few hours and the kiddies woke up early, so we all decided to head over the hill together.

The kids and I visited Lola and Grandpa Mike while Tom worked and then, afterwards, we headed to Berkeley to check out Habitot, a kiddie museum.

Dylan loved being a firefighter, crawling around in the wiggle wall, playing with the toy BART trains, and bathing the anatomically-correct baby dolls!

I took Cameron into the infant crawl area, but I was too worried about germs to let her roam around too much in there, so the poor thing spent the vast majority of time in my arms or Tom’s! Luckily, I still think she had a good time, as evidenced by her smile in the picture above (which, incidentally, looks quite similar to Grandma Sharon’s! Tom concurs.).

Last weekend, Cameron tried the old exersaucer for the first time — Tom went out for a 10-mile run(!!) and I needed to do things with two hands (namely, bake cupcakes for Dre and Chris’s birthday celebration), so in she went! I think she liked it! There was a lot of cooing and attempts to sing into (and eat!) the microphone. She loved the disco ball as well!

My nephew Chris celebrated his 21st birthday! He and his older brother wasted no time in having a drink together at a bar — they went at midnight on Chris’s bday! As usual, Dylan had an absolute blast playing with his cousins and we barely saw him…until cupcake time, that is!!

On Friday, Dylan also went to the doctor to follow-up on his elbow. No need for xrays this time around, so he got a new splint instead. He’s eager to get this thing off. Now that he can move his arm without wincing (and the doctor is encouraging him to move it around), we have had a few challenges getting him to put it back on! We’ll see the doctor in about a week to get a follow-up xray and to hopefully get news of when he can finally be sling-free!

Here’s our radiant baby girl on a Wednesday (her official weekly markers) just after her 5-month bday! That outfit she’s wearing is sized 9-months! And, yes, she’s gearing up for eating solids — exhibiting lots of curiosity towards food and drink and she’s really getting quite good at sitting up on her own. In fact, she really likes sitting up and she’s learned to use the arches on her playmat to help support herself! She also hangs on to her dangling toys to help steady herself!

At her last doctor’s appointment, the doctor said she’s just “thinking about” teething, but you wouldn’t know it if you used her drool as any indication! She’s drenching everything and chewing on everything, too, including her books and Dylan’s!

She is also incredibly curious — it’s getting more and more difficult to keep her with me at work (we are now on week 2 (day 4) of her staying with a nanny). Not only does she grab for everything on my desk, she’s discovered her voice–and boy, is it loud!

Back at home, she truly is lovin’ the Big Bro. And he is so sweet to her. Right now, Dylan takes her hand and holds it as we’re going to sleep and immediately when he wakes up. Cameron kicks, giggles and squeals as soon as she sees Dylan! We can only hope that they continue to be this good to one another when they’re older!

21.5 weeks and what a week, it was!

fractured elbow. =(

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Well, we started the week off well enough — Tom was on furlough and joined us for Dylan’s gymnastics session on Monday morning. Afterwards, I went to work and Tom took the kids to the park! And, whaddaya know? Poor little Dylan teetered on a playground structure platform and toppled backwards into the sand. According to Tom, the fall was only about 2-ish feet, but Dylan landed square on his butt and he extended his arm to catch himself (as he’ll tell you himself!) and that was enough to do some damage!

Tom took him to Urgent Care, but Dylan passed all of the range-of-motion tests so they sent them home. But, the next morning, Dylan was pretty sore and he couldn’t move without crying out and wincing, so we decided to take him back for some x-rays.

It was also Cameron’s 4-month appointment with the doctor (slightly delayed, but on-track for her vaccinations), so I took her in while Tom was with Dylan. Cameron got her vaccinations and a glowing report — 95th percentile for weight, 90th for height, and (wow) 75th for head circumference!! This little girl is so sweet and is growing increasingly inquisitive. She’s grabbing for everything in sight — today, she even played with Wedgits with Dylan — and she continues to have a pretty strong interest in solids. Luckily, we have nothing to worry about with our dear little girl!

Cameron was done with the doctor before Dylan was (and even though she wailed when she got her two shots in her thighs and she tried to spit out the oral vaccine, a little nursing set her right)….

When we got to Dylan’s exam room, I discovered (because, of course, Tom was already there), his elbow was fractured! So, here he is with his splint and sling!

He has been a trooper throughout this whole thing. After the doctor’s office, he still wanted to go to school and the teachers reported he did great! He needed a lot of help playing with things and he complained about the splint being “so confusing,” but overall, he did well!

Back at home, he was still having trouble putting his GeoTrax together so he good-naturedly told me his “splint was soooo annoyin’!” We’re happy he’s not in great pain anymore. Next week, we go to Orthopedics to see if he needs a cast. Also, we’re, of course, very thrilled with our Pink Princess, who’s as healthy and as jolly as can be! Watching her play now just elicits endless smiles!!

We had to take a breather between Christmas and leaving for LA because we were all pretty tuckered out. And, this year, since my company was divested to new owners, I didn’t have many days off (in fact, Christmas Eve and New Year’s eve weren’t paid holidays this year and my PTO accrual was restarted!). We made it a point to visit family, though, as it is really important to both of us that the kids get to see Eli and Rocky, their grandparents and their uncles and Aunt Julie!

We ended up leaving on 27th instead of the 26th and, maybe because it was a weekend, we encountered terrible traffic on the way down.

Luckily, we had the DVD player for Dylan and, luckily, Cameron is just a great passenger! She slept most of the way there–and, during her periods of alertness, she played with her toys!

Dylan loved visiting LA! He loved playing with Grandma Sharon…and, of course, seeing his cousins! he was constantly calling for Grandma Sharon and inviting her to play with him!

Unfortunately, I had to spend 4 hours each day on work, so I didn’t get too many pictures (and we didn’t make it to Disneyland). But the upside: since Fred and Julie offered me an internet connection, Dylan got to spend more time with them!

We ended the visit with dinner on Wednesday night with Michael and Millie before we headed out on the road again. Dylan was so amped up from the visit, he didn’t fall asleep until after 10pm!

We’re looking forward to the next visit…it warms our hearts to know Dylan has such strong positive associations with everyone down south!

It’s been so busy, I haven’t had time to update Cameron’s weekly status! In between now and the last post (now nearly 3 weeks ago), a lot has happened — a holiday celebration with Heather and her family, Christmas with my family, our trip to LA, and New Year’s!

But first, Cameron’s update. She’s now rolling both from tummy to back and from back to tummy. She is really getting interested in food and drink that we’re putting to our mouths. She’ll reach for it (not always good when I’ve got a hot cup of Teeccino in-hand!) and keep trying to grab for it! Nonetheless, we’re waiting until the 6-month mark to start her on solids.

While we were in LA, Tom did an “informal” weigh-in and pegged her at about 16 pounds! We’re having a tougher time getting the cloth diapers to go around her waist and she’s clearly outgrown the size 2 disposable diapers she sometimes wears! She’s growing fast and is as remarkable as ever….

Christmas (at long last!)

We celebrated Christmas Day with our traditional brunch (we prepared tofu scramble and brought over the rest of the asparagus and sun-dried tomato risotto we’d made for Christmas Eve dinner at Candice’s) over the hill at Cindy’s house, but first, we let Dylan open his presents from Santa. Santa left a Matchbox car, some Nerds, a couple of candy canes and some Laffy Taffy–luckily, Dylan forgot about his candy–in Dylan’s stocking and a Woody Click house near the fireplace. Dylan was pretty stoked.

Once we got to Auntie Cindy’s house, we ate brunch (Christina made a vegan cream cheese spread and brought bagels for all–Cindy and Jeff made potatoes and their entree, and we shared our scramble) and then, yep, opened more presents.

Even Cameron got in on the unwrapping action! She loves the sound of crinkling paper!!

As per the usual, we spent the day there playing with the kids–this time, though, Uncle Dre was on “assembly” duty–and playing a few games.

It was another very late night…we ended up getting home around 11pm or midnight…And, just like that, another holiday season passed us by!

Candice, Jeff’s aunt, invited us to celebrate Christmas Eve at her house — she and Jeff’s sister Jennifer live not 10 minutes away from us! We had dinner (Candice had acorn squash stuffed with wild rice pilaf for us) and then sang Christmas carols with Jeff on guitar and Candice on her new keyboards! Cameron is clearly enjoying the company…!

And, yes, Dylan was tired from all of the excitement from celebrating with Taliana the night before! Before dinner, he played happily with Jason and Tyler, but he needed to take a power-nap before resuming activities!

It was so nice to be invited to their celebration…we definitely felt honored…! It was yet another late night (with more presents, too), but both kids weathered it very well. We’re glad going home was only a 5-minute drive!

Now that Heather’s parents are retired in Santa Cruz, Heather stays in town for the holidays, so we got to squeeze in another holiday celebration with her and her family.

Uncle David (Heather’s younger brother) came to town as well offering another compelling reason to celebrate together (he and I have been good friends for going on decades now, too)!

Since Heather and Assaf hosted Chanukah, we did the hosting this time. We served roasted brussels sprouts with carmelized onions and toasted pistachios (another repeat dish from Thanksgiving) and we made a vegan Sheperd’s pie (we’d tested out the recipe just a few days earlier…instant hit). Heather and Assaf brought black-bean foul.

I also managed to finish making peppermint crush chocolate chip cookies and Mexican wedding cookies and Heather’s mom Bozsi brought us coconut cookies and chocolate almond cookies!
