Ok. I was so impressed that Dylan made this scroll out of little creamer cups (for the roll-y part) and scrap paper!! He “read” from it, too–pure improv, I believe!

I was berated for taking pics during their rehearsals, but I was allowed to take unlimited photos during the show!

They started out with a very lively song–with stamping their feet on the table and everything! Assaf videotaped it, so I hope he will post it so I can share it here!

Part of the performance involved a lesson on how to make a “stand still” potion (whoever steps into the area where potion is poured freezes! The kids even demo’d the effects).

They had those little black cauldrons all prepped with the ingredients measured out…although they had to use a surpringly large amount of water in the end!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

…And we were reminded that you can also just curtsy! I forgot to mention, too, that they had a magic show warm-up where stuffed animals were pulled out of hats and such! Also, lots of good riddles were shared. My favorite: what do poor people have, rich people need and if you eat it you will die? Dylan also told another good one: you’re in a room with a table and no windows or doors. How do you get out?

We’re really enjoying the riddles as is Dylan! I’m thinking I need to come up with some new ones for him !

We had another late night at the end of a very active week (Dylan went to Neary Lagoon, Dennis the Menace Park, and the Natural History Museum with camp; the girls did another round of gymnastics), but it’s summer, right?!

Music Together is officially over so you’d think we’d be able to be on time for our regular Friday play dates with Jenny (and Kaden and Julie) and Claire (and Shane!), but we were on our regular delayed schedule!

Still, since I didn’t have to rush the girls off to daycare (it was closed for the day), we spent a little extra time snacking with everyone before saying our bye byes.

My kids were starving and it was taking forever to get the veggie wrap I ordered from the cafe, so they had chip appetizers. This poor baby can’t believe it’s already all gone! Its moments like these (long waits for drinks and food) that remind me that we live in a destination city. People are flocking to the beach in droves again!!

Anyway, Tom came home from work early to watch the girls and get Dylan from camp while I spent my regular afternoon time in the office. I think they had fun in the afternoon, although, by Tom’s report, there was a lot of big-kid bickering (par for the course!)!

the 4th

The 4th of July was a mellow affair! Neither Tom nor I wanted to brave any crowds, so we spent the day hanging out with the kids at the house. HAKT had just returned from their long, 18-day vacation in Oregon/Washington, so we’d had them over for dinner the previous night and the girls spent the night at our house. So, yes, despite the lack of “organized” 4th activity, it was a celebratory day! We made some halo halo (translated as “mix-mix”–a special Filipino treat!) and gave the kids shaved ice, too.

So, wouldn’t you know it? My camera battery died, so visuals are scant and only cameraphone quality.

After Heather picked up the girls, we took the kids to their swim class. By the time we got home, had dinner, and showered off, it was bed time (oh, and we also got to briefly see Auntie Christina who braved traffic to spend the daytime at the Boardwalk!). We were running late (as usual), so by the time we finished stories, some fireworks were already being set off. The kids peeked out the window, and much to our surprise, we discovered we had an amazing view of fireworks being shot over the bay! Well, Chloe was so excited, I let her watch (even tonight, she was signing “more” at the window and excitedly pointing to car headlights and taillights!! ). Kids were cranky the next day, for sure!

We got a hot tip from our friend that the Harvey West Pool has open swim on Sundays from noon-3pm, so we took the kids to the Harvey West pool for the first time (they take lessons elsewhere!).

Dylan has actually been to this pool lots–all of the summer camp swim days are here–so he’s pretty familiar with the little pool. Chloe and Cameron were experiencing it for the first time, though! Such joy. Such fun!E Even Cameron liked it so much, both kids went again today, with K. and T., Assaf and Tom.

Anyway, here are pictures from last week….

Hooray for big brothers who can sway little sisters to join in the fun! The water is apparently super cold (what would I know since I didn’t suit up and just sought out dry patches of sidewalk from which to take some pics!), but it was a super hot day and kids don’t mind that much anyway!

Tom was a good sport and did swimsuit duty for us…! This little pool is great for the kids right now since the deepest part is only 3 feet deep. Both kids can touch the bottom with their feet and, I think this really helped Cameron gain more confidence and have more fun in the pool! She even practiced swimming class stuff on her own initiative! It was great!

Chloe, of course, needed a nursing break (and then since I was just dressed in jeans, it looked like I wet my pants!) and, afterwards, she popped back up and had another n’th wind. I took her to the playground when she didn’t seem that interested in the pool anymore.

Summer – Week 2

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of the second week of summer break! Dylan just finished his first week of summer camp. The theme is “Magic, Mystery and Music,” and coupled with the fact that we’re reading Harry Potter right now, the boy has got magic on his mind!

He’s been making “spell casters” from construction paper and ribbon and there is talk about holding a “wand-making workshop” once Taliana and K. return from their vacation! In typical Dylan fashion, there will be a sign-up sheet/registration for the event!

As for the girls, Chloe is now big enough to participate in gymnastics, so instead of story time, we opted for JuneBug’s. Cameron has clearly been missing going, but she’s no less good at doing her tricks! And Chloe just loved jumping on the trampoline. She can’t get her feet off the ground yet, but she’s really really trying–you can see it in her face that she’s trying to get her brain to send the signal to legs to get some lift!!

Seeing her at gymnastics motivated us to finally replace the worn-out bungee on our little trampoline at home and she’s really enjoying climbing up on that and practicing!

Yesterday, we also busted out the bounce house.

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We concluded our week with our final Music Together class of the session.

Time is flying by, but we’re still attentive to all of the ways in which Chloe is changing and growing!! Chloe now says “tenk youuu” pretty well now! And she’s beginning to say “more” (she still signs it). She copies the big kids A LOT! Unfortunately, the most recent mimicry involves jamming her finger up her nose and laughing (thanks Cameron!). Cameron is getting more responsive to us telling her that she is teaching Chloe how to share and respond to other kids with the way she acts. When Chloe grabs or tries to shove one of the big kids away from her toy, we remind her she’s watching and learning from her and Dylan, so now Cameron will share more easily, give kisses, guide Chloe along, etc. It’s really sweet to see (and a bit of a relief, too!). It’s been a fun week!

He’s been quite dedicated to fitness these days and it’s paying off! After his run, we took him to brunch at Dharma’s–big feast and refueling for hiking!

We hustled over there and got there close to 1pm, but luckily, everyone was still there, enjoying the park and the very pleasant weather.

We got finger paint for Griff (with whom we’ve taken some Studio Sprout art classes) and he busted them open during the party!! So, here he is with his daddy, clutching one of the “accessories.”

Capture California Adventure #130: CA_TreasureExplorers camping in the backyard!
backyard camping crew
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Well, we did it again–the backyard campout thing! Tom had the house all to himself and poor guy couldn’t sleep!

We had a ton of fun and this old tent of mine (which brings back fond memories of my trips to Burning Man–it still has a light coat of Playa dust!) was so easy to pitch: 2 poles and Dylan and I were done!

It’s a lot of work to camp even in the backyard, but the kids liked it so much, they wanted to camp again…and we probably will do it again one more time this summer (I hope!)! And, we finally just bit the bullet and hosted an impromptu-ish BBQ and s’mores roasting with a few friends. Hanging out in the backyard is always fun, but made much better with good company!

Tom did ALL of the food prep…he made our pesto pasta, corn, and prepped bruschetta…and then he lit the fire for the s’mores!

I hope having Shane and Kaden over on Cameron’s turf helped her bond a bit more with them. Although she and Kaden went through a hand-holding phase, she still mostly plays away from them rather than with them. This past weekend, though, it seemed like all of the kids together played really well–such sweet kids!
