Over Memorial Day weekend, it was so beautiful outside, we decided to take the kids to Cowell to get a little sunshine, running and redwoods in.

On our way in, we happened to run into Jamilah and Brian (good friends we met through H. and A.)! They were taking a break from a Civil War re-enactment event next door at Roaring Camp and were just resting their dogs on a park bench just inside the loop trail!

The kids came equipped with finger flashlights which they used to light up the inside of the Fremont tree (the tree where John Fremont camped in during a storm). We settled in this area as our lunch spot. While the kids went from Fort 1 to Fort 2 (Fremont tree and neighboring tree, respectively), we set out the sandwiches, cherries and berries….

Cameron was tired even before we set out on our walk and she had to go back to the car with Tom at first. But, she decided it would be more fun to chillax with the rest of us than just sit in the car with daddy, so she bucked up and rejoined us!

After the park, we went to H. and A’s house where they set up the inflatable pool for some nice, splashy fun.

Cameron had sacked out on the way home from the park, so she missed the swim part, but when she arrived with Tom, it was time to use the pool water to water the plants and she was alllll over helping with that!

It’s so hard being the third child. With Dylan, it seemed we knew exactly how many days old he was; poor Chloe, I can’t even remember what week she’s on! Nevertheless, here she is at approximately 3 months and some. Today, we were at a party for a long-time mommy friend (we first met when our boys were babies, but never really hung out until now) whose daughter just turned 1! They had an incredible backyard and it turns out they built all three structures on their property and the awesome tree house with crow’s nest all on their own (the dad’s a builder). It was so cool.

dylan and trains
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Dylan loved the tree house, but of course, he focused on building some train tracks!

Both kids also drew sweet bday wishes pictures for Maizy. Dylan asked what Maizy likes (I told him music) and then he asked what we got for her (a toy boat for the bath), so his picture was of a boat and he’d written “To Maizy Love, Dylan). Cameron drew a monkey for Maizy!

The kids were having a great time, but unfortunately, we had to leave this party early, too! The kids had another swim lesson today. Again, Dylan did stellar and we are still seeing lots of resistance from Cameron though she again went out with the floatie bar.

Dylan was having so much fun swimming, he wanted to stay in the hot tub and “practice” for a bit more after class! So proud of our little guy.

Before we left, we took a group photo of the kids. Of course, nobody was serious!!! I think Finley had such a great time being with all of his buddies…and Dylan, as always, loved hanging out with Nate and Finley!

But, as I mentioned, we had to leave early! We went in with Heather and Assaf for babysitting so we could go to an evening housewarming party for a mutual friend, but we decided we’d attempt a movie (The Avengers) beforehand. In order to squeeze in the movie before the adults-only party (except I did drag Chloe along with us!), we had to catch a matinee.

The kids did great with the babysitters–they had a good dinner and we heard they generally got along…even Cameron was cooperative and comfortable with the girls! Us grown-ups decided we needed to do this on a more regular basis. I hope we can stick to it!!

Last week (on Dylan’s actual bday), we started up the swim lessons. This was Cameron’s first session ever…and she was all hip to the idea until her lesson actually started! Dylan, on the other hand, is finally exhibiting some enthusiasm for learning…!

dylan’s bday circle

bday circle at school
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

I know…Dylan’s bday was last week, but I had to post about the super sweet bday circle he had at school as well. There are some things about teacher Juan that need improvement (e.g., he’s not so good at getting notices out in a timely manner), but he is an absolutely wonderful teacher in many respects–the emphasis on art, music, and on peace, meditation, and being a good friend…these far outweigh the logistical “issues”. The bday circle was just another thing Juan does superbly well.

bday candle
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We made cookie ‘n’ cream cupcakes for the bday circle, but at Dylan’s request, we left the candles at home. He informed us that Juan had his own special bday candle (pictured here!). There is also a bell that Dylan rang with a stone, 1 for each year he’s been around. After each clang, we noted something memorable about that year (year 1: his first word was “coffee”; year 2: he developed an interest in trains; year 3: he became a big bro; year 4: he did his first Superkids Triathlon; year 5: he started school (!)).

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

It’s hard to see in the picture, but there’s also a crystal ball. After the bell and the candle, they passed the crystal ball around and everyone got to say their bday wish to Dylan. This was the sweetest part of the whole ritual! Juan started by saying Dylan is so honest and he’s such a good friend and he loves him. After that, each kid took a turn. There were a whole lot of I love you’s and you’re a good friend and “I love you in so many ways” and “I wish you were my best friend”! It was so cute. Dylan was the last to say something: “If you see me in first grade, I hope you’ll say hi” (I couldn’t help but giggle).

At the end of it all, there were cupcakes! I’m not sure if Logan was hugging Dylan because they’re great buddies, or if he was just really excited about cupcakes! Norry (right behind Dylan) is one of Dylan’s best kindergarten buddies, though….

We were only able to eke out 23 cupcakes from our batch, but luckily, one kid was absent that day, so Cameron lucked out and got one, too! Overall, a super sweet celebration. I will miss this when he goes into first grade next year!

It’s hard to believe that our li’l guy is already 6. He is still one of the most sensitive kids I’ve seen–he’s so compassionate and so emotionally aware. Even our friends remark on his emotional intelligence. And, although conflicts with Cameron are getting a bit rougher, overall, he’s still as gentle as ever.

Annnd, he still loves trains! So, we had another celebration at Oak Meadow Park in Los Gatos (our second time there, our third time with the train theme!).

We invited our close family friends as well as Dylan’s best buddies. At first, we were worried that his best buddies (aside from Heather and Assaf’s girls) wouldn’t make it, especially since the party was in Los Gatos rather than Santa Cruz, but as it turned out, everybody came! And it was a grand fiesta!

This year, I made reservations too late to get the picnic area for the entire day, but we did bring the kids’ bikes and Dylan rode to the Vasona side of the park with Cameron amiably jogging behind after the party had ended! We saw the train and the kids waved.

Chloe wakes up!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Miraculously, Chloe slept through the entire party!! She was asleep for about 5-6 hours!! I was suffering from a minor (and improving) case of mastitis that morning, so I was a bit worried and uncomfy with skipping the nursing, but it was much easier to manage the party with her asleep!

She finally woke up during the bike ride, so we all paused to listen to the creek while she ate.

T.and K. did a sleep over at our house on Friday night(!) and the very next day, after Assaf swung by with a bunch of super yummy farmer’s market strawberries, we hauled scooters, a skateboard, and balls down to the school to burn off some good kid energy! (This is one of Cameron’s new headbands, by the way. And the first time she wore it, Tom said to her: “you look much better than Hillary Clinton!!” Why, I do believe he’s right!)

Anyway, the sleepover was a great success and we’re happy we could finally reciprocate–Dylan has done so many sleepovers at their house, including at least 3 in the past 4 or 5 weeks!

And, here are a few more pictures from the playground.

Ok. One other note. I never, and I mean never did I ever imagine that I would have so much pink in my life. It’s not a color I’ve really appreciated in the past and I certainly didn’t plan on dressing my girls in pink, but of course, Dylan’s favorite color is pink and, along with purple, it’s Cameron’s, too. So here we are…in amidst a whole lot of pink, including a soccer ball. I’ve now embraced pink, and I even have my own pink gardening gloves! Kids will change ya…!
