What better thing to do on a gorgeous first day of the year than go to the beach? It took us a while to get going, but we succeeded in our efforts to get out there and enjoy some sunshine and at least a wee bit of physical activity in honor of the new year.

found a geocache!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We’ve kind of taken a break from geocaching as I have discovered it often takes “too much time” to even locate the easy ones. But, I brought the GPSr today just in case and was rewarded for that effort, too!

After lunch at Cafe Palomar (one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in town), we went to the other side of the harbor to take a walk to Walton Lighthouse. The girls–Cameron, especially, had been enjoying playing in the sand, though, so there were requests to play on the beach. So, while the girls, played, Dylan and I snuck off to follow the GPSr’s guidance towards a geocache.

Disneyland … yes, again!

CA Adventure
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We actually splurged and got season passes for Disneyland this year (because 2 racing events plus a visit to LA made it seem like a good idea). Well, the week between Christmas and New Year is supposedly insanely busy, but we are not planning on getting these things again for a while, so we went anyway!

But, we had a plan. We made reservations at Carnation Cafe (which allowed us entry into Disneyland which we’d been told had actually been closed due to over-capacity). As it turns out, we had to wait 45 minutes for food, so again (as with our last visit), we got a free fast pass from the restaurant as compensation for our wait. That was nice! And, we had a pretty good vegan burger (and much needed coffee!) while we were there. Plus, our reservation was during parade time and we chose to sit outside, so we got to see the parade as well. The parade is one of Chloe’s favorite things to do!

After lunch, we rode the Jingle Cruise, got a fast pass for Big Thunder Mountain (return time was between 7:30 and 8:30pm!!!) and then headed to California Adventure for our very first visit there!

Frozen Fun
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

So, they put Frozen Fun in CA Adventure. We went to a sing-along show where, bonus, we got to see the REAL Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff (haha). Seriously, this was cute. Cameron was rapt and she was singing along loudly!! Plus, it was fun to see parts of the movie on a gigantic screen surrounded entirely by the music! The kids also like the Royal Historians narrating the story.

After the sing-along show, it was already getting dark! We watched a band parade by (lots of parades!) and then headed to Bug Land where we attempted to ride the caterpillar train (it broke down but at least we were in line for only about 10 minutes).

Then, we saw another parade on our way to Cars Land!

After that, we went back to Disneyland to use our fast pass for Big Thunder Mountain. The kids are so fun to ride with! Both of them rode with their hands up in the air!! I’m pretty sure I was the only one screaming on the ride!! After that, it was fireworks time! And then after fireworks, we started heading home. We got to go through an employee walk-way (“the fastest way to the front of the park”!). So all told, we managed to avoid much crowd madness and, for one of the busiest days of the park, we had a pretty good time! We ended with a little gift/souvenir shopping (Cameron and Dylan wanted to pick something out for Eli and Rocky). By the time we got to the car, it was way past 10pm! Kids sacked out on the way home. Success!

We made it to LA fairly early (around 1am?) which beats our normative 3am arrival times!! The drive was uneventful. The kids slept and Tom and I switched off (with him doing the majority of the driving).

We had dinner with Fred, Julie and the kids, went to Liam’s second bday party and went to Disneyland for a day, too. Always fun (and very short)!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

On Christmas Eve, we celebrated with the Taylors (Jeff’s sister’s house). They are always so kind and generous in extending an invitation to our family! And, we get to see the cousins, Jason and Tyler, for an extra day, too!

Jason and Tyler have 2 dogs, Nora and Loki, who apparenlty go everywhere with them. The girls started out the evening camped out on the couch, avoiding the dogs. But, at the end of the evening, the girls got comfy enough with the dogs that they actually pet them! Win (because then we didn’t have to haul them around in our arms all night!)!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Well, the holidays are officially over…! This year, Chanukah ended just as Christmas Eve began, so the kids had a whopping (count them) 10 days in a row of festivities and gift-opening. And, of course, we did our annual trek to Los Angeles where there were more gifts waiting for them…plus visits with family and another trip to Disneyland and our first foray into Disney’s California Adventure.

It has been an incredibly busy but wonderful winter break! And I will be sad to return to work tomorrow, not just because I’ll have to work (which I generally don’t mind, actually), but because I’m really going to miss spending time with the kids! They are so much fun to talk to and hang out with…and Chloe is still such a big snuggler and I’ve gotten spoiled by her constant company!

So, the picture above is this year’s family photo, but the celebrating began much earlier of course.

Scratchin’

Fun with Scratch!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Last weekend, we did our Hour of Code–had T. and K. come over and Cameron and K paired up to do an Anna and Elsa set of exercises while Dylan and T. paired up to complete one based on Angry Birds.

I’d say our event was fairly successful. My main goals were to have them come away with just 3 basic definitions: define a program, an algorithm and a loop (and, hopefully, a week later, the big kids especially will be able to spit these meanings out and describe how they fit together).

When the younger two started getting a bit antsy, I switched to a pen and paper activity which turned out to be far too simplistic for them. It entailed telling me which one of 4 directional arrows was needed to move this fictional flurb critter towards a piece of fruit.

Well, that took all of 30 seconds, or something! But, we also discussed everyday algorithms (e.g., getting ready for school) and then once they seemed pretty tapped out on that, they just played Minecraft.

At the end of it all, both Dylan and T. were pretty satisfied…and I was ecstatic that they are developing an interest! I love this stuff and it’s so much fun to see them catch on and just take off in their own direction with the building blocks they’re given!

So, this weekend, I took Dylan and T. to a meetup for kids! This one was on Scratch. I’d introduced Scratch to both of them before, but since I had to figure it all out with them, it was a slog and they got bored before they got hooked. I figured a class with more structure and a better guide would benefit us all.

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

This was a 3-hour session which only had a 10-minute break at about the half-way point! But, the kids showed no signs of flagging interest (even after a late night and early morning–the girls spent the night at our house, but the kids, ever giddy, probably didn’t fall asleep until about 10 or so and the big kids had to be ready to leave the house by 7:45am!).

Once we got home, both big kids wanted to continue working on their Scratch projects. Dylan even continued on after T. went home. I recorded him playing some holiday songs on the piano and he incorporated this into his creation. We also decided to record just one repetition of a stanza and then use the code to loop it the required number of times. It was fun! I’m enjoying seeing these sparks of interest for sure and I’m looking forward to seeing their projects!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Here’s Dylan with his Mandarin class. I can’t remember exactly when he resumed classes, but it was only a few months ago (some time after the school year started).

It is hard for me to tell how well the classes are going — we host the class at our house pretty much every other Wednesday, but even with my window into the goings-on, I have zero experience with the language so I can’t tell what’s what…really! But, Dylan continues to be enthusiastic and we continue to be hopeful that, despite our lack of ability to help him, he’ll emerge from all of this with some practical speaking and writing abilities!

Nutcracker performance

Cameron watched the Nutcracker for the first time last year and she has wanted to perform in it since then. She worked so hard — weekly rehearsals and, towards the end, near-daily rehearsals with the last dress rehearsal at the theatre lasting for over 2 hours (for her part!). She fell ill a couple of times during the rehearsal cycle and she missed some important ones when we went to Los Angeles, but she did it — 4 shows over the weekend after Thanksgiving!

It was amazing to see how this performance came together. I witnessed the very first inklings of her group’s choreography evolve into a coordinated group scene. I was backstage helping with the costumes, fitting the girls, labeling their stuff, learning the “proper” way to tie their ribbons–and the day before the final rehearsal, I was there to help spray-paint ballet shoes gray because a last-minute decision was made that their costumes would look better with gray shoes!

To me and some of the other parents, we wondered how it would all get pulled off. But, of course, it did. And it was spectacular.

This girl also adored Cameron and was always wanting to hug her and play with her. Plus, in the scene they’re in, they hold hands and do a little jig for a short minute. Soooo, no surprise that Cameron got sick. She was already on Day 4 by the time performance weekend rolled around, but we kept her heavily medicated for the performance.
