Bug Day at Henry Cowell

Last Saturday, we earned us some more Capture California points by joining the Bug Day festivities at Henry Cowell State Park. Among other things (lots of pictures of local insects, a monarch puzzle, face painting, and craft activities), they had some “glasses” that allowed kids to see how monarch butterflies see the world. Dylan kindly modeled them for us.

I love how interested and engaged Dylan is with events like this. Here he is signing in for the Insect Safari.

Dylan also wanted to bring his bug habitat with him! He thought he found a bug, but the docent (and I) think it was just debris. Still, you can’t stifle enthusiasm like this!

While we were there, we met a nice little guy who was walking around with a reptile on his shoulder! It just so happens that taking a picture of a lizard earns us some points, so Dennis (Heather’s dad–a zoologist and specialist in reptiles) asked what kind it was. Turns out it’s a bearded dragon hailing from Australia.

So, Cameron actually napped through most of the festivities. She woke up just in time for the Twilight Walk which began at 7:30pm! Chloe mostly slept and hung out in the Ergo! She was out briefly for meals!

After the twilight walk, we listened to a very interesting talk on the moon. We found out a lot about the research modules collecting, analyzing and sending back data on the moon. There is evidence of water and some of the deepest valleys never see light and are colder than even Pluto! Taliana and Dylan listened to about an hour of the talk before they finally tapped out.

Unfortunately, the kids were too tired to stay for the telescopes they were setting up for their Astronomy event, but maybe we’ll be able to do this when they’re bigger.

strawberry picking

strawberry-picking adventure
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

After a very rough Tuesday morning in which the kids took turns being grumpy (Cameron was grumpy getting out of the house and Dylan was grumpy at our play date at the park), the kids rallied and had a great time picking strawberries at Swanton.

It was so windy and cold and because it’s been so hot in town, I forgot to pack their jackets (this kind of absent-mindedness is so pervasive these days, it’s driving me out of my mind)! Despite the windchill, they both proclaimed, very cheerily, that they both wanted to pick strawberries!

In the photo above, Dylan’s displaying our Capture California flag to earn us some points!

NO the way out of the car, Cameron proclaimed, “the redder the better!” That mantra stuck with the kids! They picked really awesome strawberries! I really wanted to pick 4 pounds, but it was so windy and I had such a hard time bending down with Chloe in the Ergo that we only took home 2 pounds. We made a yummy berry cobbler for the 4th with about 2 cups of it and we still had plenty to snack on for the picnic at Cindy’s! Best part was that the kids thoroughly enjoyed it!

The first celebration was in the morning at Wilder Ranch.

The party was safari-themed and absolutely adorable. The bday boy was a Jaguar and all the guests got to make safari binoculars out of old TP rolls (we were soo rushed getting out of the house, though, that we forgot our’s! Luckily, Valentine had extras)!

The kids then went on safari to hunt for animals (sweet little animal finger puppets) with their binocs! It was all very sweet.

We’re lucky to have such creative and thoughtful friends–instead of cake, they served yummy banana bread cupcakes with a veganized frosting. It was so delicious, I had 2.

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

After Griff’s party, we had swimming and directly after that, we hurriedly ate before heading to Julie’s bday.

The kids were pretty tuckered out from having slept less than usual in the tent the night before, running around at Griff’s party, AND swim lessons, but they both rallied for Julie’s party and had a great time…!

Julie’s little bro Kaden is Cameron’s buddy and she is just a bit younger than Dylan.

Dylan was pretty shy and mostly just jumped with Tom, but after Cameron woke up, they had a blast bouncing around together!

It was a very busy day and I wasn’t sure we’d get through it. I actually missed a lunch with some old AOL buddies. I felt horrible about this (it was basically a logistical issue with Tom and I both having forgotten we needed to take 2 cars to Griff’s bday…)! Tom was willing to take the kids to swimming all by himself, but I’m glad he didn’t have to do that. As it was, with both of us, we were just barely able to manage getting from one location/activity to the next just in time….

She is such a sweet little pumpkin, always ready to socialize when you smile and chat with her!

She cracks up doing patty cake, especially the roll it and pat it part, and she’s now beginning to enjoy peek-a-boo!

She really is such a joy–so mild-mannered and good-natured. Sure she can cry for a good spell when she’s in her car seat being driven from this big kid activity to that, but once she sees she’ll be rescued soon, she’s back to smiling and kicking her little legs in joyous anticipation!

She is also a very lucky little sister; Cameron and Dylan still absolutely adore her.

cameron’s big gains in swim class!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We’re excited to share that Cameron has made huge progress with swim lessons these past couple of weeks!

Last week, we arrived late, so while Tom parked the car, I brought the kids in. I plopped Cameron onto the pool steps just as her class was starting…and she was fine! In fact, she did great. This week, she did even better.

It takes her a while to warm up to a new environment and new grown-ups, but she clearly got to the point of minimal comfort with teacher Jonathon these past weeks.

Now, she’s going out there and doing her windshield wipers and making small attempts at blowing bubbles (still not there with this “skill” yet).

I think they must be “testing” to see at what level each student will continue for the next session. Jonathon brought out monkey island and had the kids try to combine splashy kicks and blowing bubbles starting out from monkey island. One of Cameron’s classmates still cries a lot when he is encouraged to try new things. In the past, Cameron has simply resisted with flat out “no’s”, but this past week, she was just as enthusiastic as could be!

I’m sure it helped that Dylan was on a nearby monkey island–they started shouting hello’s back and forth to one another!

Dylan has just been doing stellar since the start of this session and now he is at the point where they balance on the surfboard. If they fall off, they have to swim to safety (the island or the teacher).

Dylan was so super excited about getting to be up on the surfboard (thanks again to teacher Juan for infecting our kid with his enthusiasm for the sport)!

While Cameron got very comfy with the idea of floating around in a floatie, you can see Dylan climbing back up on the surfboard in the back.

We’ll see which classes the kids will be in. I’m not sure either of them will advance to the next level, but I’m very happy they’re gaining more confidence in the water and having more fun learning to swim!

The Big Backyard Campout was just this past Saturday and since we get Capture California points for doing the activity AND we still had all of our camping stuff ready to go, we (or rather I) decided it would be a fun thing to do.

Finley was dying to see Dylan, so we invited him over. He didn’t want to spend the night without his mom, but he and Cleo stayed for dinner, s’mores, and tent set-up.

Dylan loved camping in our backyard so much, he wanted to sleep in there again last night (after a long day of 2 birthday parties and swimming lessons!)! I managed to persuade him that it would be a good idea to sleep indoors, but I honestly don’t know how long I’ll be able to stave him off. I’m glad he likes camping, but ooooh boy is it tough on my back (air mattress doesn’t fit in the small tent!)!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

The kids enjoyed finding the first geocache so much, I took them out to Delaveaga Park to find what I thought would be easy ones!

Unfortunately, I was solo with Chloe strapped to my chest and our first couple attempts were aborted because Cameron needed to pee (and I left her little potty at the car!). There was also a fair amount of poison oak so I wasn’t all that eager to take my eyes off of the kids for fear that they’d brush up against it and we’d all be in trouble!

The kids were total troopers. We didn’t find the first one (but, I consider discovering the Branciforte Trail a big bonus!) or the second one near the creek. The father of a family playing on the playground helped look for the second one, but he had no better luck than me!

Luckily, I don’t think the kids are discouraged. They have their trade-able stuff all ready to go, kept in the dreamboxes they made at the library last week!

we found it!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

On our way home from Big Basin, we stopped by Highlands Park for a picnic lunch. We intended to go to Loch Lomond, but luckily, I had no idea where I was going and we ended up at Highlands instead!

I also started getting interested in taking the kids geocaching…just signed up for an account on geocaching.com and downloaded an app to locate and navigate to various caches. One happened to be near our picnic spot, so we set about looking for it…and after some hunting around a rather large Sequoia, we found it!

It was very exciting! There was a tiny plastic shark, a silly band and a shiny keychain in the canister. The kids managed to scrounge up some toys to trade for the ones we found–a finger flashlight and one of those capsules that turn into a sponge animal when soaked in water. It was fun finding the stuff and it was a great way to end our camping adventure!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

As part of our Father’s Day celebration this year, we went on a camping trip to Big Basin–we didn’t want to go tooooo far just in case things didn’t pan out with little Chloe. We camped in Blooms Creek again and got a campsite adjacent to HAT’s family (Heather’s mom and pop came as well!!!).

The first night of camping was Father’s Day, so Heather and I did the “cooking” while Tom and Assaf drank Simple Times beer!

It was only a 2-nighter, so we only managed to squeeze in one long hike and a couple of meals. The kids did fantastic! They hiked alllll day on Monday, essentially doing just as much hiking/walking as the grown-ups! And they just loved it. They were actually proactively asking to go on hikes!

This year, we also signed up for the Capture California game so on our first day of camp, having rushed out of the house before printing out a pre-designed flag, Dylan and I made our own flag. We’ve been having fun taking it exploring.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some photo highlights of Chloe’s first camping trip!

Dylan made this card for teacher Juan and he made a Hama bead heart that he glued to the front as well! I thought this was so sweet–he loves trains and he knows Teacher Juan likes surfing, so he drew Juan surfing towards his train.

He really misses Juan. Even today, he saw a play VW bus with a surfboard on top and he wanted to buy it as a present for him!!
