Taliana’s magical 8th

Before setting out for Jeff’s bday bash, we attended Taliana’s awesome Wizard and Witches bday celebration. The kids made witch’s hats, decorated broomsticks, did up some potions, got a “crystal ball” balloon and sugared up their own ice cream scoops.

I just love how Dylan gets sooo into the imagination of it all. He’s really sending out those vibes for the “right” wand!

And, here’s Taliana, the birthday gal! It just so happens that the mother of hte gal sitting next to her helped me out last year when I didn’t have money for the raffle tix I was hoping to buy. Seeing that I was pregnant (or was Chloe already born but still super tiny??), she just offerend to loan me the $30 I needed and I could just pay her back by leaving an envelope in either her son’s or daughter’s classroom cubby. Since we had never met before, I was just amazed by her gesture! I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that her daughter is friends with Taliana; these are nice kids!

Anyway, since HAKT’s house is like a second-home, of course, our kids (and the rest of the guests) had a ton of fun.

Jeff’s swinging 50’s 50th

Jeff celebrated his 50th birthday in Madmen style. And, if it weren’t for my mother, our poor girls would have just been in plain old clothes! I’d shopped online for stuff, but didn’t find anything to my liking so I asked my mom if she could just make some felt skirts and I’d buy the poodle appliques.

I didn’t think she’d come up with anything for Chloe (I set aside this adorable retro-y pink sweater for Chloe), but she found an adorable poodle onesie with a poodle skirt that matched Cameron’s!

Poor Tom didn’t have time to get an outfit…I didn’t either, for that matter, but luckily I had my mom. She put an outfit together for me! Tom had to settle for wearing Dylan’s fedora. Over all, a great cocktail party. Here’s bday boy and big sis to close.

heart-warmers

Took the girls for their well-child check-ups this morning and got their latest stats. Cameron is now down to 65th percentile for height (38.5″!) and 68th for weight (33 lbs.) while Chloe is in the 35th for weight (17.5 lbs.) and 61st for height. They also got flu vaccinations; Cameron did the live nasal one and poor Chloe got the needle.

After the appointment was over, we had about an hour to kill before they had to go into daycare, so I took them to the store to pick up more bananas and a treat for Cameron who’d been such a trooper with her own exam (she had to undress and get into a cute little tiger gown — she stayed in it despite really wanting to change back into her own clothes!) and with Chloe’s.

We got a container of cantaloupe and some vegan donuts per Cameron’s request! After eating up all of the fruit, she started in on the donut. It occurred to me that I didn’t want her to eat the whole thing, but before I could even mentally formulate a sentence to warn her to stave off, she stopped at exactly half and declared, “I’m saving this half for my brother!”

Needless to say, I was soo touched (and proud) that, on her own, she thought about sharing something with Dylan that she really likes to eat..and this is a girl who likes her food! She is the girl who wants you to share with her and will eat off your plate first so that she’ll have some of her very own left for later (after all, she still is 3). It was such a sweet display of thoughtfulness and generosity.

Then, after work, when I went to pick up Dylan from CKC this afternoon, he was glum; another kid named Owen had cheated him of a turn to play handball, and I found out later that Owen’s cheating had caused Dylan to cry in frustration! On our way to pick up the girls, I told Dylan about Cameron saving half a donut for him and he cheered up as I hoped he would. As soon as she got in the car, he asked her if she really did save a donut for him and when she replied yep, he asked, “do you love me?” to which she responded with a big hug!

But the sweetness didn’t end there! Once we were out of the car back at home, Dylan came over to Cameron and said “I love you” then hugged her and thanked her for saving the donut!! Serious love-fest continued–they played and giggled and got along swimmingly all night long!

You’d think there couldn’t possibly be more love, love, love, right? But, while miso soup was cooling on the table, Dylan got a phone call from Taliana who just called to ask if he was ok (referencing the Owen incident). Conversation about inflicted wrongs and elucidation of details ensued before we finally hung up. Such sweet buddies, such sweet kids.

another day at Petroglyph

Dylan and I have now been to Petroglyph 3 times in one week! He’s been busy…and he just loves it. This was Cameron’s first time going. I’d had relatively relaxing and peaceful visits here with Dylan (the second visit included Auntie Heather), but the dynamics were a little different with the 3-year old. Yes, she had great patience painting, but she also wanted to keep going and going and going!

We now have annual passes which allow us unlimited studio time, but we still have to pay for each ceramic piece and she was easily going to rack up a gigantic bill!

Luckily, there is also a train table in back and a few Thomas the Train books we could read.

Overall, we had a great day. After Tom finished his run, he met us there and we had lunch together, got haircuts and didn’t get home until 5pm!

Tech Museum with Eli and Rocky

We were pleased we got a chance to visit with Fred, Julie and the kids while they were up here in the Bay Area. We didn’t want to make Fred and Julie drive all the way to Santa Cruz, so we decided on meeting up at the Tech Museum in San Jose. The last time I’d been here was at least 10 years ago when I was there for a company holiday party. I remembered enough about it to feel that Dylan would be too young for it…until now!

The assessment was pretty spot-on. Cameron is still a little too young to really get a lot from it, but there was plenty for Dylan, Rocky, Eli and David.

We eventually did catch up with the rest….Eli and Rocky tried the jet pack simulator.

The bigger kids also designed their own roller coasters and sat in the simulator to “test ride” their designs.

Then, just before we had to say our goodbyes, we checked out the upper level where the kids tried to escape their social circles (which followed them around)

It was a short visit, but I know the kids enjoyed seeing their cousins!

After Eli and Rocky left, we stayed behind to watch “The Rocky Mountain Express” film in the iMax theatre. Cameron and Dylan were fine with the hugeness and loudness of the film, but poor Chloe was really freaking out, so within minutes, I had to take her outside and we just walked around and waited until the film was over.

We also decided to get memberships to the museum for just an extra $10. And, while we were getting our Tech Museum membership, the kind museum employee informed us that the rides outside at the street fair would be free until 7pm! That was a bargain we couldn’t pass up. The kids had wanted to ride, but the rides were $3.50 a pop, so we were just going to skip them. But, since they were now free, we got to ride 5 rides, 3 of which were apparently from Michael Jackson’s Neverland.

Thanksgiving 2012

Thanksgiving started on Wednesday for us. We prepped brussels sprouts, 2 pecan pies, coconut mashed yams, sheperd’s pie, and drop biscuits and packed our bags in preparation for a sleep-over at Auntie Christina’s!

Early the next morning, Christina and I did our Turkey Trot (I think I got my best 10K time ever–52:03/8:23 min/mile) and then waited for the kids to show up for their races. While we waited, we found a geocache!!

Dylan’s race was 1/4 mile–after running .6 miles at the Santa Cruz Turkey Trot, this was short! Again, he had to run it without a parent and I had a little scare when I realized (after the runners had already started heading back towards the start line/finish line) that we’d assumed that he’d be finishing where Cameron’s race had ended!! I tried to keep my eye on him, but as soon as I got back to the finish line (carrying a frightened Cameron with me), it was so chaotic with parents and kids, I started to panic. I told somebody I couldn’t find my son and they immediately started to announce that all kids who couldn’t find their parents and vice-versa should line up against the side of the Pavilion wall. I went there and called Tom who promptly told me that he and Christina had already discovered the finish line was different and already had Dylan with them! Phew!
