rock ‘n’ roll!

Last weekend, Tom and Assaf rocked the SJ half-marathon. Since they carpooled, I let the kids sleep in a bit before hustling them out the door to the Light Rail Station. Both kids were so excited about riding the train that neither of them gave me any trouble getting ready at all!

Also, quite luckily, Auntie Christina wanted to see the kids, so she met us at the Light Rail station…and thank goodness for that. I had the stroller with me and, after sitting in it on the platform for a whopping 2 minutes or something, Cameron wanted out. So, by the time the train got there, I was out of hands for both kids and the stroller!

We got there in plenty of time to meet the guys at the finish line, and after grabbing a bite to eat at P.F. Chang’s, we headed to Lola’s house for a brief visit.

She hasn’t seen Dylan since kindergarten started, so she was super stoked to see him again (and vice versa!). He didn’t want to leave!!!

Oh! Also, this past weekend, Jeff’s niece, Lauren, celebrated her 16th birthday which meant that Jason and Tyler came into town! They arrived a little early and all of the kids (Taliana and P. included) went biking before we joined Cindy and the boys for the party at Bruce and Jennifer’s house.

Here are some pictures…

spooning good singing gum

Dylan has become one of those few kindergartners who learn “Ring of Fire” in school. He’s been pulling out his ukelele every night lately, and tonight, after he put it down, he started singing, “the taste. of love is sweeeet. and it makessss a fiery ring…i fell in-to a burning ring of fire. i went down down down and the flames went higher. and it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire. the ring of fire”! It was adorable! Clearly, teacher Juan has made an impression on our li’l guy!

While Dylan’s been learning who knows what else beyond “Ring of Fire,” Cameron is making up new lyrics to her old tunes: while picking up veggies at the store the other day, she started singing, “cauli cauli flower” to the tune of “I have the Power” (check at about second 48…potty, potty power!).

Sometimes I wish I had a video camera embedded in my eye just so I can capture such spontaneous moments. They’re so precious!!!

and now the good stuff (pics!)

The last couple of weeks have been fun as well. Other preschool buddies were also adjusting to their new schools and they were sorely missing one another. So much so, we set up a dinner and play date with Nate and Finley’s families for the kids to just unloose and for us parents to decompress–pizza and wine for us and pizza and lemonade for them! The boys had such a fantastic time, running around, clearly soooo happy to see and play with one another. They got back into their play-grooves pretty much immediately.

Back at the preschool, they were being missed by younger buddies still there–Tanner kept asking why Dylan wasn’t back and then asked us what his favorite color is and proceeded to draw a picture for him (he also drew pictures for Nate and Finley). I made a point of picking Dylan up from CKC early the next day so that he could see Tanner when we picked up Cameron. They boys were thrilled. They hugged then immediately started running around the playground while I gathered up Cameron and her things.

We also went to the Watsonville air show for the first time ever…with Julie and Kaden and Julie’s buddy Marielle.

a wordy post about school

We’ve been busy these past couple of weeks since school started. Dylan is still adjusting, but now that he’s met a sweet friend (Marlon, Jr.), it seems like it is getting better.

To be honest, we thought the kinder transition would be a lot smoother–he’s been in daycare since he was 11 months and he’s been so used to socializing and being with a group of friends. At pre-school, he got along easily with everyone and charmed every teacher he had with his generally good behavior.

So, it was hard to see him suddenly be so shy (and without anyone even feeding those words to him, he described himself as “too shy”) and utterly overwhelmed by the sheer number of kids around him. He didn’t have fun at recess because there were too many kids and he thought the same thing of eating in the cafeteria!

So, while Dylan has been adjusting to being around hundreds more kids (literally), I was adjusting to not exactly knowing how he was doing–in preschool, we could always just ask the teacher (and we did, pretty much everyday), how did the kids do today? And, we got a general report of disposition and participation. Now that we only saw his teacher at the beginning of the day, we were pretty much in the dark (excepting for Dylan’s own report) on how he did after drop-off….

But, I have to say, I am so impressed by his teacher…who actually noticed Dylan’s sadness, and came up to us on the third day (or 4th?) and let me know that Dylan sometimes gets “woozy” during the day and so does Marlon, Jr. (who happened to come up just then looking for Dylan) and then turned to Dylan and told him that if he ever got sad, he could always look for Marlon, Jr. (who he also told me Dylan had been been playing and eating lunch with) or himself.

Dylan’s own reports of his day had been pretty mixed. Some days, he comes back with “gooood” and other days, it’s “bad. Too Many kids.” In general, he’s liked the after-school program better because there aren’t as many kids…! But this week, everyday was “good” and he actually started riding the bus home with Taliana!

We owe oodles of thanks to Heather and Taliana who were so patient in encouraging him to try (so he could leave the after-school program early). They took the time to introduce him to the bus driver and Taliana repeatedly checked in on him at CKC (the after-school program) to see if he wanted to go with her (she is set up to sign him out!). She didn’t give up and never took his “no” personally during that whole first full week of school when he was still too intimidated by the prospect….The first few days, he was too worried about being pushed by other kids in the bus line (our boy seriously does not have an aggressive bone in his body!), despite Taliana’s reassurances that she would protect him and despite the reassurance of the bus driver that she’d save him a seat right behind her….And, there was another sweet gal, Violet, from Taliana’s neighborhood who remembered Dylan and joined Taliana in her pledge to protect Dylan from pushers! Finally, on Monday, he decided to try–Taliana and Violet held his hand, the bus driver reserved the front seat for him, and Heather followed the bus in her own car!! After that day, he’s been all good just riding with the girls and he’s been loving the after-school time with Taliana. One day, Violet stayed to play, and another day, Melia, a very shy girl in Dylan’s class (and Taliana’s next door neighbor) also came to play (which was great because Melia and Dylan got to know each other better).

I have to say, I’m so happy Marlon Jr. has taken to Dylan. There are a couple of boys who are pretty aggressive and rough, but Marlon is not one of them (in fact, we’ve met a couple of Taliana’s neighbors who have daughters in Dylan’s class–including Melia–and both girls have remarked that the boys are ‘mean’, except for Marlon Jr. and Dylan!! Neither of these girls knows one another well, so their reports were independent of one another!)! He looks for Dylan every morning. It’s super sweet. I hope it’s the beginning of a lasting friendship!

Incidentally, we love Juan’s curriculum–so much song and movement and so much creativity. Dylan has already made a beautiful wooden picture frame and a name plate spelling his name with pebbles and sticks (one for home and one for school). Dylan comes home singing new songs about counting and the alphabet. There isn’t a lot of written work, but I can’t imagine a better way for Dylan to be learning (and, it seems, teacher Juan and his ultra-cool classroom are legendary…so many parents we’ve talked to have heard about him and everything is positive…the kids learn).

Overall, I’d say this transition has been more difficult than we’d anticipated, but we’re happy that his teacher is so warm and caring and nurturing and that he’s beginning to form a community with the kinder and more supportive kids.

This was a pretty whirlwind week for Dylan. He finished his last day of preschool on the same day we went to the Kinder Open House, started school the next day, and started his new after-school program the next day after that! It’s been an unusual week with lots of transitions.

But the first day of school was pretty exciting. He got up early, eager to get to school on time. For our little lollygagger, this is pretty huge!

During the Kinder Open House, each child got a checklist of things they could do that day: find your cubby; find the bathroom, meet your teacher; take a picture; write your name; color the picture of the school mascot….Dylan loves his little checklist. It’s in that folder he’s holding!!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

After Dylan’s teacher rang the bell to line up (a nice brass bell from India!), Cameron and Dylan hugged goodbye. And what’s with our dear son’s expression? I’m not sure! He was definitely excited, but we could tell he was also a little anxious…this was so many more kids than he’s used to at preschool and just about all of them are still strangers….Anyway, while Tom drove Cameron to daycare, I stayed with Dylan in the classroom and listened to his teacher sing a few songs on the guitar and lay out a few “cool rules”. I can tell he’ll be a great teacher…!

DSC_2840.jpg
clump in the front
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We are so glad Dylan got this teacher. His room is clearly unconventional: no visible computers for the kids in the room; a loft in a reading corner, lit by a nice lamp (actually, the entire room is lit by lamps only!); there are lots of sticks, rocks and tree stumps (some tree stumps are used as chairs) and he plays his guitar at circle time.

The first day was a short day and, luckily, this coincided with my work-from-home day, so I was able to pick Dylan up from school right away. I decided, to ease the transition to the after-school program, we’d visit it (which we did), meet the teachers, check out the space, and then he could stay home with me.

DSC_2842.jpg
first day students
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Heather was teaching that afternoon, so I was supposed to pick Taliana up! Sadly, I thought she got out at 2pm, so I told Dylan we’d have to go back to the school for her, but bright girl that she is, after discovering we’d left Dylan’s classroom, she came right on over all by herself (I’m glad we’re close by!!)! The kids had a blast exchanging first day of school stories, yapping about the principal’s ‘speech’ (Taliana saw Dylan at the assembly, but Dylan did not see her), how much they liked their teachers, what their classrooms were like and what school supplies Taliana got! It was all very sweet!

So, the first day was a big success, for sure. As was the second. Dylan still doesn’t really know his classmates, so even though he played with a few kids, he still doesn’t know their names and I can tell he’s a little stressed and, like me, he’s shy! I can totally relate. Tom and I are encouraging him to introduce himself and ask kids what their names are and also reassuring him that he’ll know the kids pretty soon…just like in pre-school.

I think it definitely helps that Taliana is there. It’s sweet to see them wave hi to each other when they see each other at the school! Heather has also picked Dylan up early from the after-school program on Thursday and Friday (so rather than wait there until 5:30pm, he’s been getting out at 2:30pm!) and watching him after school. I’m sure this is also helping with the transition!

Next week, we’ll have a few more firsts…he’ll try riding the bus home with Taliana so he can occasionally go home to play with her rather than camp out at school all afternoon. We love us our Auntie Heather! It pains me to think about the days he’ll be at school longer than I’ll be at work….

So Day Three, was a bit rough. He still is clearly overwhelmed by the crowds–he dutifully files into the room to place his lunch box in his cubby, but it’s not long before it’s thronged with parents and kids and he starts getting nudged here and there. He’s my sensitive li’l fella and this makes him sad. This morning, it got bad enough that he actually just dropped his lunch box on the floor and came running back out towards me in tears. After we put his lunch box in his cubby together, I gave him a big hug and helped him find a seat at the art table. After a few minutes, he still hadn’t quite regained his equilibrium, but I figured I had to leave to let him to snap out of it on his own. It was tough leaving the classroom!

I’m hoping next week will be 100% positive! And, I’m heartened by the fact that he did finish the calendar project they worked on today! He painted a nice rainbow, with a sun and a picture of himself and Cameron….

As for Cameron, she misses Dylan who has been accompanying her to Lola’s house twice a week. She keeps asking, “where’s Dyl-Ann?” and mom told me she seemed a little sad on that first day without him. She loves walking to school with him, though, and it’s always sweet to see them hug goodbye….

bday fun

Taking a day off from work is always more fun than working, but my bday was awesome for more reasons than just that!

I spent a leisurely morning with the kids playing trains, building train stations out of dollhouse pieces, playing with dollhouses (where Cameron had baby doll and daddy doll singing happy birthday to the mommy doll!), and reading and drawing with them until it was time to go pick up Tom from work.

After getting Tom from the office and picking up a snack for the kids, we headed for San Francisco where we spent a couple of hours at the awesome playground at Golden Gate Park — got to the carousel in time to take the last ride of the day — and then headed for Millennium for a tasty bday dinner.

Camping Butano

We did our second camping trip of the season at nearby Butano, one of Tom’s favorite state parks. And, for good reason. The place is beautiful–there aren’t too many campsites, they’re all nestled in redwoods, and despite the relative nearness of the place, it feels like your a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

As always, the kids loved it, especially since Assaf and Tom were able to request a different site from our original assignment–our site was adjacent to a wide-open play area that the kids dubbed their “outdoor fort.” We found boards to balance on logs as make-shift teeter totters, the kids made fairy houses, balanced on logs and climbed trees and just generally ran around like maniacs! We could see them from our campsite and, since the space was relatively open, we felt fairly comfy letting them run off on their own. It was great!

We didn’t make ice cream this time around, but we did make s’mores. Cameron tended to like just eating the marshmallows or graham crackers by themselves, but not feeding her chocolate was just fine with us!

We also went to a couple of nature programs — one on banana slugs (we saw tons of banana slugs and Cameron was remarkably good at spotting them!!) and the other on birds (featuring the marbled murrelet). For their participation, the kids got Little Ranger books with a stamp for each activity in which they participated. And, despite Dylan’s initial reluctance to participate in both programs, he ended up loving them and is still playing Ranger/Little Ranger back at home. He is dragging his Little Ranger book around with him and reading us stories around a ‘campfire’.

The kids had so much fun, they had a tough time with the idea of leaving, but the good thing is that they’re all looking forward to the next camping trip next year!!

Anyway, here are some photo highlights of the fun….

Cameron loved declaring that she saw “another banana slug. over there. by the ground.” The big ones were mommy and daddy slugs and the little ones were mei mei and Dylan slugs (incidentally, she no longer calls Dylan “dih dih”…now it’s Dyl-Ann).

Cameron turns 2

It’s hard to believe Cameron is already two! When I see pictures of her as a baby, I’m still stunned at how quickly time went by…it seems like it went more quickly with her than it did with Dylan.

To celebrate, I took the day off from work. I was planning on taking Dylan to daycare for half a day while I spent the morning alone with Cameron, but Cindy called and asked if she could take Dylan with her and, of course, Dylan couldn’t pass up an opportunity to hang out with his cousins, so Cameron had Tom and I all to herself.

There was no competition for the fire trucks on this ride (only the fire trucks have bells, the police cars don’t have any), so every single time she rode, she got to ding ding ding.

She had a blast and didn’t want to leave (the only downside to being there for only 90 minutes, I guess!). But, afterwards, we headed back to Lola’s house for a celebratory dinner for both Cameron and Tyler with the family.

Celebrating didn’t end there, though! We had a joint bday celebration with Kaden as well. Pictures coming!

Last Friday, Dylan’s preschool hosted a sweet little graduation celebration and lunch at a nearby park! Dylan chose to wear his Hawaii shirt–we love this shirt on him. So glad Fred and Julie sent along a new Hawaii shirt because Dylan just loves them (he loves his new one, too!).

Dylan was sooo excited about the graduation celebration. As soon as I’d parked the car, he was already out of his car seat and hurtling towards the playground where Nate was already playing.

After letting the kids run around for a while, the teachers gathered up the kids and they did a little “parade” to their spots on the big blanket and then they recited about ten poems from memory. How sweet was that??

Dylan’s favorite poem is “May Wind”….I think he likes whispering the “summer. is. near” part!

Each child was seated in front of a giant piece of cake (and, this time, Cathy, the Director, had gotten a vegan cake for Dylan from Staff of Life!) loaded up with a bunch of candles “wishes.” Each child then went around the circle and got another candle/wish from everyone else.

Every child also got a “lei” of every other child’s hand print and wish. The teachers cut out and wrote out every child’s hand and wish. What a labor of love!

The sentiments ranged from “I want to wish them Spaghetti” and “I wish them Spider Man” to “I wish them good luck,” etc. Dylan’s wish was “I wish them love.” <3

Only Rylee will be going to the same school as Dylan so Dylan gave Nate a big hug goodbye.

And, of course, Auntie Heather wouldn’t have missed the celebration for the world. She took time out of her incredibly busy day to join the celebration.

Dylan loved the roses we got for him. I love how he finds things beautiful! He picked a spot on his desk for them and has been appreciating their beauty daily!

Over this past weekend, we also reenacted graduation a few times. We did a little procession to the living room, sat down in a circle and recited our poems!

The whole daycare path hasn’t always been a smooth one, but overall, we are so pleased with his school. This is one loving group of gals and I feel grateful for the good care they’ve provided!

Each child also got a wonderful book, Amos and Boris, which talks about two friends who help each other out and, in the end, though they may never see one another again, they will always remember each other….

Incidentally, this was a very special graduating group–these kids were among the first to have started in the infant room when the school first opened. Dylan wasn’t the first one in there (I think Nate was!!), but having started at 11 months, he was one of the early starters to have gone all the way through!

It’s hard to believe that Dylan will start kindergarten in just a few weeks! And, Cameron will transition to the preschool this month as well (they are already bringing her up into the big room to familiarize her with the space! Oy. Time.
