Dylan runs a race, plus more Disneyland

Well, this week was obviously a very eventful one what with our trip to LA, but there are so many sweet pictures and moments, I have to break ’em down!

Neither Tom nor I were in a position to run the Disneyland half-marathon this year, but we decided to register Dylan for the kids race. Dylan still thoroughly loves running — and Hankey Mouse — and we thought that combining the two would be a nice way to help him with his big bro transition…the Disneyland portion of our trip to LA was a sort of Congrats on Being a New Big Brother thing…! We splurged and spent a night at the Disneyland Hotel and spent two days at Disneyland.

On our first day there, we had to deal with logistics — room check-in, packet pick-up for the race, ticket pick-up for the park, etc….By the time we’d finished up, it was already 4pm! But, it was blazing hot outside (96F), so getting off to a late start — after it had cooled to 89F — wasn’t so bad.

We rode the monorail, Finding Nemo, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and Small World; we saw Mickey and we stayed to see the fireworks!

On Day Two, we had to get poor Dylan up at 6am to make the 6:45am start time for the 5K.

The course wound through California Adventureland and Disneyland. Dylan loved seeing the steam trains in the roundhouse and seeing Mickey and Minnie at the finish line!

After we crossed the finish, we made our way over to the kiddie race start lines. This year, Dylan’s event was a 100-yard dash from the top of Main Street to the 5K finish. Tom did a great job getting Dylan ready and making sure he made it all the way to the finish (in the meantime, Cameron stayed asleep on my lap!)! Dylan was so proud of his medals…and he ran such a good race! His arms were pumping, his stride looked good…he was fantastic!

After the race, we checked out of our hotel and returned to the park for more rides. We ended our trip with rides on the steam train (looped twice around the park!), Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Jungle Cruise and a visit to the Elias house (to see the model Santa Fe train — Dylan also loved playing with all of the computers in the kitchen).

It was an incredibly hot and tiring two days, but it was so worth it for all of Dylan’s smiles. He clearly had a good time! And, we have Cameron to thank for being such a stellar newborn. She pretty much just camped out in the Peanut Shell in between nursings.

Cameron and I get older

I officially started a new decade of life and, to celebrate, Tom and my big sister made a phenomenal multi-course vegan meal from recipes in the Millennium cookbook. Tom made the appetizer (barley corn risotto cakes with smoked onion chipotle sauce and lime pickled onion garnish) and dessert (chocolate almond midnight, pear cardamom sorbet, cinnamon sorbet, and nectarine sorbet) and Cindy made the entree (black bean torte with lime cilantro sauce). It was a small dinner with just family; it felt like the perfect way to start another year o’ life.

Cameron, of course, is getting older by the week (I’m so glad my own bday isn’t measured weekly!)! Today (or, actually, yesterday now), she is officially 3 weeks old! At this point, I can claim an improvement in managing the three of us while Tom is away at work. On Monday, Cameron and I took Dylan to gymnastics. His former “coach” started up a new gym which is more gymnastics-skills oriented and is much, much smaller. There were only 3 kids in Dylan’s group and I’m not even sure the other 2 will continue! We enrolled Dylan anyway thinking a month is a short-term trial and it might be good for him to get some one-on-one attention as well.

Dylan was awesome! He followed June’s instructions for her obstacle courses very, very well! And, he did a stellar job on the balance beams (at the old gym, he didn’t have much patience for balancing, so I was very impressed at how he just seemed to do it with such ease this time around!)!

Cameron nursed while Dylan was running and jumping around. At times, Dylan wanted me to go in and “play” with him, but when I told him I couldn’t just yet, he eagerly rejoined the group. At the end of class, we stopped by Coffeetopia for a steamed soy milk (for Dylan) and Italian soda (for me) and, happily, both kids nodded off in the car and we all got that siesta I’ve been longing for these past few weeks!

The following day, while Dylan was in school, Cameron and I endured blazing 94F temps walking the ~4 miles from home to downtown. She slept all the way there and woke up only after I’d procured a nice, cold Jamba juice and we’d found a good place to change diaper and nurse. Then, she slept all the way home!

This brings us to today–a busy day starting with a 9:30am Music Together demo class where we met Hailey (a friend from the mommy group and preschool) and met another mommy who just had her baby on August 2 and whose older son, it turns out, also goes to Dylan’s daycare (the mommy recognized Dylan!)! Amy, Hailey, Molly (Hailey’s 1-year old sister), Dylan, Cameron, and I swung by Coffeetopia for a quick cookie treat before Dylan and I headed over to the park to see his pals Cora and Anela and their mom, Carrie, and, quite by chance, we ran into Kristin and Amirah!

We left the park when it was clear Dylan was getting cranky, but despite having awakened early and having an eventful morning, he didn’t nap! Poor guy was left to play quietly on his own when I just sacked out on the couch with Cameron! Despite no nap, Dylan was just fine — a sign, I think, that we’re all adjusting to a new schedule and new routines!

weight gain and another beach day

We accidentally missed Cameron’s weight check appointment on Thursday, so we had to reschedule for Friday morning. This meant that I had to take both kids with me. I’m still somewhat intimidated by the prospect of hauling two kids around with me, but everything went smoothly despite the fact that it took nearly an hour to get everyone ready to get out the door!

I’d been waking Cameron up to nurse approximately every 3 hours if she didn’t wake up herself. I would say that maybe 5 or 6 times out of 10, I’d need to wake her up — we had no idea how much weight she was putting on and having a baby who easily sleeps 3 hours at a stretch is pretty new to us! But, as it turns out, Cameron gained a whopping 12 ounces in 9 days! The doctors hope to see about a half ounce gain for every day and baby to return to birth weight by their second week. Cameron surpassed expectations. As of Friday, she was at 8 pounds 3 ozs.! She is still a wee bit yellow from jaundice and her eye is still a little goopy from the clogged tear duct, but she is otherwise doing very well.

Harbor Beach – 08/28/09

After her appointment, we stopped back at the house to pack some snacks and then met Heather, Taliana, P., and Heather’s parents and their dog over at Harbor Beach. It was an incredibly hot day (nearly 100F!), but we wanted to get in some beach time while the weather was still good! Dylan has been lovin’ it. He and Taliana and P. ran races on the beach, enjoyed Italian sodas and all sorts of healthy snacks (dried mango, fresh strawberries, apple slices, sunflower seeds, etc.). Cameron took a nice nap in the car seat before I had to take her out. After I nursed her, though, she fell asleep in my arms and we hung out in the shade watching the bigger kids play….

the beach times 2: adjustments and such

These days, Dylan is with me MWF and now that Tom is back to work, I’m trying to find activities for us that aren’t too challenging but will nonetheless give Dylan a little opportunity to burn off some energy! The hope was that he’d tucker himself out and fall asleep on the way home so that all (me included) could all have a nice mid-day siesta! Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out so far!

On Monday, our timing was way off! First, Cameron was nursing nearly constantly up until about lunch. Every time I’d finish nursing, I’d try to get either Dylan or myself ready to go, but before the task was completely finished (Dylan still takes forever to get ready!), we’d have to attend to somebody’s potty need (mine, Dylan’s, Cameron’s) and then, it seemed Cameron would want more to eat!!!

After Cameron finally seemed sated, I discovered my clothes were still in the washer, so we had to wait for them to dry! By the time we could leave the house, I was thinking we should just skip the whole thing (as it was nearing nap time already), but poor Dylan had been patiently waiting all morning, so I felt that I should take him anyway!

I was super duper discombobulated that day. I forgot the Peanut Shell and Dylan’s portable potty! Cameron wasn’t entirely happy in the stroller and then Dylan needed to poop after only 45 minutes! He didn’t want to use the public potty, so we just had to pack it up and go home! Unfortunately, after all that hubbub, Dylan didn’t have enough run-around time and he wasn’t even tired enough to nap! He was also a bit bummed out that we had to leave so suddenly so I promised we’d go back again on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s trip was infinitely better. I remembered everything and we had Heather and P.’s company to boot (it was Taliana’s first day of Kindergarten(!) so she was not there). We were able to stay for a couple of hours — Cameron stayed in the Peanut Shell until I awoke her to change her diaper and to nurse her and Dylan and P. just played merrily along.

Dylan fell asleep in the car, but poor Cameron was apparently working on a biiiiig poop and she woke him up with her cries of anguish — shortly after we made it up the stairs (I had 1 kid in each arm!), she had a major blowout that I had to attend to and, poor Dylan, ended up getting a second wind as I was changing Cameron!

Obviously, managing the two has been a bit of an adjustment! But, we’re very grateful that Dylan is such a loving and proud big brother — he is having to wait around for attention and/or help from us — and that Cameron is a pretty “easy” baby so far….

Back Log: At this time last year, we had just returned from our very first camping trip with Dylan!

This picture was taken with my cameraphone just a couple of days ago….Cameron is a good sleeper! She nurses well and then sacks right out!

The other day, I took a fairly long walk (about an hour) to return one of Dylan’s library books and to pick up a few items from the grocery store and the little gal just stayed asleep the whole way!

Today, I took a shorter walk (about 30 minutes round trip) from OfficeMax to downtown and, once again, she stayed asleep. Actually, she was alert and looking around during lunch — I’d stopped in at Walnut Avenue Cafe to change her diaper and to grab a bite to eat (and to nurse her as well) — she was completely mesmerized by the fan and the hanging plants. The only time she fussed was when I had to change her diapers (twice). I’m grateful that her sploot was not a blowout as I’d forgotten to take an extra diaper shell along with us! So far, she’s makin’ it easy for us…! As you can see from today’s cameraphone shot, she fell asleep once again as I made my way back to our car…!

Tyler’s 6th Birthday Celebration

Last weekend, we took Cameron on her first long car ride (more than 15 minutes in the car) to join my family in celebrating Tyler’s 6th birthday! I have to say, Tyler was a total sport about his bday. Not only was he perfectly fine with delaying the celebration for a whole week, he was totally excited to visit Cameron while we were still at Sutter on the day of his actual birthday!

In any event, she did splendidly on the ride over. Unlike Dylan (at her age), she seems just fine with the car. She fusses a little when we buckle her in but, providing she doesn’t have any gas or she isn’t working on a poop, once she’s settled in, she falls right asleep!

Once at the party, I went upstairs to nurse her (and kind of dozed in and out of consiousness) while Tom took Dylan downstairs to join in the festivities. Sadly, I missed most of the party — I could hear folks cheering Dylan on while he took a turn swatting at the pinata and I heard there was a treasure hunt, but I didn’t get a chance to see any of it!

Cameron got to meet Auntie Ieanna and her cousins Ajrien and Demarcus for the first time! Meanwhile, Dylan was busy running and playing with his cousins. It was yet another no-nap-nic day, but as is usually the case when we go to Cindy’s house, Dylan was as happy as a clam! We ended up leaving only around 9:30pm or 10pm…and Dylan didn’t even want to leave yet! Gratefully, both kids fell asleep in the car on the way home!! The silence was a joy….

Back Log: At Tyler’s 5th bday celebration, Dylan tried a slip ‘n’ slide for the very first time!

On Friday, we joined Heather and her parents and her parents’ guest (a former student of Bozsi’s) for a short walk in Henry Cowell. At first, I wasn’t sure how we’d fare. I nursed Cameron before we left, but by the time we got there, it seemed like she was hungry again! Not wanting to delay everyone, I stopped on a bench and nursed her while everyone continued on ahead. I was able to catch up with them after a short time and, luckily, Cameron stayed asleep for the duration of the walk and through lunch! That was a whopping 2.5 hours or so. What luck!

Dylan had a great time because he could see Taliana. They examined the goosepens, climbed on burl, found sticks and leaves, and just had a blast running up and down the path!

Since Roaring Camp is right next door to the park, we could hear train whistles while we walked! So, after finishing the loop, we headed next door and caught sight of a steam train just coming back into the station! All in all, a very exciting day for Dylan and a successful first outing with Cameron for us!
