Today we caught the Cirque Polynesian circus act at the Boardwalk and afterwards, indulged the kids in a few rides. Cameron was clearly still tired from last night’s heavy partying (we spent the morning swimming and the rest of the day at Heather and Assaf’s–got there in the early afternoon and Tom and the kids stayed while I had a rare dinner-out-without-the-fam with a couple of good friends of mine way back from my AOL days).

Dylan initially did not want to see the Circus, but as soon as we saw the performers ready to get up on stage, all dressed up in their costumes, he gained a ton of new enthusiasm! Plus, we met Taliana and P. there as well, so he was pretty happy to see his buddies.

Dylan is now tall enough to ride so many more of the rides there, but he is still super reluctant to go…even when Taliana offered to ‘chaperone’ him (she is clearly super proud to be big enough to qualify for this role!). Luckily, his single-minded focus on the cave train and downright pill-y attitude towards other rides didn’t deter the girls from enjoying themselves (here they are on a sickening spinny ride called The Starfish).

Cameron finally succumbed to sleep after we got off Ghostblasters, but we also left the park shortly after that and, for some reason, her big eyes just popped open again in the parking lot! Total nap time: 15 minutes??

But, improvements to her castle in the backyard had to be made–and prior to that, she was just as amped up as the other kids to go ride bikes across the street.

Dylan, incidentally, is just getting better and better at biking. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised! We’re definitely pleased! He’s even beginning to improve on using those coaster brakes.

This time, we started the fire pit early enough to squeeze in some post bbq s’mores making…And, afterwards, the kids went up on their “stage” to perform their circus acts. It was pretty darn cute–lots of attempted gymnastic poses, twists and twirls and attempted cartwheels, ending in a nice bow!

After the girls (Taliana and P.) went home, we prepped for bedtime…and Dylan came up with his own little routine. Video soon….

Still, we did enjoy some outdoor time in the now complete (except for side gates) backyard! While the kids played, the grown-ups managed to finish 2 whole games of a game called 7 Wonders.

I can’t remember what else we did that weekend!! The previous weekend, though, while I was at a baby shower, Tom took the kids to Ellie’s bday party at a place called The Jungle. Apparently, Cameron loved it, but poor Dylan lost his enthusiasm after losing sight of Tom for a little too long than was comfy!

Anyway, despite the haziness of the past couple of weeks, one thing always remains crystal clear: Monday’s are brutal!

San Luis Obispo

"hello???"
“hello???”
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Just got back from another fantastic (but brief) getaway with the kids. This time, Tom’s work took us to San Luis Obispo. We wondered why our car wasn’t loaded down like it usually is, until we realized, whoops, forgot the camera AND the stroller!

So, unfortunately, the first order of biz was to rectify those probs!

First day was consequently rough. We got in at around 1am on Thursday and although kids slept en route, they didn’t fall asleep until past 10pm, they were so excited!

Then, Cameron awoke way too early! Dylan woke up excited, so there was no “gettin’ back to sleep” after that.

Brekky started out well enough, but we had about 90 minutes dead time before we could head out to get a stroller and point and shoot and, during that time, Cameron started to get sleepy and cranky again!

We’d planned to head to the Children’s Museum, but everyone protested. I was crestfallen…but also too tired to argue with the kids, so we just headed back to the hotel and suited up for swimming.

Afterwards, Cameron did not nap as hoped for, despite the fact that both kids were super active in the pool! Dylan was all amped up about playing “office” in the room and Cameron was too excited to sleep as well!

I was a bit bummed to have spent such a lovely day in the room, but all was not lost. It’s summer and the sun doesn’t go down right away!! So, after Tom finished up his work meeting, we headed out for the Thursday evening Farmer’s Market!

On our way there, we found an amazing chocolate shop, Sweet Earth Chocolates, which not only had a huge selection of vegan chocolates (peppermint patties, truffles, peanut butter cups, and caramels included!), but uber-yummy vegan shakes as well!

We needed no convincing to get us some yums.

The Farmer’s Market itself was pretty crowded, but still a good time. We got balloon bracelets and roasted corn for the kids and enjoyed music by at least 3 different bands!

The next day, Cameron slept in (hooray!), so our day got off to a more reasonable start and we did finally make it to the museum.

The museum was just awesomeness–I guess that’s what happens when you’re near a University renowned for its design and architecture programs!!

Overall, the kids were just stellar! At breakfast time, I was able to set ’em up at a table and they obediently stay put while I went to get food. When Cameron got antsy and tried to run after me during clean-up time, Dylan (who is just an amazing big brother!!), would try to herd her back in!

Dylan truly is amazing. He is so loving and sweet and thoughtful. A mother couldn’t ask for a nicer kid! He is so often so willing to help with Cameron…he tries to cheer her up when she’s sad, he helps me when I’ve got no hands left…he’s a great listener. And he’s just so much fun! He loves to laugh and joke and take you with him on all his journeys of imagination (right now, a common theme is that he and I are going to work together when he grows up…and we’ll work in a park…and have a train with FIVE cabooses)!

Then there’s Cameron. Hew new favorite phrase (thanks to Dylan) is, “mommy, I gotta tell you something. Else.”! She definitely has her challenging terrible-twos moments, but when she just spontaneously gives you hugs and says, “I just love you” your heart just melts!

We celebrated Assaf’s bday a couple of weekends ago and I finally remembered my camera! Cameron was initially surprised to find that she wasn’t the “baby” at the house that day–Assaf’s year-old nephew Nico was there…stealing her limelight, no less!

At first, Cameron seemed a little put out, but after just a few minutes, she was sharing and inviting him to play like you wouldn’t believe! We were all very impressed (and pleased!).

She would hand Nico things saying, “here you go” and ask him, “do you want to play [blah blah blah]?” It was all incredibly sweet. Sometimes, she’ll surprise you like that (other times, if you’re not doing just what she wants, she’ll whack you in the head and then cry like she’s the victim!).

While we were at Urgent Care attending to Dylan’s biking accident, we missed a phone call from Yuchen and Ellie who were spending a day at the beach. Luckily, they pretty much spent the entire day in town and we managed to hook up with them for dinner.

Undeterred by his boo boo’s, Dylan went and picked a “collection of flowers” for Ellie–rosemary, jasmine (which he proclaimed he “just loved” the smell of), and a sprig of peppermint–all found just outside the doors of the restaurant.

Ellie is very shy, even though the kids have known each other since birth (since Mark, Yuchen and Tom have all known each other since their grad school days at U. of Chicago) and we’ve done overnight family trips with them, etc. so I was especially pleased to see Dylan come out of his own shell and try to engage her in conversation. Plus, it was just super sweet of him to think to pluck flowers for her! He even sat opposite the table from me because he wanted to sit next to her! Believe me, this is pretty unusual; he usually wants to camp out right next to me (if not on my lap!).

Before the food even arrived, the kids were giggling and chatting and giving each other turns playing games on Yuchen’s iPad and on my Droid.

Admittedly, it would have been nicer if they didn’t bond over games…but it was a pretty good icebreaker for sweet little Ellie! Before saying good night, they did a couple of good rounds of chase outside the restaurant.

After…he fell on a downhill and got owies, but he’s such an amazing fella. Despite a scuffed up forehead and painful fat lip (and torn frenulum), he kept his chin up and played merrily upstairs with me. When I fell asleep on the bed, I awoke (when Tom brought Cameron up from her nap) to find he’d covered me with his favorite red blanket.

Why can’t we take the falls for them? I feel so sad that he got hurt (but, I s’pose part of me is very glad I didn’t actually see it happen). I wish I could rewind the moment. I need a visit to the Bunny Planet. And, yes, now I’m looking for a good full-face helmet that will fit him properly.

the start of our long weekend

enjoying our sunny day
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Despite the fact that the kidlets awoke us early this morning, our Saturday got off to a late-ish start. We’re all so excited about our backyard progress (the landscapers dropped off the plants this past Friday), I wanted to look around for a swing or something that would safely fit in the play area. I finally gave up, so after kids finished pancake brekkies, we headed out for the farmer’s market to stock up on this week’s stone fruit–everyone in the household looks forward to summertime peaches and nectarines!

Since weather was supposed to be warm, we then headed to the store to pick up an inflatable pool.

Cameron fell asleep on the way home, but Dylan was so excited, he couldn’t wait for her to wake up, so I inflated it for him and brought some fresh cherries, olallieberries, and hazelnut butter and pomegranate jam sandwiches out for lunch.

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

The landscapers have made tons of progress, but they are actually behind schedule! While Dylan snacked, I snapped a photo of the current progress from the end of the play area (among other things, they added gravel to the play area, installed some light fixtures, netted the area by the oak trees, and cleaned up the flagstones on the paths).

Incidentally, that pool was no picnic to set up! It has 3 valves for the little slide alone, but 3 more to hold up the arch for the “waterfall” along with 3 other main valves. Since we have a giant pile of dirt in our yard, space to inflate it was definitely tight…the thing is much bigger than expected and I’m super happy we have an electric pump! But, the kids think the pool is da bomb, so I guess it’s worth all the set-up (and take-down) work.

she’s in!

But after eating some fruit and a sandwich, she changed her mind!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned that one of Cameron’s favorite stories to tell involves her “jumping in the pool.” One day, about a couple of months ago, she told Lola over and over again that she “jumped in the pool” and “got all wet.” We were all puzzled since she hasn’t tried swimming yet! Then, one day when I was changing her diaper, she said it again: “I jumped in the pool”! And, it dawned on me that she had picked up on Tom exclaiming, during diaper changes, that her diaper was so wet, it was like she jumped in the pool! So today, I told her she could jump into a real pool. I’m glad she finally tried it.

dylan’s camping pics

Well, at long last, we got Dylan’s roll of film developed! There were plenty of pictures of headless people, the inside of my car and various other mundane campsite items (tree stumps, the inside of our firepit, a backpack, etc), so I only scanned a few. Incidentally, Dylan was gracious enough to share his little disposable camera, so not all photos are his! Enjoy!

looking for bugs
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

In my line of work, a bug hunt means something entirely different, but for the kidlets, it just means looking in plant areas for ladybugs, sow bugs, or what-have-you!

I got to spend some extra weekday time with the kids this week and, today, we headed to the library for a special music/storytelling performance (yesterday, we went to gymnastics where Dylan practiced monkey bars in earnest and where both kids had a blast jumping on the trampoline and into the foam pit)! Before today’s “show” started, though, we had about 15-20 minutes to look for bugs and climb on the play structure.

These past two days have been so awesome! I miss being able to do all of these activities with them on a more regular basis like we used to do when Dylan was wee.

Unfortunately, I did have a bunch of other things to attend to during the day, too, so they spent their PMs in daycare/preschool. Dylan had a blast drawing with shaving cream and playing with all of his buddies. Cameron had a much tougher time at drop-off, though. I should probably try explaining the schedule to her a bit better next time so she knows what to expect….
