cameron’s family picture

Dylan didn’t have homework in Kindergarten, but Cameron does…usually, it’s really cool stuff like play ball with someone (this week) or count how many times you can throw the ball in the air and catch it (her answer was 43!!!). And, there’s a draw and color assignment, too.

Last week, she was supposed to draw a picture of her family. I loved this even though I’m a bit perplexed and maybe even a little distressed that I’m the only one smiling. What I loved about it, though, were the speech bubbles! She asked me how to spell, “why” and then I soon found out!

In case it isn’t clear what is happening, Dylan’s speech bubble says, “No” and Chloe has blue tears rolling down her face and her speech bubble says, “Why”.

Cameron has a remarkable sense of humor, that is for sure. She is also turning out to be quite an artist!

Below are some pictures she drew on the whiteboard.

Last week, Chloe made a scented collage with cinnamon bark, dried roses, star anise and mint! And, for this project, she was actually encouraged to use TONS of glue–pure joy.

Dylan’s first code camp – 10/12/2014

Mr. Dylan at code camp
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

A long, long time ago, I registered both kids for the Silicon Valley Code Camp Kids’ sessions. Unfortunately, Cameron had woken up with pink eye the day before and even though she expressed great interest in going, when Sunday morning rolled around, she was just too wiped out to want to go. Dylan, on the other hand, was up by 6am and ready to go by the time I woke up!

So, the two of us trucked over to Foothill College in Los Altos (near Stanford University) for a 9:15am session on the Raspberry Pi.

This was the only session we were going to be able to make it to given that we had 2 birthday parties (and an Ikea delivery) on the calendar as well. I almost decided to ditch the whole event (we’d spend more time on the road than in a session), but Dylan was extremely eager and so I’m glad we went. He is always such a joy to hang out with–so many interesting observations, so much enthusiasm-and it was nice to have some one-on-one time with him.

In the car, we talked about observing everything, Stanford (how it is an older and beautiful campus), the Google and Yahoo founders (who are all Stanford grads) and UC Santa Cruz.

The session itself was an hour and 45 minutes long! But, the time passed in a blink of an eye. We paired up with a 12-year old girl who was both very polite and equally interested. The kids set up the external monitor, logged in, edited a prepared program and watched their changes appear on the screen.

I just bought a portable laptop desk for Dylan and Cameron to use at home–it’s very small and can be rolled around and even lowered down to fit beneath my own little kitchen desk. I’m hoping this will provide more spontaneous opportunities for them to get on a computer and experiment. And, as I may have mentioned before, it is not a hope or an expectation that any of our kids will be software engineers (or engineers of any kind), but it is my hope that they do understand that computers can be creative tools as well.

I am hoping to register them again next year and I hope Cameron will be able to make it! As it was, I think the Pi session would have been too much for her to sit through this year anyway….

a visit with Lola – 10/6/2014

visiting Lola
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

It has been so terribly busy lately that we’ve hardly had time to do much visiting with family. Some people say that when you claim you’re too “busy” for something, it means it isn’t a priority. I say that’s rubbish!

With 2 kids in soccer, we have a total of 3 soccer practices and 2 games a week plus Cameron’s weekly Nutcracker rehearsal, Dylan’s weekly Mandarin class (which we host every other Wednesday), Chloe’s weekly art and gymnastics classes, and my weekly volunteer day in Cameron’s and Dylan’s classes (and now Tom has also started volunteering to help with math in Dylan’s class), we barely have time to breathe; that doesn’t just apply to Tom and me, but to the poor kids as well.

But, anyway, Tom and I ran the SJ Rock ‘n’ Roll this past weekend, so we had the opportunity to spend at least a little time with Lola and Grandpa Mike. The kids immediately fell into their role of disciplining poor Grandpa Mike (who was intent on watching the Giants game–went for a whopping 18 innings, that game!) and ran around like they owned the joint.

This time around, we didn’t get a chance to see the cousins (whose grandma was visiting from out of town), but the kids still had fun and I am reminded of just how much I miss our family time!

As for the run, we started at 8am and 67F and ended an hour and 53mins (me) and 2 hours (Tom) later when it was already close to, if not at or above 80F. No PRs for either of us (or Assaf who also ran!) given the heat and, for Tom, his lack of training due to a foot injury. But, none of us broke our bodies crossing the finish line, so that was at least good and we’ll be back again next year.

new chair!

We’re finally getting around to setting up the other bedroom in the house–yes, it’s only been 9 or 10 years or so. Sheesh. I finally just gave up on waiting for Tom to move his books on his own, so I quietly started moving them into his closet. Much to my (pleasant) surprise, I was not reprimanded for doing this! Instead, he quietly accepted the state of things and then proceeded to help clear space for kid furniture. Phew.

So, we journeyed to Ikea to get a new loft bed for Dylan. This way, he can tuck his desk under his bed and have more space in the room for other things! Dylan and Cameron both picked out new chairs for themselves and, once we assembled them (about a week after purchasing them!), Dylan set up his own little photo studio. This kid is adorable; so many ideas, so little time!

By the way, I’m posting this on 10/10, but backdating it to when the picture was already taken. I’m sure this will confuse me later, but it seems better to somehow maintain the photo time sequence!

Chloe and I have been going to art at Studio Sprout on Tuesdays and gymnastics and Coffeetopia on Fridays since the start of September. I really look forward to these days (even today, I’m suffering from severe allergies and a cold, but I knew that she was really looking forward to gymnastics, so I took her despite feeling super crummy).

She’ll even put the iPad down and say she’s ready to go when it’s time!

When she was just tagging along with Cameron (at both activities), she was a wild woman, eager to do what big sis was doing. Now that she’s a registered student, she’s quiet and extremely reserved in class.

It was actually pretty impressive to see her get out and do her “bear walks” across these parallel bars because this involved her actually extricating herself from me!

Unfortunately, it takes her about the length of a class to warm up and start feeling chatty and more at ease! She has a great time and she always looks forward to both classes, but she is definitely in the Cling-On phase!

Although I think she’d get more out of gymnastics, especially, if she weren’t wrapped around my leg or wanting to be carried all of the time, I also love snuggling up with her and holding her so I’m also not terribly good at pushing her to press on without me!

I missed a photo of Eli since he had to leave early for a drumming lesson, but we’re definitely looking forward to see him again at his Bar Mitzvah where I’m sure we’ll get some good pics!
