Thanksgiving at Lola’s

This year, we celebrated Thanksgiving at Lola’s house! It’s been years, maybe even a decade+ since we’ve done this. But, Cindy’s in-laws were in town (a rarity) and so we split up the celebrations this year (although Cindy and the boys–minus Chris–came by later in the evening to say hello).

Despite the absence of their cousins, the kids had fun. They played with Auntie Christina and Grandpa Mike and generally found ways to entertain themselves around the house.

Cameron actually ended up getting sick–as it turns out, the gal next to her in line in the Nutcracker line-up had pneumonia and, since she and Cameron hide behind a table together and do a little hand-holding jig together (and the fact that the little girl totally adored Cameron and always wanted to hug or hold hands), it was unsurprising that Cameron got sick. Luckily, she did not get pneumonia, though!

Speaking of food, this year, I picked out recipes for maple tofu stacks with apple chutney and cornbread. I was all set to help out — worked from home that day — but, as I was cranking away at the computer, Tom was busy taking care of absolutely everything. My offers to help were totally smacked down.

As usual, his cooking was a hit! He also made sweet potatoes, roasted potatoes and cauliflower, and a very yummy pumpkin pie with a Biscoff cookie crust.

turkey trot finishers 2014
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We had only 2 Turkey Trot kid finishers this year as poor Cameron had awoken at 3:38am that morning complaining of leg pain. As it turns out, she had a slight fever and, once her medicine kicked in, she couldn’t get back to sleep! So, as you can imagine, by the time 8:30am rolled around, she was already zonkered. She’d already been awake for a couple of hours before we left for San Jose; we’d taken the light rail to the start line (much hubbub) and they had to wait around for the 5K start. By the time the kids’ races started at 10am, she was out cold!

But, this was an epic year, nonetheless! Chloe ran her first Turkey Trot and Dylan ran the 5K for the first time!

Both kids loved it. Chloe was so sweet and so ready to run when it was her turn. She clung to my arm the whole time, but she was definitely game and running like a champ!

I actually ran the 10K and finished with my best time ever (7:58 pace, so 49:29 total) and I thought I might have a chance of running the tail end of the 5K with Dylan. So, I started walk/jogging the course backwards in search of them.

There were 10s of thousands of people, though, and I was doing all sorts of mental calculations to figure out how long it might have taken them to get to the start line, how long it would take them to travel a mile (factoring in some potential walking) and how long it would take for me to intersect with their path. I started to get worried after I passed the 2-mile mark and hadn’t encountered them yet. I walked way beyond them and finally got a hold of Tom on the cellphone. After several hang-ups, I finally gathered that they had just passed mile 2 so I had to run to catch up with them! And, I didn’t catch them until Dylan was already in the final stretch!

He looked great! I ducked in to go run across the finish with him, Tom and the girls.

He had a blast (said it was “easy”) and was even asking when he could do a 10K (answer: when he can run a full 5K without stopping).

It was nice that he got a good medal–it was the 10th annual, so the 5K and 10K runners all got the same medal! He was pretty stoked on it!

Pace: 13:51
Next time, Dylan will start in the faster corral (10-11 minute milers) where he and parent-with-stroller(Tom or I) will have to maneuver around fewer people and we will try for a new PR.

After the run, we headed to Lola’s house for Thanksgiving yummies, but I’ll save the pictures for the next post (have yet to upload them from the camera).

Tom’s bday weekend – Disney races

DSC_9927.jpg
Tom’s bday
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

So, Tom’s birthday fell on the weekend of the Inaugural Avenger’s Half Marathon. We had missed the registration for the kids’ run for the previous Disney half (which occurred over my birthday weekend), so we registered for this one. Our intent was to run together, but Tom’s foot is still out of commission. 🙁

This was Chloe’s first kids’ race, though! And, we did get to spend a little bit of time in the park. And, of course, we wanted to see family (why can’t weekends expand in time???)!

DSC_9946.jpg
kid finishers
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

So yeah, we registered for this race for a few reasons: 1) it’s Dylan’s last year for Disney Kids’ runs! 2) it’s always fun to run inaugural events and 3) it’s in southern CA and we can see family as well, and 4) we actually love taking the kids to Disneyland–their joy and excitement is priceless.

So, here are the kid finishers on Day 1 of being in southern CA (we arrived again at around 3am).

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Dylan was actually sick — pulled out of school on Thursday when I noticed him looking lethargic during my volunteer shift in his classroom. By Saturday, he was still a bit sluggish, so we were worried about him. We were also wondering how to keep track of all of our kids after their separate races.

After lots of questions to the staff there, we discovered that Cameron and Dylan could run the same race, so Tom went with them while I went with Chloe.

And, Chloe ran! It was so sweet. She clung to my arm the entire time, but she ran. This is actually better than many kids who just cry at the sheer immensity of the event and who don’t understand all of the cheering, etc.

But, she IS #3, so she knows running events have snacks and water, and she’s all about THAT!

I had suggested that they run Cameron’s distance instead of Dylan’s because I was still worried about Dylan being tired and maybe even relapsing, but they stuck to the course for 7-8 year olds.

Cameron zoomed ahead, but of course, she was 100% healthy (but she also has boundless energy!)!

That’s right: we went to Disneyland after the kids races and we had drum roll vegan gumbo! Yum. Satisfying. Downside was that we’d read about vegan Mickey Waffles, but it turns out they were part of a Character Buffet that cost $30 per adult and we weren’t about to spend over $100 for the 5 of us to eat a few waffles with some fruit!

We did return to the park after the half-marathon (I placed 4th in my age group, 68th in gender group and 350th overall (10,500 participants)! No PR, but it was windy and these are the best results in a big race that I’ve gotten so far). We came back to the park for the vegan waffles–Carnation Cafe will whip up a batch on demand (pancakes, too). Too bad they were gummy. And we waited for about an hour. To Disneyland’s credit, they paid our bill AND gave us a free fast pass.

The kids’ current favorite ride is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, so we used the fast pass on that one! Then, it was off to Casey Jr (for Chloe) and the carousel before heading back out. Oh, we did see Steamboat Willie and rode the train (much to Tom’s chagrin–he was waiting at the restaurant and told us to come back at 10:30). Now I know the train ride is about 20 minutes long and there is not enough time to watch Steamboat Willie cartoons AND ride the train if your table wait time is a “mere” 45 minutes!

Eli’s Bar Mitzvah 11/1

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We left home immediately after trick-or-treating and dinner and arrived in LA around 3am (I think) after enduring (and slowing down for) some pretty rough stretches of hard rain on the 5. Luckily, the kids slept 98% of the way (there’s always a little stirring back there as sleeping upright ain’t exactly the coziest!). They love seeing family, though (and showing off their costumes, apparently!)!

The big highlight of the trip was, of course, Eli’s Bar Mitzvah. We (or rather I) was surprised and honored to find that the big kids and Tom and I would also be part of the ceremony.

It was a wonderful celebration all around and, although, it was the first Bar Mitzvah I’ve ever attended and therefore have nothing to compare this to, it seemed Eli did a phenomenal job.

Dylan was extremely interested in every aspect of it and tried his best to follow along.

I had a hard time getting pictures because of the little one climbing all over me…so many of my pictures just ended up blurry, too! Sigh.

Sadly, we couldn’t stay long because Cameron still had Nutcracker obligations! So, shortly after the evening party, we had to head home (got home at 3:30 am with time change! Time enough for a nap before getting ready for the next day).

Anyway, this trip to LA was very short but also very sweet. We were hoping to have more time the next time we visited–I never did get that family photo I wanted–but time is just not our friend these days.

Halloween was a month ago

DSC_9466.jpg
silliness
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Ok. Halloween was a long time ago (today is 11/25). But, yes, it has really been That Busy: Nutcracker rehearsals, soccer (which finally ended on the weekend of Tom’s bday), field trips, classroom volunteering, housework (ugh), and, of course, our jobs.

Whoever said that people who say they are “too busy” for this, that, or the other is just not prioritizing it clearly didn’t have 3 kids (or any kids, for that matter) in an era where kids are “over-scheduled” with guided activities because, whether it’s statistically true or not, it feels like it is not safe to just let your kids play way over there (at the park, the school, or even just down the driveway on the street) without a parent making sure they don’t get molested, lost, or stolen…or run down by a texting and/or speeding driver, and during a time when it’s practically impossible for the average family to live off of just one income!

Ok. On to a little more levity!

Halloween was actually less of a “thing” for us this year (in this case, we did de-prioritize it) as we were going to be hopping into a car to journey to LA as soon as we possibly could.

Since Cameron and Chloe had been wanting to dress up as Anna and Elsa since forever, we felt it would be kind of crummy to just skip Halloween and not let them have their fun in costume. We kept our plans light, though. We went trick or treating with HAK (no T, alas, as she went with her friend) and skipped plan-making with anyone else.

It was a rainy night, too! Luckily, there was a brief break in the downpour and we were able to get in about an hour of trick-or-treating before our kids had had enough and were hungry enough to head back home.

Arguably, Cameron has more difficulty with being vegan, but she is committed to it. But the lack of available vegan goodies sort of put a damper on her enthusiasm for trick-or-treating. Dylan knows that he can trade up for vegan stuff, so he collects to trade. But, Cameron completely opted out at some houses. 🙁

After dinner, the kids did some trading and sorting before we swapped out their costumes for jammies and loaded ’em into the car with blankets!

T. didn’t trick-or-treat with us, but she did stop by to say hi and take a group picture first! A few more photo highlights below:

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Oh, yeah (pictures are in reverse order again because that’s how I see them in Flickr)! There was a school parade. This was actually an unfortunate year, from my perspective. I volunteered in Cameron’s class because they had a huge Halloween fiesta, with games and prizes and everything. I tried to leave as soon as I could to help with some Halloween centers in Dylan’s class, but when I arrived, he was in a different room and wasn’t in costume yet anyway (per the “rules,” older kids would only change for the parade).

Once done with helping in his classroom (despite him not being there!), it started to rain again so there was the assumption that the big kids parade would be rained out! So, I went home, but wondered if I should go ahead and head towards Chloe’s party and parade

Not too far into my considerations, I faintly heard an announcement at the school–a quick peek out the window confirmed that the parade was happening! So, i rushed back down with my camera, but not 2 minutes after I arrived, it really started to come down! And the parade was canceled! As it turned out, Dylan’s class had actually led the parade, so I missed him!!!

Sadly, rushing over to see if I could catch his parade forced me to miss Chloe’s event entirely.

It is not possible to be in more than one place at the same time…and with 3 kids, eventually, eventually, eventually, there was bound to be a scheduling conflict. And yet, I still feel terrible. My babiest is just 2 and she probably will never parade around on Halloween in an Anna dress. I only hope that she wasn’t sad that her parents weren’t there to be with her.

Alright. Now some pictures from the Kinder parade. All I can say in defense of the bad wig placement is that those wigs are ridiculous and don’t stay on! I was hoping Cameron would just want to skip the silly wig, but she wanted it, so there you go.

Neither Dylan nor Cameron had been in a pool since end of July when their swim lessons ended and we didn’t have time to really practice anything — biking or running — with either of them! I felt a little guilty as I could not really imagine entering an event without any training whatsoever, so how could I expect this of my kids?? But, they really did well, though it was definitely a challenge for both of them. Dylan was the only one willing to pose on the podium, for reasons I’ll explain !

As you can see, Cameron looked so joyful during the run! We love seeing this smile on this girl! But, shortly after she finished, one of her classmates (school had just started a few weeks before, so they don’t know each other very well), told her that she finished before her and this really bummed her out (and me, for that matter!).

Not only did the classmate say this to poor, sensitive Cameron, she and her mom had shared a swim lane with Tom and Cameron and her mom actually told me that she pushed her daughter a bit so that they could get in front of Cameron! I didn’t quite know how to respond, so I didn’t, but I was a bit flummoxed by the statement!

Oh, so we experienced a couple of technical difficulties during Cameron’s heat: 1) she was too big for her balance bike but she’s not yet adept on her pedal bike; 2) her shoes were still slightly too big and so the velcro kept on coming undone (too little velcro loops on the velcro tape because it was cinched as tight as possible). Dylan is the Big Cheese – 10/17-10/24

Mr. Big Cheese

Dylan was the Big Cheese during the 3rd week of October. You get to be Big Cheese based on a random drawing done in class. When you’re the big cheese, you get to do things like excuse people from the table, draw a person randomly during circle to answer questions, and other such classroom “responsibilities.”

The Big Cheese also gets to bring a share for every single day! And, of course, there are pictures.

On the final day, parents are invited to come in and tell a few stories about the Big Cheese and to listen to questions asked by classmates. Finally, the Big Cheese gets a poster of positive descriptive words contributed by classmates. It’s really pretty sweet!

So, Tom and I were both able to make it to Dylan’s presentation on Friday (where he read answers to questions like “What is your favorite vacation place? What’s your favorite food? Who lives in the house with you, etc.). We shared the story of how he made bday mud cakes and pies in anticipation of Cameron’s birth and how he chose her name.

Tom shared the story of when he got stitches in his head and very bravely sat still while the doctor (who had one arm in a cast!) sewed him up.

His classmates said very nice things about him (as I’m sure they do with all of their classmates), among the positive words were: brave, smart, quick, friendly, wonderful, intelligent, and so on.

It was all very sweet! Wearing the cheese head is apparently optional…it is also apparently associated with Wisconsin Packers fans! Ya learn something new everyday.

Dos Alas playdate – 10/18

Even though we had a bazillion things to do on Saturday, including Cameron’s soccer picture day and Dylan and Cameron’s overlapping soccer games, packet pick-up for the next day’s SuperKids Tri, and heading over to Cindy’s house for Jason’s 13th (!!!) bday celebration, Cameron and I took the time to stop by the Dos Alas play date at Grant Street Park.

This was organized so that Dos Alas families can get to know one another better. I was sort of hoping we’d see more Kindergartners there, but alas, there were few–just 2 from Teacher Shanna’s class, and just Cameron and Jasper from Maestra Zuniga’s!

Still, Cameron had fun. She was initially very shy, but she did eventually play with a little girl named Sotyo (from the other class) and her little bro.

Cameron is still managing as well as one could hope! She already knows more Spanish words than I do and she sings and speaks in Spanish every single day (her teacher kindly shared the music that they listen to in class and she wants to listen to the songs daily). She even prefers to hear the Frozen soundtrack in Spanish!!

The other very cool thing about all of this is that Chloe is repeating words, too, and singing along as well.

We are very hopeful that Cameron will be able to see this program through–at the pumpkin patch, Rio’s dad and I talked briefly with one of the teachers who had mentioned that some kids really struggle all the way until the 5th grade! I don’t think Cameron will be one of these kids, but Tom and I did discuss the possibility and agree that if she is falling far behind, we’ll go ahead and put her back into a traditional classroom.

field trip to Rodoni Farms – 10/17

first field trip to the pumpkin patch

Cameron had her very first Kindergarten field trip this past Friday! I got to drive her and another gal in her class and, boy, was that a different experience from driving a car full of boys!

I know kid personality matters–and this particular classmate was especially sweet, but still, the vibe was definitely different!

Usually, the kids tear out of the car and scatter as quickly as they can; this time, Chiara and Cameron patiently waited right beside me and then, when they did want to run around, they actually told me where they were going (as opposed to just running off without warning!). I loved joining the kids on their field trips regardless, but it was definitely icing on the cake to have such a manageable group!

The girls and I went through the corn maze twice! The first time, Samantha (the gal in the center) easily found the way out for us–well, maybe we were just fresh with energy and didn’t mind the running around!

We went a second time because a couple of other classmates (Rio and Angel) wanted to go again. I foolishly volunteered to take them all! The kids started getting hot and thirsty, not to mention tired, and we were stuck in some dead-end loop. I was beginning to wonder how’d I’d navigate them out when Rio’s dad came and found us (phew!)!

After finding pumpkins (no larger than the size of their heads!), the corn maze, and lunchtime, it was time to play on the hay bales.

I loved seeing this girl smile! I was also very happy to see that she never got in trouble for being disruptive or inattentive!! Looking forward to the next field trip, for sure!
