Chloe at 15 months

I can’t believe I don’t have a picture of Chloe to post with this post, but I guess she’s often super close to me and therefore hard to capture on film!! Anyway, too much time has passed since the last Chloe update.

This girl has grown so very much. She says, “agua”, “uppah”, “mommy”, “daddy”, she now signs “light”, “strawberry”, “apple”, “more” (“all done”, too) and she is obviously so interested in talking, she practically can’t stand it! When she gets excited about something, she just starts babbling so excitedly, pointing and kicking and running towards thing-of-interest! She understands so much of what you say and we love hearing her say, “yeah” (and seeing her nod her head–it really is adorable. It’s the whole-body nod–incidentally, the big kids exploit this: when I’m driving and ask if Chloe is asleep, they’ll start asking her “are-you-a-horse” questions (based on the fact that we sing “Trot old Chlo” to the tune of “Trot old Joe”):”do you like hay?” “do you like it in the garden shed?” “are you a horse”…and the poor girl says “yeah” to each question if she’s awake!).

She has learned which plants “hide” strawberries and she rushes up to them, babbling all along, and moves their leaves aside until she finds a ripe one. When she does, body and mouth let you know she’s super thrilled! She loves going out into our yard. Not only is it fun to water stuff (including your toes) and go down the slide, there’s so much to eat! We’ve enjoyed the cherries, the strawberries and even the mandarin oranges! There’s also so much to smell–she picks off lavendar, rosemary and mint and brings them to her nose and mine…and then she loves flowers, just like Cameron! She picks as many different kinds as she can and shows you with a “da”!

If time felt like it was going by quickly with Dylan and even faster with Cameron, it’s all the more so with Chloe. There is always so much going on, we don’t have the luxury to Pause…and, of course, with the two big kids, her learning is on fast, fast forward. She already wants to do what they do, eat what they do, etc. I wanna say, “take your time, li’l girl,” but she is already so much her own person with her own will, she isn’t really going to oblige us, even if she could!

piggy paint!

So, for the past several weeks–dating back so far I couldn’t even tell you–Cameron has been saying things like, “Mama, we never paint my toenails” and “we’ve never painted my nails” and so on….It’s all very indirect, but obvious, you know.

So, I finally decided it was pretty harmless–and even boys can and do paint their nails)–so I found some non-toxic nail polish and ordered it just before Memorial Day.

I mention the order date because I let Cameron know I ordered it…and then the poor thing was tortured because the package arrived late! It didn’t arrive on Saturday, as expected, so we had to wait all the way until Tuesday for it to show up!

Every day, our dear li’l daughter would ask if the package arrived. She’d look so hopeful when I’d go to our mailbox and then when it wasn’t there, she’d ask some version of, “but it will come soon, right?”

When it arrived, Dylan was so excited for her! We all shook the bottles up (we got a 3-pack with pinks and red) and, after I had a go at her toes, Dylan wanted to do her nails….Then he told her that her nails looked beautiful and she beamed from ear to ear!

Ever since then, we’ve been re-painting as needed. One of the reviews of Piggy Paint knocked it for not lasting very long. Since it’s water-based, it “chips” off and you have to re-paint. We see this as an upside! She wants to paint them often anyway (of course, now, she also wants a billion different colors).

This evening (while at dinner with HAKT), she showed her nails to Taliana and K. and Taliana so sweetly told her she would give her a spa treatment some time!

I never thought I’d find myself in this world–and with Cameron at such a young age–but as long as “looking good” doesn’t eclipse other aspects of themselves, we’re fine with it.

Dylan was home sick about a week before his birthday, but he wasn’t soooo sick that we couldn’t get outside to get some sunshine (as a general rule, I try to get them out for even a few minutes of fresh air when they’re sick)…and, while we were out there, build the pizza box solar oven we’d talked about so many times!

It wasn’t the hottest day of the week (maybe hit a high of 70F), so we think we could probably get better results next time but, obviously, he enjoyed it enough to want to do it again…!

For our first attempt, we tried s’mores. Sure, it got hot enough to melt the chocolate, but we both decided the marshmallow could have been more done!

Also, it took quite a while (we waited 20 minutes). I think 20 minutes in hotter sun might yield better results–and, if Cameron is with us, we’ll also probably try a “cheese” pizza for her (vegan cheese on an english muffin or something). In any case, for sure, you’ll hear about it here.

We celebrated Dylan’s bday a couple of weeks back with a party that he mostly planned!

He wanted an ice cream party with a raffle (K. won the raffle!) and an obstacle course with only a few friends (Nate, Finley, Taliana and K., Marlon, Maya, and Ellie; siblings Cleo, and Camille; and Cameron got to invite one special guest, Jada. Of course, Tyler came, too!) and that is exactly what he got!!!

He didn’t want cake, so we made some brownies that were intended to be for the ice cream sundaes the kids made, but we forgot about that, so it was a sugary after-thought!

Anyway, Dylan is really into making agendas right now and, for his party planning, it was no different.

Long, long ago (like around Cameron’s party or Taliana’s), he told me his party agenda and I wrote it down:

– Opening: free play (I decided ice cream shrinky dinks might be fun, so we had kids do that while we waited for everyone to arrive)
– free choice time
– obstacle course: I came up with some ideas which Dylan then approved (dribble a ball 10x, shoot a basket, go up the stairs to the playhouse and throw balls into a bucket, walk backwards 10 steps, skip all the way back to the steps, run zig zag through cone course and then take a loop on a plasma car)
– circle time: this ended up being ice-cream making time; each kid got their baggy of ingredients and were instructed to shake it up until their ice cream firmed up.

This last thing was purely an experimental activity, but since we were surrounded by just close friends and family, I didn’t much care if it flopped, and we had back-up ice cream and sorbets waiting in the freezer!

As it turned out, it went well! The kids were very excited and energetic with the shaking of baggies. Afterwards, they decorated up their goodies and gobbled them up!

Dylan helped trace the medals out of cardboard and cover them with foil. At the party, the kids could pick an ice cream sticker to slap on to the front. In typical Dylan style, Dylan drew his own ice cream cone in pen on one side of it (he loves art)!

It was a very sweet bday for our very sweet son who continues to inspire me and remind me of just how wonderful life is!

He has grown into such a great creative and analytical thinker and he has such a big heart. I don’t think it would be exaggeration to say that I learn something from him everyday–from school topics and his own insights to how to be a loving and giving person. He is an inspiration. We love this guy to pieces!

On the last Saturday of April, we had our first BBQ of the season! The kids so enjoy playing out in the backyard (and even Chloe has become quite the expert strawberry seeker) and the weather was so nice, it seemed a shame not to take advantage!

We had HAKT come over so the kids could distract each other and we could have some grown-up company as well…

I think we had our second BBQ the next weekend! And, we’re still seeing some pretty good weather (very promising for Dylan’s upcoming bday celebration!)! The kids and I are out there practically every day. They help water the plants–this year, we planted some tomato plants, basil, snap peas, broccoli rabe, cantaloupe, 2 kinds of watermelon, cinderella pumpkin and baby bear pumpkin–and play. One of Cameron’s favorite things to play is “friend’s house” where I go to her “blue, yellow and green house” and have “flower soup.” Chloe likes to go in there and play peek a boo with the windows!

Mother’s Day – 05/12/13

After about 20 minutes on the road, we encountered terrible traffic on the 17–big truck turned over, dumped stuff all over both lanes, both lanes were closed for hours! Luckily, we found out at a point where we could actually turn our car around, so we did…and we took an alternate route to Auntie Christina’s house. It took us well over an hour to get to our destination, but the kids had fun.

I finally got the girls into their matching Easter dresses–yes, that’s right. I missed the Easter window owing to massive piles of laundry effectively hiding these lovely gifts from Lola! But, after mom asked where their dresses were, I dug around in the laundry room until I unearthed them and then I put them aside for Mother’s Day.

I consider remembering to put them in it a big win for Tom and me. 🙂

Lola was pleased!
And, these kids are so, so, so lucky to have such wonderful, wonderful grandmas in their lives!

We love Grandma Sharon and Lola tons for all that they do for all of us!
