more weekend fun

Last Sunday was one of those busy days: we started out with a 10K (both of us performed pretty decently — sub-9 minute miles — considering our level of training), then after showering at Lola’s house (she kindly watched the kids while we ran!), we took the kids to the Children’s Discovery Museum to check out the Bob the Builder display, and then we headed to Cindy’s house for the annual Virgo kids birthday celebration (me and Rob).

Cameron was an absolute whirlwind. She was moving from this exhibit to that giving us hardly any time to catch out breath! She played with the tools, “drove” in Muck(?) the truck, and pumped water like a mad-woman.

She also went down the itty bitty slide with Dylan (and by herself!)

Dylan built a wall, pushed a wheelbarrow full of “stones” around, and also pumped water (blue balls) like a madman.

Dylan also did some “building design” by matching the shapes to those pictured in the blueprints.

And after all of that, Dylan helped decorate his cousin Rob’s cupcakes! And, of course, he played with his cousins.

Apparently, Tyler told him about vampires, too, because the next day, he told us the following:
Dylan: “if a vampire bites another vampire, that’s ok…but if a vampire bites somebody who is *not* a vampire, that could hurt…And vampires live far away. You can’t even drive to them”.

The next day, he repeated this!

In the meantime, Cameron is signing and saying “milk” (all the time, too!), she now enthusiastically greets Dylan with a “hiii, Dih dih” (and often pats him on the head or the back!) and she signs “elephant” (and makes an elephant sound).

Last weekend, Cameron “swam” around the hot tub while Dylan had his swim lesson — the previous week, we’d seen a little baby gal about the same age as Cameron whose daddy was swimming her through and, we thought, sure, why not get Cameron accustomed to swimming?

Last weekend, after Dylan’s morning swimming lesson, we took the kids to Oak Meadow Park for some more of that Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad action, some biking (Dylan on his balance bike and Cameron on the tricycle) and a little carousel ride (for Cameron).

After the rides shut down for the day, we headed to the playground and then ended a perfect Saturday day with a very delicious Ethiopian meal at Zeni’s. Cameron loved the greens and yellow split peas and injera and the lentils in the sambusas. We love that Dylan still loves those very same dishes!

autumn moon festival

Fall is officially here and to kick it off, we took our mooncakes from SF’s Eastern Bakery (yummy stuff, for sure!) and attended an Autumn Moon Festival, hosted by our Mandarin teacher.

As an aside, Dylan was a prince at school that day and he had a lovely crown painted on his sweet little forehead!

Once again, Cameron looks like such a calm and self-reflexive little being. In actuality, she tore around on the grass and the playground without stopping! I kid you not.

Well, while she chewed, she paused to survey the land, perhaps plotting her next sprint!

Taliana and Dylan made volcanoes in the sand and ate edamame, spring rolls, fruit kabobs and corn before sitting for circle time with their teacher and making lanterns!

The kids and parents took the lanterns and marched all the way around the lake! Cameron missed most of the project time as she wanted to nurse, but we caught up with the group as they were about 1/3 of the way around. It was a beautiful night and we were all miraculously spared from too many mosquito bites!

We ended the evening with a late dinner of Chinese food with our moon cakes as dessert. Although the evening went late, I think a good time was had by all…!

Cameron had her 1-year doc appointment this morning (yep, a month late…we’re on the vaccination schedule) AND her first Music Together class since she’s been alert enough to be aware of it (my first day of my weekly work-from-home-so-I-can-bond-with-baby day)! So, she got four shots today plus a test to check her iron levels. Of course, all is well and she’s continuing to trend around the 73rd and 75th percentile for weight and height.

Poor Doodle got a little freaked out by the doc’s assistant and was anxious during our whole visit there (though the doc set her a little more at ease). I never really want her to feel anxious, but I have to admit, having her burrow down into your shoulder is a pretty sweet feeling!

So, after getting poked four times (poor thing startled with the first prick and then yelped for the next three), we headed over to Music Together. She just loved it and I’m glad we could do something fun after the so un-fun vaccines!

She spent much of the session soaking it in, watching everyone in the room and listening to the teacher. She’d back her little bottom onto my lap to observe from her “safe” vantage point. When she did venture forward, she’d turn back to flash me huge smiles.

It was the best, and I am so grateful that I can take the time off from work to have this time with her.

I also have to mention her new words and signs! She’s signing “cat” (and meowing), she’s really embraced “no”, and she now very enthusiastically says “yay!!!!” Tonight at HAT’s house, she tried to say, “help.”

I can’t remember if I’ve already mentioned it, but she also signs “eat” (by pointing to her mouth with one finger) and, hurrah!, she finally started signing “more” (accompanied by a “mo?”). We also think she has developed her own version of “all done” (one hand waving side-to-side)–she does this when she’s “all done” with sitting in her booster chair and wants to relocate to a lap.

LA

Oh, my goodness. We had another incredible time visiting with family and friends in Los Angeles over Labor Day weekend. Dylan ran a great race and, I think, Tom and I did, too (all things considered). I’ve delayed writing the post because my pictures are trapped on a hard drive that just died and I haven’t had time to move them to a new one.

Anyway, we spent two days at Disneyland where Dylan had a few “firsts” (and Cameron, too): riding Astro Blasters (twice!), the horse-drawn trolley (pulled by a giant Belgian named Holly), the Mark Twain steam boat, and sittin’ in the Tiki Room (where people applauded animatronic birds on-demand).

We also were able to squeeze in a few rides on the Steam Train and the Monorail, Finding Nemo, Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and Alice in Wonderland. Not bad, considering the last time we were there, I think we only managed to ride a total of three rides!

For the most part, Cameron enjoyed herself, too. On Pirates, Astro Blasters, Mr. Toad’s, and Alice in Wonderland, she’d burrow her sweet little head into my chest and just wait for the ride to pass! On Finding Nemo, she wanted to open the window!

Yes, the weather was pretty good — for our half-marathon (we owe a billion thanks to Grandma Sharon for waking up at 4:30am to watch the kids while we ran), it stayed at about 65 and, during the second day, it didn’t break 90F! And, the park was remarkably uncrowded.

We returned to Grandma Sharon’s house after leaving Disneyland and we spent the next 2.5 days there.

Dylan just loved playing with Grandma Sharon and, even now, he says wants to move to LA (sorry kid, not gonna happen!).

During our brief stay, we also got to visit with Ty and Lynn, Jennifer and Kyler, Auntie Janice, Uncle Donald and Aunt Marilyn, Uncle Michael, Uncle Fred and Aunt Julie, Eli and Rocky, Aunt JoAnne and Grandma Sharon’s good friend, Dori.

Anyway, I will post some pics as soon as I can recover those files….

We went to the County Fair again tonight so that Dylan could spend more time at the model railroad and ride the train ride (a German import!)! More on that as soon as I’m able to transfer pictures from my camera to a reliable hard-drive!
