geocache 1298!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

After Wharf to Wharf, we headed to Harvey West Park to get all those hard-earned Book Bucks that the kids earned from the Summer Reading Program.

Dylan started off strong and managed to plow through most of the How to Train a Dragon series (he got all the way through Book 11! But, I think he missed a couple of the earliest ones)…and this was the first year that we let Cameron earn her’s. She earned a whopping 12/20, which is pretty good for a beginning reader (most of her books were in Spanish)!

Dylan and I were pretty tired from the run, but after the girls got face paint and all of the kids ate, we headed to the playground.

It was a pretty hot day, so Dylan and I took a break from the sun and, boom, found one of the coolest geocaches ever! I’d actually had this one on my list for a couple of years now, but it’s tough to look around when you’ve gotta mind the kids. Now that the kids are a bit bigger and Tom was also around to help watch the girls, we had an opportunity to search! Such a fun find!

The kids initially didn’t want to go. We ended up spending a couple of hours there, so I consider the excursion a wild success! Here’s Chloe with her butterfly face paint.

Cameron is quite the kind big sister. Not only does she look after Chloe, she takes an active interest in what Chloe is doing…and she loves doing her hair!

Cameron went with a turtle…still in under-the-sea-Little-Mermaid mode!

We saw lots of friends there, too–it’s such a great event. I’m looking forward to how Cameron progresses next year. She’s back to really applying herself to reading these days. Very proud of the kids’ hard work!

While Cameron was in dance camp, Dylan went to a day camp called, The Spot, over at Harvey West Park. For some reason, I had this little Chloe munchkin with me at pick-up time one day!

It just so happened that Cameron did her hair in a lovely side pony tail and I had requests (from Chloe) to take photos of both sides of her cute little head!

Cameron has spent the last three weeks doing summer dance camps at IAD: Swan Lake, Little Mermaid, and Frozen!

Chloe tried Swan Lake for 3 days, but on Day 4 (the last day and the performance day), she bailed and we returned her to daycare–she’s been much happier there, with all of her friends and familiar teachers!

Anyway, at the end of each dance camp, the kids did a cute little dance. Here are pictures and vids from all of them….

It was really, really fun to see Cameron dance, especially during the Frozen dance camp. She was so joyful and beaming from ear to ear…! Unfortunately, I was badly positioned to get great video coverage–a cute little girl in the front row nearly completely blocked my line of sight!

During the last week of camp, we got a chance to see some of the older girls dance and it was lovely! This coming fall, all 3 kids will be in dance class, so we have many more performances (both formal and informal) to look forward to!

She wanted me take a video of her riding, so here it is! Shortly after recording this, I left to pick up Chloe from daycare and we returned to find them doing loops on some of the small hills on campus. She’s really come a long way!

Dylan’s first Wharf to Wharf

first Wharf to Wharf
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

This year, Dylan and I ran the 6-mile Wharf to Wharf together!

He barely trained. We started doing 1-mile training runs way back in June (June 7th was our first run), but that lasted all of 3 weeks, with only 4 runs in total with the last one completed on 6/23 and with 1.42 miles being the longest distance we ran!

We didn’t do a single run in July. By this point, I had pretty much given up on the whole training idea–by the time we’d reunited from summer camp and work, it seemed too hot and too late in the day to subject a poor kid to running. I figured we’d have a nice leisurely jog/walk during the event!

Dylan and Finley, post-race
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

As it turned out, Mariah and Finley started with us! But, F. is a sprinter and it was very crowded, so very early on, we unfortunately got separated and I lost sight of where they were in the crowd.

The next obstacle was water–Dylan felt dehydrated and the first water station was waaaaay out there (at mile 2.5!)…much later than I had expected. After that first station, I ran with a half-full cup of water for him.

So as not to make it too strenuous or to tax his muscles too much, we walked up the hills (and we made a point to run down them!).

At around mile 3, we walked while he refueled with a granola bar (very glad I took one with us) and then, after that, we did a combination of running, usually to a sign or visible “landmark”. By mile 4.5, we employed a strategy of running for .1 mile and then walking for 20 seconds or so. And, despite his initial belief that he couldn’t possibly go another step, we crossed the finish line together!

This was a phenomenal first effort and I’m so glad that he has expressed interest in doing it again–this time with more training! Very proud and very happy to be able to run with my big guy!

walking back to the car
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

In total, we walked over 22,000 steps (Dylan wore his Jawbone Move and I had my FitBit)! We were rewarded with a beautiful view overlooking the finisher’s area at Capitola Beach on our way back to the car. I’m really looking forward to having this run be an annual tradition–and one where the whole family can run together! But, we’ll have to see if the kids maintain interest–I sure hope they do!

Official Stats:
Time: 1:27:15
Pace: 14:32/mi

We visited a new park in SJ with my mom and the kids. Martial Cottle donated 287 acres of land instead of trading it in for oodles of money. It’s a very cool park (despite today’s searing heat) — lots of land still in use for farming, grapevines lining pathway fences, beehives, and lots of flat, paved trails (perfect for kids’ bike riding)! It was amazing to see this much land in the middle of the city left open and undeveloped.

The girls were hounding me to take them to the beach, so I obliged. I got off work at about 1:30 so I could pick up Dylan from camp so we had plenty of time until dinner time. Cameron got to break in her new wetsuit and she loved it (and I loved watching her joyfully play in the waves–no boogie board with us this time around…but next time!)

a new week

We started off the week with dinner at the beach because it was gorgeous outside and we are still recovering from the whole theater madness!

Also, the big kids got some new wetsuits and Cameron, in particular, was super eager to try her’s out! But, in lieu of that, we let her play in the sand (it was too late and too chilly to head into the water). In the meantime, Chloe did some pinky-promises. She’s big on these these days!

Kids moved on to new things this week. Dylan went to Kayak Camp and Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Cameron and Chloe went back to IAD for Storybook Dance Camp.

Technically, Chloe is too young for the dance camp, but her teacher noted that she could participate so we gave it a shot.

Of course, now that “Little Mermaid, Jr.” is over, she wants to go there because the entire time she was at All About Theater, she wanted to be in dance camp with Miss B! Well, today was the last day of this week’s camp and she opted for good ol’ preschool instead. She apparently had a great day there, so we’ll bring her back again tomorrow.

So, we’ve also hired one of the preschool teacher’s daughters to help us out with child (Cameron) pick-up and to speak Spanish with Cameron.

Cameron has been enjoying the Spanish (and Cindy’s company–she really is such a nice girl!).

Anyway, here’s a picture of Cameron from today’s mini-performance:
