show time

The days leading up to the “Little Mermaid, Jr.” performance were very busy and full of excitement! And, finally, the day arrived. You can see Cameron is pretty stoked! And, of course, Dylan was, too.

Chloe, however, was very stressed out and overwhelmed by it all so she sat this performance out! In her own words, she “quit the show.” Good for her for knowing what her comfort level was and for finding the words to tell us! Lucky her, she got to watch the show three times! Once with Auntie Heather and the girls (who came on opening night), once with Tom (when he was on Concessions duty during the Saturday matinee) and once with Lola, Grandpa Mike, Auntie Christina, Tom and me (the last show)!

Of course, now that it is over, she is asking if she can go back to “mermaid camp!”

I spent 3/4 shows backstage helping kids do costume changes…it was pretty exhausting but it was fun seeing the kids all excited. I posted a lot of pictures on flickr, but here are a few more highlights of the kids:

I’m glad I thought to take even crummy cameraphone pictures of Chloe because she didn’t make it on stage and she was just so stinkin’ cute in her costumes!

behind the scenes

I won’t lie. This week has been super duper tough. Tom had work crises, I had work crises, the kids started dress rehearsals and I was/am scheduled to be backstage to help from Wednesday through to the final show. I can’t complain that much. The kids start their day at the theater at 10am; I only have to be there at around 12:30pm (when rehearsal with the whole cast begins). While they’re doing their thing, there’s a bunch of parents doing finishing touches to the set and the costumes. There’s a lot of chaos — kids who are still missing entire costumes, even as of this afternoon (and first performance is tomorrow night!)! Kids panic when they don’t have their stuff. Frankly, I panic, too, wondering how on earth this is all going to get pulled together in time.

I’m officially on “dressing room” duty (meaning, I help the kids get in and out of costume), but Chloe gets underfoot a lot. Poor thing. If there’s any indication that this really is very exhausting for her, it’s the 2 meltdowns she had today followed by her sacking out on the way home (by the end of the day, she’d completely peeled off her leotard and was just sitting in her car seat in her undies).

It’s also been pretty tough on Cameron. She was “too tired” to walk to the car herself today. I, of course, had my arms full of all sorts of stuff: stinky shoes, their box of extra clothes, 2 water bottles, 3 lunch bags, Chloe’s dress…oh, and Chloe, too! So, I left her there on the wall while I took all of the other stuff to the car. Of course (as has happenened with Cameron before), another parent (this time the director) noticed her crying and all by herself and then went off to look for me. Of course. Someday, CPS will call and I won’t have any answers.

Anyway, on the upside, Cameron is, in fact, a soloist Princess! She wasn’t initially cast as one–and she was, initially, disappointed enough in the initial casting to ask about the possibility of being an understudy (not for a soloist princess but for a mersister)! I think it was after the first week that she was “bumped up” to understudy for one of the soloist Princesses (for a little girl who broke her arm). Then, she was an understudy for any of the soloist Princesses…and, now, suddenly, she is one of the them! I’m very, very proud of the hard work she has put in to get this role!

She totally took this whole soloist princess thing in stride. The day that she was told she would be one after all, she just casually mentioned it to us only at bedtime!

Dylan is also not without his triumphs. He’s in the “advanced” group of dancers and gets to perform many of the dances at the front of the stage.

Now, let’s talk about Number 3 for a second. We’ll see if she actually makes it on stage! She is overwhelmed by the number of kids in rehearsal (there are 37 in the production), so she does ok in morning camp where there only about 5 kids, but she tends to melt down quickly in the afternoon.

Yesterday, she wouldn’t wear her leotard or jazz shoes and the only costume she agreed to wear was the Princess dress. I explained to her that she had to wear the proper costume if she wanted to be on stage, but she didn’t want it enough to change out of the princess dress.

Day two (today)
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Second day of dress rehearsal brought improvement in some areas. She was enticed enough by make-up (we put lipstick and foundation on the kids today) to put her leotard on and wear her hair in a braid, AND she was in a good enough mood at the start of full-cast rehearsal, that she even put on one of her costumes! This one here, is for “Under the Sea….” I had to snap a picture because this may be the only time we see her in it! She even made it to the stage!

Sadly, she wanted to go on stage for “The Contest,” but she got poked by a pin and that pretty much undid her for the rest of the afternoon!

Anyway, we will love whatever she chooses to participate in come show time!

a good sign!

Theater madness continues in our household. I have to say, I just love this phase–especially now that all 3 work play together! This time, they busted out the tents and set up a restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining! Dylan, Cameron and Chloe were “staff” (and, boy was I glad to see that sign about washing hands in the bathroom–loved that Dylan specified that you need to wash “well,” too!)

They also created a little menu of items … but shortly after the restaurant was set-up, Cameron informed me they were out of raspberries (she ate them all)!!

Also, you can see how their restaurant take-out food dispenser works here. Quite nice!

Dining in, I was also able to get a free massage with an old teether we found in the freezer just yesterday! Yes, this business establishment is highly recommended!

AAT Little Mermaid Jr. tix

Very excited. Dylan, Cameron and Chloe will all be in their first All About Theater production, “Little Mermaid, Jr.”, this coming weekend! They’ve been workin’ it (at rehearsals and at home)! Tix are now on sale here. Hope to see you there!

This one is already better at doing hair than I am! Yesterday, she did up her own pig tails (and braided my hair).

To conclude this Theater-Madness post, here’s a picture of the girls in the middle of rehearsaing their dance for “Fathoms Below”. Chloe is remarkably good at trying to follow suit. She’s adorable (and Cameron is an awesome big sister, helping Chloe out whenever she sees the need or is asked!).

costume fitting and set-building

IMG_20150627_120449
finally, all done!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Today, 2 out 3 kids did costume fittings–Chloe wasn’t very cooperative, so we are supposed to do all the markings at home and just bring all of her stuff back on Monday.

There are going to be a LOT of costume changes and, apparently, this group is pretty big (around 40 kids). This should make backstage/dressing room duty pretty exciting!

After the kids got fitted, I went out and helped do a little set painting. Tom, in the meanwhile, was busy helping Rick (my running partner’s hubby) and another dad build up a set.

And, while we were busy doing those things, the kids alternated between getting underfoot and playing with the other kids that were there — mostly Julie and Kaden (Jenny’s kids) and Marielle (costume coordinator’s daughter).

Kaden is exactly one week younger than Cameron and they’ve known each other their entire lives; they even had a couple of joint birthday celebrations early on. We did regular play dates with Kaden up until Kindergarten started, but Cameron and Kaden never really clicked. It seems now, though, that the “click” is finally happening! They are in the same group at rehearsal so they are spending 20 hours a week together!

Yes, that’s right. Their rehearsals are 4 hours long every day (and our kids are in there starting at 10am in the morning summer camp (so I can squeeze my work hours in before getting Chloe at 2:30). I have told the kids that this is basically their summer job…and, boy, are they working hard (and so are the volunteer parents!)! But, the great thing is that they are really enjoying it. Since we have friends with kids participating, too, the volunteer work has been tolerable…so far. Every night, the kids rehearse and they’re so eager to show us their new moves. I can’t wait to see the show!
