Lake Tahoe!

We made reservations for a rental in Tahoe eons ago for the week that Dylan and Taliana were on winter break from school. Given previous years, we knew snow wasn’t a guarantee in January, but we crossed our fingers for it anyway.

As it turned out, the weather was perfectly balmy and beautiful and there was hardly any snow to be seen anywhere(!), but that didn’t deter us all from having a good time!

The big highlight for the kids was sledding on a small hill covered with manmade crusty snow (you could even see patches of the ground at the bottom!). The kids also played with the snow in a teeny snowbank along the side. They had so much fun the first day of sledding, we took them back the next day for a couple of hours more….

This was the first time Cameron rode on a sled! Last year, while everyone else sledded, I holed up in the car and nursed her….

She just loved it! And, unlike Dylan the first time he encountered snow play, she was gung-ho about getting her hands into it and playing. She didn’t mind wearing a hat, snowsuit, boots, or mittens (unlike Dylan who disliked ALL of that bulky wear…).

As usual, we had to battle with Dylan to persuade him he’d have fun–he didn’t like his snowsuit, his boots, his jacket, or his gloves!

Luckily, the snow was so crusty, he didn’t really need boots and we brought an extra pair of pants so he could skip the snowsuit and change clothes if he got too wet (he didn’t).

After much pouting and dragging of feet, I decided to quietly just walk the grumpy boy up the hill with me after having asked if Heather would be willing to sled down with him. He wanted me to go with him, but when I explained to him that I couldn’t because of the baby, he went on with Heather…and clearly had a great time!

In the end, the lack of snow was maybe a positive! It was Cameron and K’s first time really playing with snow and it wasn’t tooooo cold or wet (some of the things that kind of put Dylan off in the past). Still, we are hoping for more snow next time…!

I’m back to trying to do Project 365 (a photo a day), so yesterday’s shot (Day 2) was of Dylan (with his new hair cut) and Cameron doing their doubling-up thing on one of the Plasma cars they got from Santa.

Dylan buckles Cameron in by strapping her to him with a bungee cord around their waists! The bungee also has our bicycling reflective caution triangle threaded through it, so it hangs off Cameron’s back as they ride along….It’s really pretty cute. Dylan is definitely an innovator!

New Year’s Eve

We made it home in time to hook up with Heather and her family for our annual NYE celebration. This year, her bro David stayed in town for the festivities and for this reason, I am especially bummed that I fell asleep with the kids and missed pretty much the entirety of the drinking and gambling grown-up fun–we don’t get to see him very often any more, so it’s a shame I missed out on the chance to hang out!

Baby’s expected bday is 3/1, though, and David’s bday is 3/2, so maybe he’ll be back in town to celebrate with his family and he can meet the new little one, too.

Anyway, as you can see, the girls suited up for a long night at our place! All of the kids have been partying non-stop since our Chanukah celebration on the 23rd, so it was obvious to all of us that none of them would last until midnight!

Thankfully, Tom was well enough to enjoy himself with the “extended fam”, too, and I ended up waking up at 11:58…just in time to ring in the new year with everyone!

our trip to LA

We intended to head to LA the day after Christmas, but after getting home so late on Christmas night, Tom and I realized it would be insane to try to pack and be ready and energized for such a long trip the next night. We ended up leaving on Tuesday morning and braving the road trip with kids wide awake!

Dylan got pretty bored–even armed with Tag pen and books, Leapster, and an mp3 player loaded up with music, and some DVDs. He really only wanted to watch one Leap Frog DVD before he got tired and then it was all “are we there yet” from there!

He decided he liked being asleep and waking up and “magically” being in LA (we decided we agreed…Tom, especially, was getting worn out by the complaints!)!

Miraculously, he stayed awake the entire trip!

Cameron had an easier time entertaining herself with her Tag pen and Leapster, but she at least sacked out for a couple of hours en route.

I brought my camera, but an incredible series of brain lapses had me forgetting to take it out…! Still, we had a great visit with Grandma Sharon (we’re all so happy she’s doing much better).

Dylan has such fond memories of being in LA. He is always so excited to see her! He spent a lot of time hanging out reading and playing games with her on the bed!

Another highlight of the trip was visiting Griffith Park for the first time!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

I’m really bummed I didn’t get pictures the whole time we were there! The kids also really, really enjoyed seeing Eli and Rocky and playing with them.

It didn’t take long for Cameron to come out of her shell with the kids. In no time at all, she and Rocky were holding hands and she would come back to the dinner table to report that they were all hiding from Eli.

We ended up having to stay in LA an extra night because Tom got some tummy bug — poor Dylan wanted to see his cousins some more before we left! But, as always, we’ll have the next visit to look forward to…..

The ride back home from Candice’s house was extremely short, but it was so late, the kids pretty much sacked out on the way home!

It was a good thing, too….After putting the kids into bed, Tom and I got to Christmas morning prep–setting out a plate of cookies for Santa, wrapping our presents for the kids, and prepping the food for Christmas brunch and dinner with my side of the family.

Tom was heroic. We got a heads-up that there would be cinnamon rolls for brunch, so Tom prepped vegan cinnamon rolls as well as our regular tofu scramble and mashed potatoes while I prepped the brussels sprouts.

Tom and I only got to bed around 2 or 3 in the morning, but it was definitely worth all of the prep and exhaustion…the kids were so excited about the holidays and, throughout, they’ve enjoyed every aspect of preparation and celebration. They were definitely looking forward to Christmas Day….
